Just back from Sligo (and Mayo), yeah, Sligo's a great town.

Have only ever been out in Galway, Athlone, Dublin and Westport. Had good nights out in all of them.

It's a tough choice for me between Galway and Athlone for the best night out. Dublin is next best. Westport was good but nothing too amazing.

Hope to sample Cork for a night out before the end of the year.

Galway, Belfast, Dublin & Cork are all great.

    Belfast is prob my fave!

    Are you Ray D'arcy?

When it comes to fun, value (lately!) and friendliness Dublin wins hands down. It's a good size accepting city, great people, great atmosphere, big choice of venues, food, etc... Galway and Belfast and Cork are great fun to, but they can't touch Dublin.

Edit... Athlone is great fun lately too...

I dont get the Ray Darcy thing,
but no, I am not Ray Darcy.

I am right though, the locations has a small part to play in how your night out goes, the company has a far bigger part.

You what? I've been out in Dublin plenty of times and its one place in Ireland I would rather not go out in. Boring as fcuk!

Each to their own, what is exciting to me (girls, music, good diverse food, great pubs, excellent social scene, brilliant choice of venues etc...) may be boring to you.

For instance, I might find Cavan a tad boring.

Well Cavan is limited, as it isn't a city, but it has a cracking nightlife as in its completely mental for a night out. I've never even seen anything remotely as crazy in Dublin as Cavan/or any other town in Ireland, because you're simply chucked out by over zealous bouncers.

For example, you don't see people dancing on chairs or tables in Dublin, you would in Cavan/or other towns.

But City wise, Galway, Belfast, Newry and Kilkenny (I haven't been out in the others to make a judgement on them) are all miles ahead of Dublin.

Do you consider people dancing on tables crazy? Is that the craziest thing you have ever ever ever seen? You need to get out more. ;)

No, not particularly. What I mean is, in Dublin you are barely allowed to remotely enjoy yourself without a bouncer chucking you out of the place.

For example, I was out in Dublin for a birthday earlier this year, the people that were at the birthday were all from Dublin apart from myself and the gf. At the end of the night they thought it was a mad night, mental craic etc, where as we thought it was boring as hell.

Belfast on the other hand is a mad spot for a night out and it has everything that Dublin has and then some. It is the friendliest of all of the cities in this country too.

Well for starters, lots of drink. Dublin is the most expensive of the lot so you mightn't be able to get pissed on the €150 or whatever you bring out with you. Whereas the rest are cheap (Belfast and Newry in particular as they are in Northern Ireland).

... and just general chaos, jumping around the dancefloor, lifting the gf up and fireing her over to the far side of the floor. :D If out with the lads maybe just moshing, and other stuff. Maybe the odd arm wrestle for the craic. None of that is accepted in any of the places in Dublin.

Ah, I am getting a picture now... A good night out for you... Off to the local, get shltfaced, drunken "feats of strength" with your mates, bumping to people, sending them flying, ignorant to all around you, then to the nightclub, get more shltfaced, drunken "feats of strength" with your mates, bumping to people, sending them flying, ignorant to all around you, moshing with your lads, clearing the dancefloor, more "feats of strength" throwing your girlfriend around... chips and burgers, a bit of agro and then spend all Sunday suffering.

You see, you can't be expect that behaviour to be accepted in a big city where no one knows you. Fair enough, in smaller places where people might know you and know that you are actually not a trouble maker, that sort of carry on might be ok, but not in a big city nightclub where that sort of carry on will just cause trouble for people.

But, as I said before, each to their own. Your type of night for me would be mindblowingly boring, armwrestles and moshing, jumping around the nightclub, general chaos? Eh, no. ;)

Im a dub and I have to say that dublin is second to galway when it comes to night out IMO.

The atmosphere is so much better there. In dublin you always feel like you have to watch your back.

    Carlow!
I heart nights out in Carlow-no idea why!
    Galways ok, Killarneys pretty good...

Dublins a bit crap but only cuz its predictable when ya live here.. same people same places. thats not the citys fault!

Point proven then... Eh? Nothing I've said included agro. Just a bit of craic.

Still unacceptable for the big cities to be honest, throwing your GF across the floor, arm wrestles, general chaos, moshing on the dancefloor (in 20009)? That stuff causes trouble, people are not actually looking at you in wonder and awe and saying to themselves "wow, they are gas, look at them having armwrestles"... they are probably saying "Will we move on? these guys can't drink" No wonder you get thrown out of pubs in Dublin, you would get thrown out of any city pub for that carry on. I know you think it's "mad" and great craic and all, but to everyone else you are acting like a pack of kids that can't really handle your drink!

