I wouldn't agree with that, it is a select few of families (big families admittedly) who have a monopoly of terror. I know of at least one site in Dublin where one family arrived and ran out all the other families who were there for years out of the place.

Let's not forget either that we as settled people have our fair share of bad eggs too, but do we affiliate ourselves with them? No.

Finally, I don't see a problem with this conflict resolution program, if they can get the ringleaders to sit down and see sense then it will make countless more lives easier (in both communities).

Thugs of any denomination involved in riots /mass brawls should be dealt with in the same way - with baton rounds, canine units and water canon.

One of the downsides of reincarnation must that you don't get to choose the "culture" that you get landed with.

I understand the racist thing fair enough but if the ordinary people are not able to voice their opinions (not on castration and the like thats just silly) on this particular group of people on an internet forum it doesn't sit well with me. There have been threads about black taxi drivers, theres a whole litany of stuff against the British but anyone says anything about the poor travelling community and they face a ban. We've had a whole heap of trouble at this end of the country with them (fact)- shootings, houses petrol bombed and one guy even had a hand cut off - a few weeks ago I had 3 piebalds let loose outside my house, frighted the bejesus out of me to see these things galloping towards me in the dark, cops were called and lo and behold the next night the same. Its just not right, they have to be held accountable for their actions and not given new houses (like the owners of these piebalds were) etc - just like we would be. /rant over

Ah if only i could say what i really want about the travellin people!
Never has there been a group of people in society that i despise more.
I use the term 'people' lighty.

Simple put the gardai are afraid to deal with these folk and as a result they live by their own rules and terrorise society.

lol, I've actually visited halting sites and conducted interviews with travellers for research purposes, so I think I know what travellers are like.;) What about you? Any experience with travellers? I'm sure you are not just talking in generalisations.

Have you come across a traveller in a job where you pay PRSI, PAYE or VAT?

No, cos like 90% of them are on long term wellare. Why? because travellers believe they shouldn't have to work, always have, always will.

Ha, go into a traveller school and ask them what kind of aspirations they have. Their answers are no different from your typical "settled" child, none of them aspire to scrounge off the system.

I'm sure you can put yourself in this position easily, ask yourself if you were an employer and one of the candidates was a traveller, would you hire them? I doubt you would and travellers are well aware of that. So they don't bother trying.

Don't some get expenses for attending schools and other courses?

Big Deal. I've been to a travellers wedding, a funeral and a 40th birthday party, not the kind of parties i ever thought i'd be at but definately ones for the "Life Experience" file. You think you know what they're really like with your "Research"?
Have a few pints with a gang of them and you'll get a far clearer picture.

Did it never occur to you that they might have been telling you what you wanted to hear ?

Have you ever conducted business with them ?

Or had to confront them over something they were doing illegally, etc ?

Either back that up with some actual evidence with your next post in this thread or do not post in this thread again.

5 posters banned so far from this thread.
    5. I believe 8 posts have been removed due to the offence they have caused.
If you want to make an argument please feel free to so in a way that does not denigrate an entire community or you will be banned from after hours.

It is pretty sad that he has to back up with links what everyone well knows. If I said Ireland had crap weather would you demand links?Course not.

The figure is actually 88% are long term unemployed IIRC. Tis in an old Indo article if you can be arsed googling.

Just dont post in threads about Travellers . There is a high chance you will get banned for your personal opinion .

Ive seen threads were Dubs and Culchies insult and abuse each other which seems acceptable

I hate 99% of any members of the travelling community I've met.

From those I've dealt with I can tell you that there is absolutely nothing that would 'help' them and their pointless conflicts.

Yes, the kids that go to 'traveller' schools get an allowance for attending.

Your personal experiences do not reflect on the general traveller population.

Aye I've been in the company of travellers in a pub before, terrible goings on, brawling with each other and all. Hey though, you know that place Barcode? I go there all the time and I witness regular brawls. Do you think they reflect accurately on their general age group, gender, social class etc etc?
Did it never occur to you that they might have been telling you what you wanted to hear ?

Not really, because I interviewed their teachers as well, and they had absolutely nothing to gain from falsely gushing over their students.

Plenty to lose by telling you what they're really like though.

I have been trying to get official recognition for my own ethnic minority group. We are called the bistards and have lived on this Isle for generations. What makes us culturally unique is the fact that we are genetically pre-programmed to bitch and snipe about anything that does actually cause or may in the future cause us to be removed from our comfort zone.

We generally tend to invent fantastic encounters with fictitios persons which, strangely enough, always seem to back up our point and are quite happy that no-one can definately prove that we are lying. We like to brand any one who sympathises with groups which make us uncomfortable as "left wing pinkos" and talk about how we would shoot and castrate all who do not conform to our world views.

We are all supporters of the death penalty and believe that felons spared hanging by left wing pinko judges should live in prisons constructed in open sewers and be made forage for their own food. The beauty of the situation is that, once we have been recognised as an ethnic minority, we can get away with it all because "that's our culture".

To make things even sweeter, it all gets to a stage where no-one knows if you are being ironic anymore ...

You honestly think there would be no repurcussions from teachers telling you(bearing in mind you're interviewing them) that the traveller children they're teaching are little bástards?
I'd say the parents would take that nicely.
The possibility of it appearing in papers wouldn't scare them either.

I cannot break their confidentiality, so even if they did slate their students I couldn't go to their parents and say "what do you think about this?" It would have been an automatic fail for my project. Also, we always emphasise this point at the start of the interview, so the interviewee knows that they have complete freedom to say what they want.
