Samurai Swords now banned

So heres the deal, they ban samurai swords in Ireland, thats fair enough I suppose, but people that have them generally have them as an ornament, am I right??

Last month Mr Ahern described a recent spate of knife attacks as 'very worrying', but he said the Government was working to try to raise awareness in an effort to reduce knife crime.

Right... so banning samurai swords will do what now? I normally dont see young punk kids flailing around samurai swords injuring each other, nor do I recollect any incident whatsoever in Ireland regarding samurai swords. I think its just plain stupid tbh. Opinions?

Yep, I have quite a few swords as ornaments, including a set of samurai swords, and know a lot of people who also have them for ornaments. Banning them is exactly the kind of nonsense knee-jerk reaction I've come to expect from Irish government.

There actually have been incidents involving samurai swords within the last year, one of which ended up in a man's hand being amputated.

A Garda I know said he was at a crime scene where in a pub somewhere in Dublin last year where a scumbag had his hand chopped off by another scumbag wielding a samurai sword.

I mean, I'd imagine the scumbag would have stuck him with a kitchen knife / carpet knife / piece of wood if he didn't have the sword.

But there's not going to be much of a lobby opposing the banning of samurai swords, so it's a nice easy way to pretend the Govt are doing something, make a few speeches, confiscate a few swords, and so on.

According to the Indo a while back, there was a "spate of samurai sword attacks" recently in Ireland.

Didn't mention when or where.

Samurai swords are hardly an easily concealable weapon....it's those rambo style "survival" knives and diving knives they should be after.

I've never understood the Samurai swords as ornaments though. The original swords were amazing pieces of craftsmanship but the ones you can buy for display are like butterknives.....I dunno, maybe there's a lot of folk out there with japanese great great grandfathers !

Well, they're just ornaments. They look nice. They're not intended for use, hence they're not sharpened, or good quality steel.

I assume it's a ban on all swords? Guess I won't be getting that Oakeshott Type XVIII replica

Or does anyone know - is it a ban on selling, rather than owning?

Just as banning handguns will not prevent crimes involving them (fundamental problem with criminals - they're not licensing their stuff), this will do nothing for knife crime. Be prepared to be fobbed off with the sack of **** excuse that it's to "prevent the development of a culture" of sword ownership. Cheers Dermo!

TBH, I can understand the British cutlery restrictions a lot sooner than I'd understand this. Britain has a unique native problem with knife crime culture among youths, but that's to do with a far wider problem of youth gangs.

I don't think Ireland has a fierce problem with bands of Ronin hassling peasants in the countryside or anything, so I can't see where this came from at all.

There are provisions governing both in the Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2009. Airsoft got fairly well shafted. Paintball got something of an honourable mention, in that it was specifically exempted from the definition of practical or dynamic shooting within the auspices of the Act, which was being banned. (For those not in the know, paintball markers are legally firearms in Ireland. I know they are not in fact firearms, nor are air rifles or air pistols, but from a very legal standpoint, they are).
