Grew up watching TNG and have watched them so many times as repeats same with DS9/VOY.

I really really liked ENT as I have said before on here, if we went into space tomorrow we would be similar to Archer and his crew and for that reason I like it. Its not 100% PC but it shows the seeds of the Federation and yes even to a die hard trekkie like me some of the storylines are a bit odd I still like them.

    so TNG>DS9>ENT>VOY>TOS

Not much between the last 3.

Which is why it's considered one of the best seasons of ANY trek show? (it was actually the 2nd last season)

as for single story seasons never working, um, have you ever heard of this show called 24?

Considered the best ever? Really? By Whom?
I'm talking about the temporal cold was story, was that not the final season?

The point of the show was to draw in a new audience, something it failed to do. A casual viewer (ie, not a fan) may watch a few episodes of a show, and be drawn in, so long as it is episodic, and not a soap opera.

Yes, I've heard of 24, but I've never watched it. I thought kiefer was quite good in The Lost Boys, though.:D

    by most Trek fans...

The temporal cold war had a few episodes in the first and second seasons and, was finished in the first episode of the fourth season. to say that the fourth season, (or ANY, for that matter) was about the temporal cold war is a streatch by any standards.

Hmmm, most Trek fans I know hated Enterprise.:(
I'm thinking about the season in which Earth was attacked by that laser thingy that killed Trip's sister. Turned out the planet was inhabited by 5 races, mammals, fish, birds, erm, and 2 others.:confused: To be honest, it was difficult enough watching it first time, so I've never watched the repeats, so I'm hazy on the details.
Anyway, I take it by your sig that you're a Dune fan. I've just finished reading Hunters. Quite disappointed with it. Just Sandworms to go.

the general consensus is that the first two seasons were terrible and the second two seasons were brilliant. your thinking of season 3, which is considered the best, having a season long arc. the fourth mainley had two and three parters. truly great.
i remember reading that there was a change in the producers between the first two and the second two seasons...possibly accounting for the massive increase in quality. (though it should be noted that the last episode is god-awful, even compared to the first two seasons)

    +1

Voyager wud be my fav too. Its just the one that always keeps me coming back. Followed by TNG. Origional is amazing but a bit camp by todays standards. I liked Enterprise too. It was a nice breath of fresh air after watching repeats for years :p

    Trek on!!

I originally voted DS9 but having bought and watched all the episodes of Enterprise recently I'd be inclined to vote for that (just to give it an extra vote at this stage :))

I voted DS9. I watched TNG first when I was growing up, but the later seasons of DS9 were the first trek shows that I watched each week as they were first released.

I did also enjoy Voyager, never watched that much of TOS, and didn't get into Enterprise, but am going to watch season 1 soon.

I liked the long story dark war story arcs of DS9, and the same themes and techniques are shown carried over to BSG by the common writing pool between the later DS9 seasons and BSG.

Aside from the war arcs which were more gripping than the arcs in Voyager or TNG for me, I thought DS9 had some great stand alone episodes. Even during the later war arcs there were many single episodes that explored the darkness and humanity in war.

I really enjoyed the DS9 characters. Sisko, when he loses his hair and grows a beard becomes a bad ass, but an interesting bad ass. I think the acting and the character are good, though inferior to the acting and character of Picard. O'Brien and Bashir make a great duo; interacting well together as well as being interesting characters in their own right. O'Brien's war background and resulting prejudices come out, Bashir, particularly when his past comes out, becomes more than just a nerd.

I don't enjoy Odo all the time as a character, but he does have some great moments. Worf of course is excellent and added much to the show when he arrived. Jadiza and Kiera don't stand out so much for me compared to Trek characters in the other series.

