i agree totally with the bag tax...except for one small thing. I work in a small shop and when the customers get charged by the goverment for a bag its me thats gets it in the next.

I am the one they give out to,it doesn't mater that its thier fault for not bringing a bag.

Bollocks to this tax, if it was ever about helping the environment, its not anymore. Let me explain: 15c was enough to dissuade people from getting bags every time they went shopping - enough to discourage the purchase of bags, not enough to break the bank the odd time you'd forget to bring your bags.

There's no further environmental benefit to raising the tax to 44c. 15c and then 22c was already enough to change people's habits. This, ladies and gentlemen, is the government abandoning even the pretense that they are caring about the environment; they have identified yet another way of squeezing us.

Encouraging recycling and discouraging waste would be a noble measure, however this has clearly become a revenue-gathering exercise.

    My golden bollox it was.

Was queued behind this fat bint about a week ago, basket full of junk food and an arse on her like a sack of slates.

A score says this one won't have bags, and sure enough she had to get 4 before she waddled out to a huge 4X4 parked in the 'family' spot and not a child in sight.

Charge these goons €5.00 for a frikken bag:mad:

    lazy cow.

Fear not. The smiley suffix suggests a certain approval

I feel your pain. This doesn't seem to happen in the bigger stores like Tesco and Dunnes. People just pay the bag money and thats it. But in the off licence i work in, some folk (mostly the tight scumbag type) get very obnoxious when i inform them that a bag costs 22c. What they dont realise is that the HR dept issue verbal warnings for not charging for plastic bags. And i aint getting another warning just becos some lazy/ignorant customer is unwilling to pay the 22c and expects the bag free gratis. Cue the usual ''Your charging me for the bag?!! I gets it for free in the shop down the road''. Thats very good sir but i'm just doing my job, perhaps you should bring a bag with you in future to avoid this costly tax

i spend 57.20 on plastic bags a year maybe i shud get a reusaeable one now

I have no problem paying for plastic carrier bags whenever I forget to bring one. I re-use them as bin liners anyway.

I have noticed that they seem to be getting smaller & flimsier, especially the Dunnes Stores ones, so more often then not they are split after one use, even with only a few items in them, so it's a bit pointless putting them in your pocket for your next visit as more often than not they won't last a second trip anyway!

You should be able to swap them, i.e., if you bring your tattered Tesco bag back to that store then you can get a new plastic bag at the checkout for free.
So its still 44c or whatever for those too lazy to bring a bag, but those who continually make the effort not to litter get a free bag.

A basic €5 backpack is a godsend by the way, you'll get about 8 years out of it, and you won't look an Alan Partridge style twat walking along with your plastic bags.

Will it make a difference to me? Probably not.

Despite having about 20 plastic bags are ready and waiting to go under the stairs, nine times out of ten I still leave the house without the buggers.

Yep, 44c seems a bit much for a piece of plastic but I'd rather see increases I can avoid than ones I can't. And if it helps the environment at the same time then thats a bonus.

And have the neighbours think your a pauper? Disposable plastic bags are one luxury people shouldn't have to do without, what would the homeless use for socks if people stop buying plastic bags on a whim? If it wasn't for all the disposables plastic bags around when we where young'uns I wouldn't have had any branded toys to play with, I still remember my first Dunnes stores bag fondly.

crazy over reactions in this thread.. can't believe people get angry nd think people are idiots if they don't have their own bags.

what the fuk do ye think the products we buy are wrapped in? every single thing in you're re-usable bag is wrapped in plastic. you're not saving the world.

Don't really care. Reduces the chances of plastic bags in the rivers and canals and generates more tax for govt. - woo hoo! They can tax stuff like this to their heart's content. Better than taxing something else like booze or food.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

    Holly crap

    44c

that sure would discourage shopping without planning

which would be bad news for shops

Everytime I go to sainsburys I bag a few extra orange bags into my shopping bags. I go up every month and I swear I could start selling them down here on the black market :D Remember folks the brits don't charge for bags. Though I might have to start bringing them to the local shop now as I never bothered over 22c. I just used them as bin bags in the house.

This was my orig point. They are still used as bin liners. Thanks for your honestly.

    .

This practice was stopped by the supermarket. They do not accept the back now. "Bag for life" now means it will last forever. This was the preventative goal of the tax. I think you would agree its a contradiction to the tax. The scheme was designed to offset the massive 1.50 they charged for a bag that prob cost them 20c to produce and the got free landfill ink advertising in the process.

Your missing the point. No over reaction afik. We were asked for opinions if you feel it does not matter then it would be easier to just not subscribe to the thread. Calling people idiots is not the way to go. I would consider us all idots to be putting up with this back door tax that does nothing, absolutly nothing to fund recycling campagns.

Yes and yes! the second part makes sense the first part does not. Which is why i said it. The second part has nothing to do with the issue though the issue is the charge on the bag not the polution it causes.

If it were about polution i would be wishing they banned bags altogether, Which to be honest is not a bad idea.

The monies raised by the PBL are ring fenced for environmental initiatives. Bloody good job too or there'd be no money for a lot of worthwhile goings on.

The environment fund I think it's called and it goes towards things like enforcing waste & litter law, which is still a priority as we're in the European Court of Justice for improper implementation of directives and if we don't do as we have signed up to do we'll be in bother ala Greece and the old air pollution fines for Athens a few years ago.

As for plastic bags, they're part of a serious litter problem and I for one have no problem paying 44c for one if I forget me auld sack when I go to the shop.

Interesting point earlier that it may make folks plan their shopping trip as this could also lead to a reduction in the amount of food waste being generated.

Recent study in UK found that up to 20% of the food bought goes in the bin!!

Really, some of the bags I've used are mingin...

How does what people wear have anything to do with plastic bag tax?

Freek all Sunny...just in my experience it's these dozy types...you know the sort..shambling walk...clothes put on with a shovel....dishhevilled hair...unshaven ...who normally could not be arshed to bring a long life bag.

    Catch me nip ?

I work in a shop that sells expensive stuff and if some1 needs a plastic bag I normally don't charge them because i feel awkward asking them for a few more pence when they've dropped a serious amount of cash already. What are the consequences for my actions here?

    A squandered income stream.

You could charge for the bags and keep the money?

If it's normal sized plastic bags, in theory there's this "inspector" from the government that supposedly checks to see if the bag levy is enforced.

This increase makes me very paranoid. We are completely powerless to resist impositions like this because the motivations behind taxes like this are vague.

I see a divisive purpose in so many moves like this, like non-smokers secretly hoping cigarettes went up to 10 euro (but never telling their smoking friends), and the supposedly environmentally helpful things, the emperor's latest gown, are always beyond question. No public activity is beyond regulation any more.

A gentle suggestion to retailers to adopt a maximum number of bags given out per year, internally regulated and using whatever method works for them (a bag associated with a loyalty scheme, reusing their transport packaging creatively.. I worked for a grocer who threw away their plastics) with possible incentives based on the money saved by councils from having to clean bags up, if indeed the policy worked, would be less despotic - but instead, people must comply with a mandate, and we'll always accept it in time.

Having said all that, I hated those people who came into my shop and acted surprised that bags cost money, or would moan at me as if it was all my idea. For those people, I would gladly stand down and accept 2 euro bags :D
