A lot of us Irish have disliked the English for a long time. It does not really achieve a whole lot.

Lets try some loving and tell then you forgive them if they forgive you. Then you kiss and make love.

Why can't we just get along.

What annoys me about a lot of people who go saying that they don't like the English and that they would shout for any team but England in a sporting event, is that the very same people will support/die for Liverpool/Arsenal/ Man U etc. and enjoy shows like Only Fools and Horses, Fawlty Towers, Shameless, The Mighty Boosh etc.

I think so... I heard it in passing on some football show and in some newspaper or two :)

Oh... least us forgot the Rugby 2003 and 2007... 2nd place aint bad :)

To get on topic. I've lived here, coming close to 10 years and I've honestly put up with a lot of **** from w*nker paddies to be honest. For the most part its joshing and the inevitable 800 years, blah blah blah... look get over it, we gave you 3 1/4's back didn't we :)

My boss (supposed to be professional) used to always go on and on and on about the English did this, did that etc etc... yet he took his (certainly not hard earned!) money over to our country and bought his car there. And he supports one of our teams... he's a complete (many things) but mainly a hypocrite!

I still get a slagging about being English today, 10 years on, hanging around with the same people and from time to time they play that ra **** to annoy me, but like one of the original posts, its childish, but when they do that I deliberately don't stand up to the national anthem at the end of a night out (which is retarded by the way!) but if I don't get deliberately wound up about being English then I have no problem standing and respecting the anthem and the country. I love it here!

Oh and one more pleb, I'll never forget... I started going to this bar to watch the futty on a weekend (when I was single and I could!) and I knew all the bar men/women and used to chat away to them, but during the 2006 world cup I went into watch England play and the national anthem came on and the t**t behind the bar decided to turn off the music during our anthem, knowing I was English and there to watch that game! I took complete and utter offence to this, it was bang out of order. needless to say I never went in again!

I put up with it, because I give it back. Sometimes the pads don't like it, but thats tough, got to get as much as you can give I'm afraid!

My last Boss always managed to get a dig in about me being English. He was either carrying a chip on his shoulder, or he just wasn't funny, I never decided which one. In fairness, a lot of the times you could see my colleagues cringing at his comments. They all gave me abuse, but it was good natured and I gave as good as I got.

Other than that, I have had the odd dick head pass comments on a night out, but I'm usually the only non Irish person on the piss and I have never once had to stand up for myself as there is always an Irish person who jumps in very quickly.

One English guy I met over here was saying that when he played Hurling as a school boy in Wexford, he got a lot of abuse, a lot from parents as well, but his team mates used to really defend him and there were several fights with players who gave him a rough time. His comment was "I may have been a tan, but I was THEIR Tan" :D

i love all the irish i meet ,both in england and in ireland, and i have never met a irishman yet who did not like me as a person,so i find it very strange that i find all these hate/brit posts,i sailed on ships, worked and lived in bars, with irishmen and even had irish girl friends i was raised in a irish community is south manchester, and my grandparents was irish,i have irish football and GAA shirts ,that i often walk around blackpool in,yet i am very much a english man, stop hating others ,life is then a lot more fun ,i am back in ireland in feb,and i cannot wait

    My boss was just a d**k :)

I have it pretty much the same. I take a lot of ribbing, but 99% of its good natured. I too have never had any trouble while on a night out... and to be honest when it comes to football, I get more of a slagging for being a Man City fan than I do for supporting England! But there always 2010 hey... we have it wrapped up already :) lol... that attitude to winning the world cup always winds the paddies up haha :D

I'm engaged to an Irish girl and we just had a little boy. I put England clothes on him as I want him to know his roots are English too, even though he was born in Ireland, has an irish passport, birth cert and will have an irish accent. He'll probably get a slagging in school for having a tan dad, but hopefully he can give it back as good as his daddy :)

I just hope his doesn't just support Ireland, I hope he has a bit of a following for his dad's team too :) But the thing that would break my heart, more than anything, is if he supports Man United... :\ I think I would have to disown him :pac:

I hope you don't make him wear English jerseys when he's of school going age.

Its a lot more than slagging he'll get. Thats jersey is just a kick me sign with a little red stripe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 385 ✭✭DanGlee

No, I wouldn't "make" him wear one at that age. If he wanted to wear it watching a match or something that would be OK, but not hanging around with his mates... but then again, they would all probably know I'm English, so he have nothing to hide... (I hope!)

I do have a couple of baby grows / caps with georges cross on them, I put them on him sometimes when he goes to his grandads, just to wind him up... because when he stays there, they put Ireland jersey's on him. Poor fella... he's only 5 months and he's being split and torn between origins :D but its all done in good humour... I put the ireland jersey on him when I want the grandparents to babysit him for an evening! LOL! :D

As far as I'm concerned he's Irish. I just hope he will want to support England with his paps from time to time and not hate the English, because they will teach him Irish history in school and I don't want him coming home saying "Daddy why did you do what to did to Ireland 800 years ago" How do you answer that?

The opposite should happen too. People of Irish descent, or even mixed Irish-English in England should be encouraged to support Ireland second and England first. Or Ireland not at all.

Most do but there are exceptions to this - Dermot O'Leary. Fails the Cricket Test.

We have an understanding in our family. My daughter can support either England or Ireland or, hopefully, both. What is not negotiable is supporting Pompey. I have explained to her that one day, in the future, bad people will try and make her wear red shirts, it could be Man united, or Liverpool, or maybe even Arsenal, but she must resist and be strong.

All of her cousins on my wife's side are Man U fans and so far she has developed quite a healthy dislike for their football kits:D

I encourage my daughter to support both, but the thing is, football is a Dad thing so she seems to be more of an England supporter. She is very proud of the fact that she is Half Irish Half English though and getrs very cross with people if they tell her she is one or the other.

Kids, we could learn a lot from them.:D

I was going to post this very query then forgot, its a good question. I imagine the BNP or likewise would have some such, but any mainstream site? I doubt it and if one were started it probably would'nt be allowed to run for very long.

    Its acceptable on boards.ie though.

Nope, the BNP love Ireland. They love the Irish sooooooooooooo much. It is actually in their party manifesto and policy documents and there for all to see on their website, that once they get into power they'll be going for a reunification of the whole 32 counties with Britain, to make one big country. Because unlike all the other foreigners the BNP hates so much, the Irish aren't real foreigners. Not proper foreigners like those brown people. Odearieme no. The BNP know that Ireland would be far better off being part of the new Ayrian nation of Britain. All they have to do is get voted in and it'll be back to pound coins and red post boxes in Ireland. That's how much the BNP loves Ireland.

    They're a shower of loons.

I get pretty much the same here for being Irish - I have got a few 'one of yours' comments and the like - I feel your pain ;)

One of the guys giving it out here is from Liverpool so I have a field day with him!