Character-wise I think the secondary characters make DS9 stand out from the other series. Garak, Quark, Rom, Nog and to a lesser extent Jake are all layered characters even though they are very much in supporting rather than main roles. As an aside, didn't that renegade officer Michael Eddington show the maquis in much more depth and complexity than the quickly assimilated maquis officers on Voyager? Aside from a few episodes early episodes of Voyager could you honestly see the differences between the regular obedient trained and loyal starfleet officers with the passionate and driven rebel freedom fights or for that matter the former jail bird?

The "bad guy" characters are more interesting and more persistant than the other Trek shows I have watched. Weyuon is one of the best bad guy characters I have seen in any show; malign, cynical, yet ultimately loyal to his cause and bringing humour. Dukat and Damar are also both interesting for different reasons. The female shapeshifter wasn't a character I liked though, and I never enjoyed Winn as a foil, even though she served a narrative purpose.

Compared to Voyager and TNG, Jake is the least annoying child character in my opinion. He can still be annoying, but not to the extent of Wesley and that little girl from Voyager. The choice to be a journalist rather than a starfleet officer like his dad, sets him apart from conventions and shows that while starfleet officers are the main characters in the shows, they aren't all that is to aspired to in the ST galaxy. As a journalist he does come into his own during the station occupation. Nog is an under appreciated child character. In the earlier seasons he questions and critiques hooman/federation philosophy. Later he becomes a model starfleet cadet rejecting both the differing paths of what should be his alternatve role models; Nog or Quark. And his own war experience adds further depth to his character.

I won't dwell on religion too much other than to say as with BSG it adds nice mystery but it can be unsatisfying when it is used to quickly resolve big plot issues and it is more difficult to resolve the religious ends of story arcs than it is to introduce the mysterious religion set up.

My final part of my pro-DS9 rant is to point out how well I think the show does comedy. DS9 took the Ferengi rubbish from TNG and made them hilarious. Whether in full Ferengi episodes or small parts of other episodes Ferengi humour is done very well. At certain points Quark critiques federation and humans very well and it is presented in a humourous way. But even Ferengi aside DS9 has plenty of humour from Garak, Weyon, mocking Worf and plenty of O'Brien/Bashir stuff.

I voted Voyager, TNG is good too, but I prefer Voyager.

Saying that I started watching ST when I was very young with my Mom. Original Series is awessome!

I love the non-stop combat action of the next generation, as oppoesd to the long, drawn out philosophical debates of DS9 or the stream of softcore pornography of voyager.

TNG less than 50 votes more than DS9? are you kidding me?

I think this poll will be skewed. Why? Ask the age of the avg respondent. Prob 30-40. We missed Star Trelk Original but grew up on Star Trek Next Penetration (sorry Generation) and its heirs. I voted for Generation but original deserves more than 8%

If I had to pick only one the it would be The Next Generation. But if I could apply another one it would be Voyager.

But the TNG is the best by far :)

I love Voyager! I dont know why!!!! I think its because its the only series where the Captain is a woman! Girl Power!!!! You have male captains with male commanders and a female captain with a male commander and a male captain with a female commander but you dont have any female captains with female commanders! am I the only one who has a problem with that??
    But ya! Voyager rocks!!!! :D

Yeah, they put a woman in charge, and the first thing she does is get lost on the wrong side of the galaxy.
Maybe they needed a woman, because they knew that a man would never pull over and ask for directions.:D

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,906 ✭✭✭SarahBM

Ya and if a man was in charge it would have taken them about 70 years to find they're way home!!! Plus he would have blown up god knows how many races along the way!

  • Registered Users Posts: 636 ✭✭✭Ziggy_1972

A man would have thrown Chakotay et al into the nearest air-lock, then promoted Tuvok to 1st officer, then kicked arse!:D
Actually, I thought Nog had a lot of potential, I would have liked to see a series with him as a central character.

You are joking!!! Some of DS9's characters are so laughable!
I would have liked to see the DS9 and Voyager crews involved in a movie though!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 986 ✭✭✭Bill-e

I can't stand DS9, it's really camp. Didn't like any character on that show.
    Cannot stand Ferengi either!

