this ban is rubbish and the responses of some of the people on here show their ignorance. Fist off nearly all those "samurai sword" attacks reported in the papers were in fact attacks with a machete. Samurai sword sells more papers. Second the ban is on curved swords so you can still buy machetes or whatever if you were so inclined. Third as was already mentioned most blade attacks in the republic are kitchen involve ordinary kitchen knives which cant and wont be banned. And lastly I practice iaido so i do need a sword to train with, its not a piece of cheap crap the likes of which people have hanging on their walls. And those wall hangers wouldn't cut anything anyway. Not every one who owns a samurai sword is a scum bag who bought it in Spain on a budget holiday beacuse they thought it was cool.

This is typical populist politics bullsh*t that has nothing to do with reality. It is another example of the government trying to look as if it is doing something useful.

Obviously this ban is a bit of a joke

BUT to be fair to Ahern etc... they're protecting themselves- I don't know if there has been serious incidents in the past with a proper samurai sword. But what if there IS in the future- then for every person that would criticise this ban NOW there would have been TWO people criticising him for NOT banning them.

So, he seems to have two reasons for this ban 1. To protect himself from future criticism (why I think is fair enough- I think most people would do the same) 2. To make himself look good NOW (which actually makes him look bad)

What if someone in the future is battered to death with a block of wensleydale?

    BAN IT NAAOOOO

It's a stupid law and will achieve nothing. The sharpest blades I've ever owned or used are my hunting knives, easily capable of cutting paper or shaving with. They're not getting banned, nor should they be, so why should a particular wall ornament be banned?

    'But what if' again....

We know for a fact that a certain number of people - to maybe with 10 or so of the final total - between 17 and 25 will die in a given year on the roads. We don't ban cars.

Your not comparing like with like - such logic - Swords v cars ffs? sure in that case and with that mentality we may all roll up and die cause AIR is bad for you.. corrosive on the lungs and all that....

If people want to have them in their sitting rooms - as long as they are accountable for them, I suppose i don't really have too much an issue.
    (IF THEY ARE 100% ACCOUNTABLE)

Anybody got a link to the actual wording and definition of a "Samurai Sword" in the bill?

Need to check if it's still ok for my to carry around my Double-Headed Axe and Barbarian Sword?

Humans did not evolve to breathe a corrosive gas. Maybe pollutants IN the air are corrosive.........I have an ornamental sword. Blunt as butter but I am not going to hand it over to the cops, they would laugh me out of the place if I did.

Moojuice - I wouldn't advocate that you (you being anybody) should. AS long as you (again you being anybody) are fully responsible for the thing. Even if it falls into some gombeens hands.

Would you be happy to be held responsible for your kitchen knives if someone made off with them?

A Garda I know said he was at a crime scene where in a pub somewhere in Dublin last year where a scumbag had his hand chopped off by another scumbag wielding a samurai sword.

I mean, I'd imagine the scumbag would have stuck him with a kitchen knife / carpet knife / piece of wood if he didn't have the sword.

But there's not going to be much of a lobby opposing the banning of samurai swords, so it's a nice easy way to pretend the Govt are doing something, make a few speeches, confiscate a few swords, and so on.

Yeah that was in the Deputy Mayor i think. In Finglas.

But people aren't killed on a regular basis with swords or purpose made daggers/fighting knives...Kitchen knives, however, are a different ball game.

And seeing as you can buy pre-cut meat, why shouldn't they be banned, should we take the 'YOUSE CAN'T BE TRUSTED' route.

Look, if people feel the need to own weapons that is fine.. whatever, if they are no rules governing the ownership of these weapons - who is accountable for them?
If you allow one type of sword to be legally bought and sold, precedence could may well be set, allowing the purchase and procurement of other such lethal weapons. Thats my point.

I am clearly advocating primarily for accountability.

People aren't killed with swords on a daily basis or otherwise. Its great that society hasn't fallen to that place. Lets keep it that way.

But what do you do when all your "kitchen" knives are dirty?

SO if someone broke into your house and murdered your family using one of your knifes, should you be held responsible?

Edit: I see it was said already. Well, two people independently coming up with the exact same metaphor should hit twice as hard then!

And they've been legal this whole time!

Someone who can't spell "you" should be accusing anyone of being thick.

Well considering I have yet to determine what ought to be included in the Accountability provision, I can't say. Off the top of my head - You (being anyone) would be persecuted for the rest of your life - WHY DID I BRING THAT DAMN THING INTO MY HOUSE????
