Mac Room, Printers, Loss of D01??? [Mod Warning Post #26]

Was there an actual need for a Mac room to be installed in the college in IT102- walked past today and i think theres about 10 lectures in there for the whole week. We had to move out of there after 2 weeks of doing nothing - there was 5 mac's in there!! Then they got them all in and it will now take another 2 weeks to get them sorted with software etc . . . Like what a waste of two weeks and thankfully we've got our classes changed finally.

Along with the demolition of D01 PC room and the new mac room - thats 2 PC labs gone for the students.

And then there's the new PC's in some of the rooms - great that they're fast, but what about access to a printer? Went over to the library and only one room had access to a printer. And software which we will be using hasn't even been installed on most of the PC's.

This is the 3rd week out of 12!!! An utter disaster for a college trying to get university status.

Could be a lot worse. Not sure what the situation with D01 is as they only went at it late in the summer IIRC. At a standstill now. The work on the new machines/printers was done towards the end of the summer break. Not sure the point of the mac room though.

AFAIK its for Entertainment Systems, one of the streams does music recording/production I think.

I have to say i do like the idea of the MAC lab will allow the like of music production to be done much easier. As for the printers it crazy I've found 1 room that still has the printers working IT220

it just gets worse year after year... DO1 was fine, another excuse to spend money where it isn't need.

Ironicly, there was funding allocated to particular course(s) that requires Apply Macs and specific software for them.

Macs are nice and shiney, but why would they have specific need for them, when a lot of the production software used is Windows based, or available for Windows. Macs no longer have the edge, particularly now since they're just glorified PCs in shiney cases.

Adobe's Video production software, is on Windows, and some of their stuff is only available on Windows (e.g. Ultra Edit).
Adobe's Music software, Audition is also available on Windows. In fact a lot of music production software is Windows, or Windows only.. Sybalius (sp?), CuBase, Anteres AutoTune and others.

I dont see what could really be gained, out of having Apple Macs.

I also have no idea what the deal with D01 was, it was like the Masters lab.. locked to anyone that didnt specifically have classes there.. what was it used for?

Honestly.. the only reason now that I would use the college computers.. is for printing and resetting my password. I use my two laptops for everything else.

the music course actually uses Apple's editing software so it's not available for windows :P And how are they glorified pcs? Just because they have intel chips? They run faster and are better than windows based boxes for audio/video and image editing......unless you disagree most of the computing industry

I have a macbook pro, and editing video on it is amazing, i could never imagine doing the same on a windows machine and get the same quality at the same speed,

What has an Apple Mac got, that a PC doesnt have, other than the OS. They are not, by any stretch, better than PCs at audio/video editing, they're on par. If Im going to edit video, Im going to use Adobe Premier Pro with After Effects, I can run these on a Mac or a PC.

Also, "the software industry" is the reason the college is teaching everyone Java instead of C++, when the majority of software applications out there, are written in C++, this is especially true for Linux. In fact it's rare that I ever come across a computer program that requires the Java runtime, but a lot of them require .NET.

The collage would do its students more favours by teaching them the applications that run on both systems (and save money by not having to invest in Macs, or Mac-specific software), and leave it to the students to decide what platform to use.

But let's not turn this into a Mac V Windows holy war, there's enough of those already on the internet. Im only making the fair point that Apple's hardware is more expensive, buying PCs would have saved money and teaching cross-platform software instead of windows-only or mac-only, is better.

No no it's not personal, it's just fact and some people are failing to see that. Macs are used in industry for design, if some people fail to acknowledge that common fact then it's not my fault they are acting of lesser intelligence. The use of macs is common knowledge, his post needs to be backed up if he doesn't want them type of comments in response.

