Bet it had something to do with motion tracking and/or split screens.

Watch Derren the second the balls start coming out, he puts his hand over his mouth like he's speaking to someone.
why would he even have to speak to someone, they can hear the numbers coming out too.

    He's an entertainer, nothing more.

    I enjoy his stuff.

It's mind trickery, he admits that.

Is he a magician? In as much as magic exists, yes he is a magician.

The things he does to people are brilliant, imo.

I'm going to miss Friday's show though.

I'm sure some friendly boardsie will regale us with the story of how he did it.

Ya I know but there always a reason for him doing something weird.

I think the interesting thing is how he made it so convincing, not that he's supposedly a psychic or whatever, 99% of people are well aware of this, but might be wondering how he tricked them live on TV over something so secretive.

    im gonna go with misdirection.

Chances are his explanation of how he did it will be misdirection after the fact too.

Quick note on the Russian Roulette show - fire a gun loaded with blanks with the gun held to your temple and the wadding in the bullet propelled at your head is still likely to kill you. Jon-Erik Hexum found that out the hard way. The "trick" (or rather influence) of course wasn't firing the gun, it was which gun to fire.

Obviously he didn't predict the numbers, that's the whole frigging point. I'd still disagree with a lot of mathematicians and say that a series of poisson distributions (which the lotters draws are) can be regarded as a normal distribution in the long term but that's only because in my fourth year of my first degree 13 years ago I didn't have to have a part-time job as I was taking the local bookies for an average of 200 quid a fortnight (which was enough money to pay my rent and buy food at the time) getting combos of three for a year. That's a far cry from actually predicting the numbers though, which is actually impossible. The misdirection is the entire point of the show.

Definitely some sort of freeze-frame camera trick.

Compare the camera moments when he's talking in the lead-up (which look natural) to the movements while the numbers are being read out -(which look more like digital panning over a slightly larger frame).

The effect is to feed to your brain the illusion of continuity across the whole section.

As for him claiming, that he had revealed the prediction earlier in the day - MY HOLE. The numbers would've been all over the internet, and thousands would've played them.

saw this tonight, was a bit underwhelmed and I'm a big Derren Brown fan.

First of all, he did not 'predict' the numbers. The numbers were drawn in the lotto and then he turned round the set of balls located beside him to reveal the same numbers in the same order.

So the question is....how did he get the numbers onto the balls or get the balls to read the same numbers as were drawn?

Also there was no audience so there's a huge amount of ways he could have done this.

Entertaining stuff though and Friday should be interesting.

I'm sticking with "the system" and the live footage is switched just after he says, "those are..." when the results footage is stuck in "...the lottery numbers for this week"

I thought that, looked back over it, doesn't seem to be anything else happening on screen that he'd want to avert your attention from.
When I saw it I assumed it was him attempting to look nervous, as if he wasn't already sure of it.

Since we're proposing our own crazy, most likely wrong, theorys, mine is that perhaps the stand the balls are on isn't actually transparent, it simply had a picture of blank balls on it, and while it looked like they were there the whole time they were actually somehow gotten onto the stand while the numbers were called out.
Fits in with the fact that the stand itself seems to be just wide enough to comfortably bring a ball up through.

Also he could have been signalling by talking into his hand, or with his right hand, which is nowhere to be seen, perhaps someone was there helping him but was behind the TV somewhere or a bit far away to see/hear it.

I noticed that too. :( (I still want it to be the system, which is probably why I think he looks likes he's moving during the "still" shot).

The simplest explanation is that he must have created a time machine.

    What is "The system"?

That's a good theory! Perhaps it was a combination of the split screen motion tracking and the ball-tube thing.

so he recorded this how many million times?

i considered the ball tube thing, but i dont get hwo they all get facing the right way up if they were sent up the tube.

i do hope it's not camera trickery or anything.. his rep was very high but audiances don't have much time for something anyone can do with photoshop / video editing.

He mentions at the start that there are just two cameramen there, but the first one isn't used after 10/15 seconds. Wonder what he was doing the rest of the time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,097 ✭✭✭✭zuroph

He's recording the method its done i bet, which would also improve the chances of it being a split screen thing.

Weight them? Or magnets or something.

+1 for hoping it's not some gay video editing thing.
This could actually be fairly interesting if it's a proper illusion, just an anti-climax if it's special effects.

Or was it just a fake gun without blanks and squibs in the bags of sand he fired into?

Hmmmm..... yes that's much more likely.

I'd be very surprised if it's any kind of camera trick, he's been very adamant in the past about never using camera tricks.

I was right!!! (as were many others here)

After the balls are revealed, you can that the one on the end is slightly higher (on the left, as they face AWAY)

Somewhere between 5:06 and 5:10 you can see the faded transition from the frozen stabilised shot and the new 'correct' balls, in other words, you can see the one on the end RISE UP!!

It would have been perfect only for that mistake!

Only 13,841,287,201 times! (actually less but I'm not working it out)

As I said I think it probably was a still shot (does look like a digital pan) but I just want it to be like the system coz that'd be nuts.

It would be irritating if it's camera trickery. He says you can try it out yourself, not many people would have the setup for that.
