    on musical scales
the musical scale is based on twelve even logarithmic steps in frequency

    2^(0 / 12) = 1 THIS IS THE BASE NOTE
    2^(1 / 12) = 1.05946309
    2^(2 / 12) = 1.12246205 the second note
    2^(3 / 12) = 1.18920712
2^(4 / 12) = 1.25992105 this is the third on the classical music scale
    2^(5 / 12) = 1.33483985 this is the fourth
    2^(6 / 12) = 1.41421356
    2^(7 / 12) = 1.49830708 this is the fifth
    2^(8 / 12) = 1.58740105
    2^(9 / 12) = 1.68179283 this is the sixth
    2^(10 / 12) = 1.78179744
    2^(11 / 12) = 1.88774863 this is the seventh
    2^(12 / 12) = 2 the octave

    note:
the fifth frequency is 3/2 as large of the base frequency
so three wavelengths of the fifth match two wave lengths of the the base note

ok matt, thats gone way over my head ....but i is a bit fuzzy:)

the English systems of measures is simple next to the classical musical octave

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,448 ✭✭✭✭joes girls

My My matt are you calling me simple!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,706 ✭✭✭Matt Holck

    oh no no

    a pints a pound
    the world around

but why is a doubling of frequency called an "octave"?
when twelve keys span across each pitch doubling
where middle c is twice low c and half high c

octave indicates the eight white key notes

why not dodecave for all 12 notes