It does fit the star trek formula imo.

TNG or Voyager for the win

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,906 ✭✭✭SarahBM

its a pity we never really saw riker take up his own command! It would have only been right for him to get his own ship after living in Picards shadow for soooooo long! And like what happened to the voyager crew when they got home? did they get separated or get assigned to another mission!!!??? What happened to Seven? There were so many questions left unanswered in my opinion!
    Voyager to win!!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 636 ✭✭✭Ziggy_1972

I thought Nog had a lot of potential, and I would have liked to have seen his Ferengi instincts used in a Starfleet situation.
DS9 is certainly the most grown-up of all the series, especially the first 2 seasons.
Riker was just a watered down version of Kirk. They didn't even TRY to hide it. Giving him T as his middle initial. William Riker only being 1 syllable removed from William Shatner.
As for Seven, she simply went back in time, grew pointy ears and called herself T'Pol.

there's a voyager book series that's suppose to be really good. it's admiral Janeway pulling the strings from home while Chakotay is captain and Tom Parris is first officer. haven't read them though.

Nog was brilliant, in a show where the kid characters are grating, to say the least, he was competant and intelligent. he also had one of the strongest character arcs, comparing him in seaso one to season seven

DS9 here (half way thu watching season 3 now)

was TNG! but after watching all of TNG not so sure anymore

voted for Enterprise because the last 2 seasons are excellent and it shouldnt have been cancelled! some of the episodes such as "in a mirror darkly" are top stuff

    :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,905 ✭✭✭User45701

the only bad thing for me about in a mirror darkley was that i watched it too many times and scott whatever his second name is acting is not exectly that great - i normelly dont care about stuff like that but repeated viewings of that episode have dark archer in my bad books as one of the worst mirror univerce charactors

My favourite series is TNG as it was the first Star Trek I ever saw. Though I did have a strange relationship with it as it was always on when I was having my dinner so for years I only ever saw the teasers for the episodes and the last fifteen minutes. It was only much later I got to see full episodes!

    Typical of this generation.....

    The original of course!!

Never again will there be three characters perfect in harmony and natural friendship...

Without the beginning you would not have the other series, the sets may not have been up to today standards but most people are ignorant to the fact that they were on a shoe string budget compared to today series on TV.
They actually used to stay back late in paramount studios in oder to rummage around other peoples skips from other TV shows and use items for planets, ships etc.

I will always admire the original because it is what it is....no bull****

Never forget where you came from!

I will actually reserve judgement untill the next movie. Did they go balls out action sci fi to draw audience and reignite a dying franchise, allowing them to go deeper in the next movie?
I would think that JJ would like to make it a bit more thoughtful but wanted to get the new crowd wanting another movie first

Wow, i'm three years on boards and only now have i come across the Star Trek forum :)

TNG gets my vote as it is the series that i grew up with and got me hooked on Star Trek. I can remember watching it as a four year old on Saturday nights and being fascinated by it. In later years Sky One would show it at 5pm and i had many fiery arguments with my mother over not being let watch it before i went to do my homework. For me, the characters in TNG and the chemistry between them far out-shines the other series (the original excepted). Some of the one liners from Picard, Data and Q were just fantastic. The many battles with the Romulans, Klingons and the Borg were memorable, some of the plots and sub-themes went far deeper than most sci-fi series, which rely on effects or simple plots alone. Good examples of this would be the love triangle between Riker, Worf and Deanna or Data's attempts to attain human traits. Often the sci-fi part was put to one side and we saw episodes that were full of raw emotion. It was more than just a sci-fi series, it was a piece of pioneering genius.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,391 ✭✭✭PhiloCypher

it was a piece of pioneering genius

Nope the original series was a piece of pioneering genius TNG was merely orginal series redux and given the time to blosom it didn't get in the 60's .

So credit where credits due my friend ;)

TOS was good, but citing "it's the original" as a reason why it's better than the others is a bit stupid.
