    Anyway - overall yes mac's are the platform with regards to design and nowadays music, image and more and more so web production.

    I don't even use them myself but thats only cause old habits die hard with someone people and windows based PC's are what I know - I know there in's and out's - and being a desktop type the aesthetic appeal of mac's is something I don't care for, plus I make my own PC's so they are always nice.

    Anyway I'm going slightly askew on this but Mac is the industry standard now for alot of things, I happen to know some microsoft offices have Mac's for certain design work they do. If students are to be prepared for industry they should be familiar with the tools they will be using and with Design it's going to be Mac Mac Mac for the foreseeable future.

    I think there can be legitimate debate on the pro's on con's of Mac vs. Windows as long as it stays relevant to the topic if is there a need for them in the the College.

    little mod note - just keep it civil everyone, if someones opinion is something you don't like, don't get into petty name calling. If someone steps out of line, report them, don't wste your time and put yourself in the position to recieve an infratction/ban and take the moral high ground.

    Mac's are nice and work, ever since I got one all I wanted to do is to find something about it to criticize. I can't If anything it's too easy to use.

    I think whether we want to believe it or not, it is becoming a standard within industry and i think it's earned that reputation. It's good the college has them Dell's name is all over this College, couldn't hurt to have some Apples around.

    I believe in some Art and Design course in College St they have a class on getting used to using Macs.

    Great to see mac v p.c can create such hostility.

    I dont think macs aren't necessarily "better" than P.C.

    I'm no computer geek but; macs are undoubtedly more stable and allow for a better workflow ( I think).

    anyway on the subject of that 'mac Lab' and massive wastage in the college;

    It makes me wanna jump of the top floor of of I.T building every time I'm looking for a P.C and the only empty room is that 'mac lab' and I can't use 'em cause im not in a certain class, and often every one of 'em is idle and they're the most capable computers in the whole college... but i can't use them, they have to be kept in reserve for a special few.

    How much extra of a registration fee will i have to pay to gain access to this super exclusive special room??

    aswell;

    them 'for display purposes only' card-swipe gate things they have at the entrance to the library. If you're in 1st year ya might not even be aware that they're for swipin' your WITcard as they haven't been use at all this semester.

    but I still had to replace my WITcard (€20) so i could use it last year, this year they're being used as ornaments.

    What can you do specifically on a Mac that you can't do on a PC? (And, no I don't want to hear a big speech on why Macs are better or worse than PC's You are obviously not a computing student so the most you could possibly need (for college work I assume) is Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and an Internet Browser.

    The Mac Lab was intended for the likes of the Entertainment Systems courses those with a heavy influence on Music and design.

    I'm an accounting student but I prefer to use Pages, Numbers and Keynote!

    For me personally the one thing I do on macs that can't be done on any other platform is use Logic!

    numbers and pages are not as good as their office equivalents. So you really just want to use a mac. For any sort of computation excel is far superior to numbers

    It's a matter of personal taste, of course i want to use a mac... that's what I said wasn't it "I prefer to use numbers, Pages and keynote" ???

    I think they're better computers to use so that's why i want to use them.

    I wouldn't say they're superior or inferior, as far as i can see they have all they same functions, office programs aren't exactly cutting edge software so i don't think it makes much difference really, i just prefer macs for ease of workflow.

    Don't get so confrontational about it! There's more to life that computers!

    You do realise that PC and Mac share the same architecture.

    Nothing wrong with office for Mac, works brilliantly if you need to share office files between operating system.

    I think Pages is a heap of rubbish, i'd rather use the notepad equivalent in Mac

    Anyone in this thread actually using the Mac lab for their course? and I mean the likes of garage band etc, and not Pages or Numbers...

    if ya mean they both use intel processors, then yeah, I'm aware of that.

    It's the O.S I think is better; never crashes or anything like that, I can't fault it in anyway, where as I find vista seriously clumsy, I can't help it, it's just what I think!

    believe it or not I had to download office for mac yesterday as my assignments for my I.T skills module have to be done on office only!!

    If anyone using that mac lab is watchin' this thread and they have a copy of logic 9; please P.M me cause I don't wanna download it!

    Buy your own software, don't be a ***kl. If you need something you buy it. Apple accept laser cards which make it very easy to buy and they offer student discounts. So there is no excuse, and if you can afford a Mac I doubt you should have a problem paying for it.

    http://store.apple.com/ie/product/TQ744LL/A?fnode=MTY1NDA0OA&mco=MTEyOTg3NjA Office for Mac

    This thread seems to be awfully quiet, Have the printers been fixed? I will need to print stuff in the next few days and unfortunately I haven't been in much in the past week?
