Tommy Tiernan and the Jews.... A Bridge too Far ????

It looks like Tommy Tiernan might just have gone 'A Bridge too Far' this time. I can't see this one going away.

No link, but typed this from the Sunday Tribune today.
Tommy Tiernan has walked himself into controversy with a shocking Anti-Semitic triade in which he jokes he would have 'got' 10 or 12 million Jews during the Holocaust.
At a questions and answers session during the recent Electric Picnic festival the comedian launched an expletive-filled outburst against members of the Jewish community.

Tiernan said: "But these Jews, these fucking Jews come up to me. Fucking Christ killing bastards. Fucking six million? I would have got 10 or 12 million out of that. No fucking problem. Two at a time they would have gone. Hold hands, get in there, leave us your teeth and your glasses."

Jewish Fine Gael TD Alan Shatter branded the comments as 'Demented' and called Tiernans observation "A disgusting and unacceptable outburst"

Speaking to the Sunday Tribune, Shatter said: "He has quite clearly brought to the surface his own prejudices and what he said is more a commentary on his own prejudices ans perspectives. Rather than this being a comic presentation,it sounds more like the deranged demented ramblings of a complete fool, which I don't think reasonable people would remotely take seriously. Quite clearly what he had to say goes beyond the bounds of anything that is acceptable and certainly doesn't deserve being described as comedy"

Before making the remarks Tiernan said a comedy stage "is about allowing whatever lunacy is inside you to come out in a special protected environment where people know that nothing they say is being taken seriously"

    Thoughts ??

No worse than anything he's said about travellers, Downs Syndrome sufferers, blacks, or people from Navan. :)

it's important to put this in context.
there was a question and answers session at electric picnic.
one of the questions asked was about people coming up after gigs to complain about jokes. one anectode was about jewish people in america coming up and berating TT for making jokes about jews killing jesus.
i think the comments were made in this context ' i made this joke and to go on....'.
i think if jokes were made about the famine or the troubles in the north there wouldn't be much as much of an uproar...

Its not gonna inspier any huge anti-semetic outburst from the public. This is just giving what he said more attention, and probably wasn't intended as anything malicious.

    Who cares?

People from Navan deserve it though

Tommy Tiernan went "a bridge too far" years ago.

I can't understand how people find laughing at people with disabilities funny. There's a difference between a black sense of humour and being a f*cking arsehole.

It's a shame, he used to be funny.

When will people learn being 'shocking' doesn't make you funny, it just makes you a cunt?

Are you referring to his bit on Downs Syndrome? Have you actually seen it? The only thing there was the voice he put on. Other than that the jokes were highlighting how other people treat those with Downs Syndrome.

So many people came weighing in with their righteous outrage over this and some even admitted they hadn't seen or heard what he said. Thats funnier than the jokes themselves.

I don't get why some people think certain things have to be sacred. Its comedy...everything should be fair game really.

That's his American career opportunities ****ed down the drain so. Hasn't been funny since that Declan Moffit joke

I used to love him, thought he was dead funny and he can still be at times but I've gone off him big time. He tries to be shocking for the publicity of it. An example of this would be when he was doing one of his US stand ups. He said 'i'd love to shoot a person' ...I thought this was amusing, then he said 'I'd like to shoot the Pope!'. This wasn't funny, not because I was offended or anything but he just went over the top.
I feel uncomfortable when he goes on about God and Jesus etc. That rant on the Late Late about Nigerian priests, remember that? He was on about 'Zebedee' up the tree. I was so feckin' irritated..it was 'Zachaeus' ffs you stupid b*stard!'
-and he shouts all the time, no need for it:mad:.

TT is a tosser. I have no time for the pc brigade and I normally wouldnt give a sh!t what any "edgy" comedian says about whatever group of people. But with him its a pure advertising excerise. Anyone whos seen that documentary about him tryin to "break America" will know hes a career obsessed nob who always only tryin to get himself more and more publicity. I dont even think hes actually said anything funny or clever in his life. Compared to Dara O Brian, hes a joke. His whole routine involves running around the stage, shoutin at the top of his voice, bashing the church, bashing minority groups etc etc, just to be as controversial as he possibly can!

If thats the comedy of the future we're fcuked.

Interesting little video Here examining the psychology behind Tommy's particular 'brand' of humour

seems it's a way of subconsciously dealing with information overload

    worth a look ;)

i've laughed at disability jokes on south park.
paedophila jokes on south park/jimmy carr
    jokes in jordan threads.
jokes about blacks/jews/chinese (i'm not racist when it comes to jokes)
i'm sorry but if it's funny i'll laugh (and i often laugh at myself because i don't take myself too seriously.)

edit: i don't find tommy tiernan funny ,not really my cup of tea,i'll take jimmy carrs or frankie boyles sick jokes over TT anyday.

Yes, I've seen it. A friend made me watch it. I wouldn't voice an opinion on something I knew nothing about!

Everyone's entitled to their opinion, and personally, I find Tommy Tiernan a disgrace. He's rude, he's offensive and above all, he's not funny. He doesn't have natural wit - he just raises his voice and curses.
Any pissed idiot in the pub on a Saturday night could be a comedian, based on his standards.

I fail to see how making fun of disabled people is funny. It just seems a bit nasty, to me - considering that Tommy is able-bodied and is far more fortunate in life than anyone living with a disability.
Also, I'd argue that poking fun at disabled people helps to create social stigma and stereotypes.

That's just my two cents. If people chose to like him and his stand-up, fair enough, but it's not my cup of tea, for the reasons I've mentioned.