But... it does prove one thing, city entertainment simply doesn't suit you or your behaviour! So, yeah, you would be best avoiding Dublin restaurants, clubs and pubs for a few years.

Hmmm... Right so. So how is it that I was in a blues club in Belfast and a middle aged man was allowed to do cartwheels and somersaults (yes I was thinking the same thing) across the floor? We were also allowed to go mad (jumping around dancing along with everyone else) and everyone had a good time, no aggro, just fun.

It may cause trouble in Dublin where the vibe isn't as good and where people are afraid of losing face, but in other cities across the island people are more interested in enjoying themselves whether it is going for a few quiet ones or jumping about the place than how "civilised" they look.

What I'm saying is, the people that are out in Dublin need to loosen up and join in with the fun, like they do in Belfast, Galway, Kilkenny, Newry etc. Rather than standing around sipping on the two or three pints that you can afford and trying to make them last the night.

Then again, I don't expect you, as a boring Dublin person to view it any differently. Its no wonder so many Dubs have been moving up here over the past few years and that so many Dubs go elsewhere for their weekends out. They want to enjoy themselves when they're not working.

Everybody knows that craic is inversely proportional to settlement size.

I was out in a pub at a crossroads in the middle of west Clare last night with 3 ould lads. Mental. I hope they don't make me pay for breaking their bar counter.

Conversely, I was in Dublin last week and had two pints of Bud and went home.

    QED.

I found Killkenny and Cork to be great for nights out, Dublin would be a number 3

Look, a different idea of what a good night out is shouldn't force you to call me names and label all Dublin people as boring people.

Don't get me wrong, I am sure there are certain places you can go where that carry on is acceptable in Dublin. Student bars maybe, but moshing is a no go in a mainstream nightclub. People want to dance, they don't want a gang moshing, banging in to each other. The risk of hurting people or causing trouble is too much for the bouncers, no wonder you get thrown out of everywhere. Drunken feats of strength and pushing each other around isn't really acceptable in any pub, but again, there are pubs you will get away with it.

There are ways of acting accordingly in different places.

To be honest with you, if I walked in to a club and there were people arm wrestling, moshing, throwing each other around and generally acting like locked hillbillies I would walk straight back out. Your carry on wouldn't be tolerated in most cities.

But, again, I keep telling you, each to their own, Dublin simply doesn't suit you and your ilk. You can keep harping on about how you don't like Dublin, but millions disagree with you, ask any tourist on any weekend.

This weekend I will see the Buzzcocks and Fleetwood Mac in Dublin. You could never do that in any of the other "Cities".

So, Dublin, because you can get a variety of things to do which you cannot in Galway (knitted jumper night out), Cork (toasted special night out), Limerick (mind your back night out).

thats true, most of the big bands only play dublin which is a pity :(

but outside friday or saturday night most of dublins bars/clubs are dead except coppers and one or two others in temple bar, bars and clubs in galway are buzzing 7 nights a week during college term, then when there isn't college you have things like race week, arts festival, oyster festival to bring in the crowds

i have lots of dublin friends so nights out in dublin for me are usually good craic, be it whelans, coppers, temple bar, swords, quinns or wherever

i still think galways bars are miles ahead of dublins though, any night of the week within a few steps you have a variety of free live music at kings head, taffees, monroes, cellar, quays, front door and numerous others

Nancy Blake's in Limerick is probably one of the best spots for a night out in the country.

    Sound bar staff/Security
Never and hassle in the place
Hawt womens who are very friendly:)
    Open late
    No cover charge
    Brilliant music

You're reading me wrong. I've never got thrown out of anywhere in my life, what I am saying is that the majority of people that go out in Dublin (from what I've seen) stand around looking at each other for the majority of the night sipping on their €6.50 pints of Guinness. Rather than jumping around having fun, I wasn't saying people should mosh everywhere they go out. There is obviously a time and a place for that where everybody can enjoy it. But everywhere in Dublin seems to be restricted to minimal fun, maximum boringness. The only place that comes close to being remotely fun in Dublin is Coppers and its a dive.

As for the arm wrestling, its just a bit of fun. Not the big serious thing that you make it out to be. Its meant to be fun among friends (especially when there is money involved :) ). Who cares what anyone else thinks? So please stop with the twisting of words. If you're going to have a proper arguement over this you're going to have to answer me straight, without messing about with what I've said.

If you walked into a club what would you do? Just stand there sipping your pint and dancing like someone from X Factor all night? If that is your idea of fun then you're welcome to your city. I don't have to worry about it, because I don't bother with Dublin. There are other cities as I have already mentioned that have twice as much to do, infinite times more vibrant and are infinite times friendlier than Dublin.

As I've already said, its the reason why alot of Dubs are living elsewhere these days. Most of them are looking to live a little.
