I'm surprised they haven't banned screwdrivers for the same reason. Of couse now that the Government have read this, there'll probably be a kneejerk reactionary ban on screwdrivers tomorrow.

LOL.... I wonder will they start with a philips or a flat head...!!!

Yes but they use a weapon to play it

With my intensive karate training, my fists are weapons. Should I have them removed? I dont think so buster!

I love my sword, what happens to people when they are caught with them?

So ridiculous, it's not even funny.

One more step backwards for Ireland.

No reason, No remorse, Just Nanny!

God I hate this country sometimes, the government just seem to follow the most stupid off the cuff, knee jerk reactions that are vaguely in the right direction but still sooo wrong.

It's like a school teacher wearing a condom while teaching the class..
    In theory it's safer.
    But....

The problem with Ireland becoming a nanny state, is that we have a incompetent, feckless nanny who's only concern for our wellbeing is to ensure that we'll be available to leech off for the forseeable future.

As for dermot ahern...has the man ever been anything than a complete tool?

Welp, there's the final nail in Iaido's coffin in Ireland.

    Back to using bokken.

The Irish have a centuries old tradition of ignoring any and all stupid laws imposed on us. This is just one more.

Coming soon, ban on pointy sticks.

By banning swords in our homes they hope to minimise the opportunity the criminals have to get their hands on weapons during a burglary. At least that what I think the plan is.

What kind of cóckhead would have a samurai sword in the first place? This bill will have zero effect on 99.9% of people.

I wonder if these guys will finally admit the war is over and decommission their weapons now?

They'd better keep their puritanical mitts off these

Surely weaponry of love is exempt?

Watch. They'll ban airsoft next. And Paintball.

We dont have it as bad as other countries. Paintball is in the process of banned in germany and now they are pushing to ban violent computer games there too. Which is odd because crytek is a german company so they will be forced to leave the country.

Yet as far as i know you can still own a hand gun in Germany its mad.

I have a couple of weapons given to me by various embassy officials and dignitaries.
They are extremely rare and even more valuable for they are the genuine thing and not imitation.
I'll be fcuked if I am going to destroy them or hand them over the government.

    Fcuk them!

So heres the deal, they ban samurai swords in Ireland, thats fair enough I suppose, but people that have them generally have them as an ornament, am I right??

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2009/0901/samurai.html

Right... so banning samurai swords will do what now? I normally dont see young punk kids flailing around samurai swords injuring each other, nor do I recollect any incident whatsoever in Ireland regarding samurai swords. I think its just plain stupid tbh. Opinions?

I haven't read the whole thread only the first couple of posts, but I know a bloke who was murdered with a sword about 3 years ago, took a blow to the neck and was almost decapitated, so I am delighted to see them banned.

Yep, I'm trained amid other things in Wado Kai (14 Years full time training).
Swords and their use was (and still is) a higher level where they are introduced as a form of defence method and how to combat with them, with an aggressor using one on you.

This new rule will change NOTHING!

    Slight difference there

Swords made before 1954 or handmade swords are exempt, so most MA practitioners will have to have some documentation for their katana to avoid having them confiscated (if found, of course).

I'd suggest popping into your local garda station and having a chat to see what they suggest.

I came across this outside a police station in London a few years ago, Would it work here? I could imagine they would need some sort of a reinforced strong box or safe if they had them in Limerick. :D

Some weirdo in my college showed up one day, with his Samurai sword.
Spent the whole day carrying it round and freaking people out...