Ok, what knowledge do you have in relation to industry? Have you worked in an industrial setting requiring you to develop applications in C++? Can you reference your sources of data wherein you have developed this hypothesis of the industry having sway with the actual languages being taught in 3rd level courses? Do you realise that the software written by Apple, for Apple performs significantly well on the getgo!? Have you ever recorded music on a Mac and a PC? I have, I've done it on both - yet the Mac platform offers a much easier to use interface, all-round feel, and HAS NOT EVER CRASHED FOR ME DURING A RECORDING! Data loss is bad, and I've never experienced this on my Mac, whereas I one lost an entire Semester's worth on a Windows machine. If you don't want to use a Mac, then don't, keep your opinion to yourself, stop talking about "industry", since obviously you have NO EXPERIENCE working in this setting! In short...

First, you are making this personal, because you attacked me, and not my points. If I was wrong, you could have rebutted with a reason why, but you resorted to an ad hominem.
Second, I never said that Macs were not used in the 'industry for design'. I said a lot of the production software is windows-based or available for windows. This being an observation I made, back when I actually went looking for some of these tools for my Apple Macbook and finding that a number of the ones I wanted to mess about with, were Windows Only (Adobe Audition being one).
Third, the point in my previous post, was simply this: You don't need an Apple Mac, to learn Video and Music production, a lot of the software used, works on Windows too.

Ok so let me clarify, i have been in industry already and i have witnessed the usage of macs for design specific production and windows for your everyday work, thank you very much! care to enlighten me on your experience?

A lot of music software can be done on windows, noone said it can't but it's not efficient. Mac OS does this so much better and if you own a macbook then you should know this. If you love windows so much why dont you go join the minute group of people who install windows over the highly efficient mac OS?

See, I never claimed to have 'been in the industry' I stated an opinion based on my own personal observations, but you guys took it as a statement of fact, which it was not. If I should have been more clear on that, then I apologise.

Now this is what I wanted, someone to post a good counter point to my opinion. Maybe the windows versions would crash more, I've never used them enough to say for sure. But that isnt to say the Mac is a perfect system either, it can crash, and it does.
If the macs really are the best-of-the-best then maybe getting them in the college is a good thing. But in my experience with them, a mac is nothing special.

I no longer own one, I gave it to my sister for college and got a windows laptop. Im hardly a windows lover by any stretch, there's a reason I have a scathing hatred for Vista and still use XP, almost 6 years since it's release, and Windows Server 2003 on my desktop (thank you Dreamspark).

The windows platform and software equivalants of mac software does crash frequently. I have personal experience of this using Lightroom and photoshop and I know which platform i would rather use it on. My workflow is better and more productive because i am not being held back by the slow and complex nature of windows. Windows equivilant of Mac software just doesn't work whereas vice versa the mac versions of windows software does.

@ec18:you use asianux, wtf is that, some asian form of linux.

Laptops these days are accessories like anything else.
Why is everyone talking about performance and power and all that lark.

I am an avid Mac user. I like how easy it is to use and to be honest the second reason I bought it is because of how damn cool it looks!

I dont care if that sounds pretentious but come on. Everyone has a laptop now and of course we care how they look!!

If that wasnt the case, we would all walk around in multi purpose clothing that looked awful but worked really well..........just like your average windows machine. :rolleyes:

Anyway, as I said. "I am a Mac user and I have no problem admitting that a serious pull factor for my laptop is how cool I think it makes me look"

So if you have any problem with that.......get over yourself.

Mod needs to get off his ass & get this thread back on track, it's not a Mac VS Windows thread.

Mac Room looks nice, and that little apple sticker on the window was a nice touch. Had a mess around with the music editing software myself it's a lot of fun, for those of us who can play the keyboard.

Anyone here actually using the Mac room for educational purposes?

Are the printers back working yet? I never had to print stuff so far this year however I do intend to shortly, I've noticed that printer/copier in the business building is back working, Have the printers in the IT building come back yet?

Do you honestly think I have nothing better to do and just sit around waiting for clowns to act up so I can sort it out? It happened within a very short time frame over one day (you added your weight remember). It started and ended within that short time frame. A very good response in terms of modding. 1) The title suggest we are talking about Mac Rooms. The discussion was on the pros and cons of such, tho slightly more on Macs but mute point really.
