Ya me too assumed it would be a "yes you got it" or "PFO" otherwise they'd be getting a crazy amount of phone calls! Well congrats to those who did and best of luck with next stage!

I've found this thread really interesting , I applied for a Cadetship a looonnngg time ago ( 80's ) it was a totally different process then - interviews and medical but no fitness test - I made it to the final interview but that was as far as I got . The big difference now is this exam everyone is talking about , when I applied there was a widespread perception that the majority of cadetships went to the sons/daughters of serving Army officers or to put it bluntly there was a huge ' pull ' factor involved. The exam I would like to think goes some way to reducing the scope for nepotism and making the whole process more transparent - is this now the case ?

The way the DF does it, is to notify successful candidates immediately, and afterwards the unsuccessful ones.

Well the tests it would appear were marked/supervised and administered by the public service appointments commission so I would suggest that unsuitable candidates would be weeded out by first test. The other thing is that they have introduced some new scoring criteria for selection - a detailed explanation of how this process came about is in the Defence Forces review. Thats not to say that kids of serving officers mightn't benefit from their parents knowledge of what competencies the interviewers are looking for (ultimately the same can be said for any job), however I think they'd have to deliver the goods come interview and get past the test these days.

    Don't despair just yet!!

I also applied for a naval cadetship. I rang them up not long ago to ask as I hadn't received any email at all, and they said that I'd probably receive it tomorrow if I was successful in stage 1.

In an amazing coincidence, after the phone call I went to check my emails and discovered that they had emailed me at the same time as I rang them to let me know I was through to stage 2!:D

I think they're dealing with the army cadetships first, as their stage 2 is taking place sooner, and then emailing naval cadetship candidates. As for the unsuccessful candidates, they might have to wait a while before knowing that as a result of the massive number of people going for it!

So hearing nothing from them so far is not a sign of having been unsuccessful, it's just nerveracking!!:)

I'm not seeing a problem there. :pac:

Oh sorry, I forgot to add that the bag of cans would be for myself, Manic and anyone else not a part of the Cadet School.

The students would be far too busy in the Curragh Plains to worry about unimportant things such as alcohol. :pac:

Does anybody else know anyone who did stage 1 and is still waiting on an email?

I did the run today on the track in UL. I did it in 10mins 32secs... so hopefully I won't break a leg before next tuesday!

Note to self: Don't use the phrase "Break a leg" when wishing the lads and ladies luck. :pac:

In all seriousness though, the Fitness Test is a piece of piss all you folk will breeze through it.

Mile and a half (2400m) in 11.40 for males, 13.10 for females, along with 20 pushups in 1 minute, 20 situps in one minute.

I'm still waiting on an email. People have already got rejections on Monday so I'm not sure, does anyone here have any solid info rather than speculation.

Doesn't seem too bad. At least, certainly not if you ever made any effort beforehand.

Nah wouldn't think so. Looks a fair bit easier than the annual fitness test, and thats not even too hard.

Female required time seems pretty soft... it's just under 9 min/mile pace, which over just 1.5 miles isn't too bad at all!

You'd be surprised at the amount of people who failed the run, both male and female.
I saw one guy even fail the pushups and this was last year when people had a months notice.

Right, I'm through, but I've a broken wrist and the cast will still be on the day of the test, does anyone know what my options are?

Slightly nerve racking to say the least, but it's a good sigh of relief!

Sorry to hear that, they'll hardly let you do the pushups. All you can really do is ring them in the morning and ask I suppose.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,635 ✭✭✭tribulus

Several people were injured last year at the time and it seemed to be okay. Just ring them tomorrow and explain, don't just turn up on the day saying you're injured.

One arm pushups?:D Ring and ask would probably be your best option

This thread and its associated event appears to have attracted closet military Boardsies like moths to a flame. Didn't know we had so many.

It's just to ensure that candidates have a a known minimum fitness level to allow them begin military training...once they're in it will get very difficult. Those who can barely pass it will find things quite difficult once in
