Samurai Swords now banned

So heres the deal, they ban samurai swords in Ireland, thats fair enough I suppose, but people that have them generally have them as an ornament, am I right??

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2009/0901/samurai.html
Last month Mr Ahern described a recent spate of knife attacks as 'very worrying', but he said the Government was working to try to raise awareness in an effort to reduce knife crime.

Right... so banning samurai swords will do what now? I normally dont see young punk kids flailing around samurai swords injuring each other, nor do I recollect any incident whatsoever in Ireland regarding samurai swords. I think its just plain stupid tbh. Opinions?

I use mine as a pen. What's more mightier than using a sword to write with?

Yep, I have quite a few swords as ornaments, including a set of samurai swords, and know a lot of people who also have them for ornaments. Banning them is exactly the kind of nonsense knee-jerk reaction I've come to expect from Irish government.

A few people got stabbed, we better ban ornamental samurai swords, that oughta solve the problem!

Will we still be able to see the Samurai swords in the Kill Bill movies when they're shown on tv?
Because the film would be ruined if otherwise. Damn this government of ours.

They're going to be digitally edited out and replaced with cigarettes.

Hmm, I think there might be a saying about something that's mightier than a sword... It's slipped my mind though. No, wait! That's it, a torpedo! The torpedo is mightier than the sword.

Bet ya they'll ban people from writing with a torpedo next.

nor do I recollect any incident whatsoever in Ireland regarding samurai swords.

There actually have been incidents involving samurai swords within the last year, one of which ended up in a man's hand being amputated.

*Still disagrees with the new law

Something synonymous with that of a police state.

Of course kitchen knives kill people? What have they been teaching you in Gerald's for the last 6 years?

A Garda I know said he was at a crime scene where in a pub somewhere in Dublin last year where a scumbag had his hand chopped off by another scumbag wielding a samurai sword.

I mean, I'd imagine the scumbag would have stuck him with a kitchen knife / carpet knife / piece of wood if he didn't have the sword.

But there's not going to be much of a lobby opposing the banning of samurai swords, so it's a nice easy way to pretend the Govt are doing something, make a few speeches, confiscate a few swords, and so on.

Can ya still buy other swords?

Possibly a bástard sword, or a zweihander or something?

I think you're all forgetting the most important part. Only absolute spanners have samurai swords.

Y'know, the type of cool person who buys NINJA STARSSS on holiday.

Marco, there's always Ninja attacks. You just never hear about them because they're Ninjas.

According to the Indo a while back, there was a "spate of samurai sword attacks" recently in Ireland.

    Didn't mention when or where.

Then again maybe the journo wandered into a showing of "The Last Samurai" and got confused?

I'm surprised they haven't banned screwdrivers for the same reason. Of couse now that the Government have read this, there'll probably be a kneejerk reactionary ban on screwdrivers tomorrow.

Agh, you didn't sense the sarcasm. Unfortunate. This is a waste of both our time. Knives do kill people, kids.

Samurai swords are hardly an easily concealable weapon....it's those rambo style "survival" knives and diving knives they should be after.

I've never understood the Samurai swords as ornaments though. The original swords were amazing pieces of craftsmanship but the ones you can buy for display are like butterknives.....I dunno, maybe there's a lot of folk out there with japanese great great grandfathers !

Dont tell the travellers we have swords, theyre bad enough with the slash hooks.

I know a Garda who has a samurai sword hanging on his wall in his sitting room. I wonder if he'll give it up...

Well, they're just ornaments. They look nice. They're not intended for use, hence they're not sharpened, or good quality steel.

I assume it's a ban on all swords? Guess I won't be getting that Oakeshott Type XVIII replica :(

Or does anyone know - is it a ban on selling, rather than owning?

The Gardai should start carrying samurai swords.

    For the lulz.

A hand full of isolated incidents the authorities here ban Samurai Swords yet the humble retractible Box cutter has been responsible for bringing down several planes, doesn't make sense..

Great, so I'm legally obliged to get rid of my (extremely blunt) ornamental samurai sword that has been sitting happily on the mantlepiece for 2+ years, while some mad ****ing farmers down the road can have shotguns

Just as banning handguns will not prevent crimes involving them (fundamental problem with criminals - they're not licensing their stuff), this will do nothing for knife crime. Be prepared to be fobbed off with the sack of **** excuse that it's to "prevent the development of a culture" of sword ownership. Cheers Dermo!

Watch. They'll ban airsoft next. And Paintball.

You will soon catch up with the UK, where cutlery cannot be sold to those under 18.

I'm sure the samauri swords will be banned. Logical arguments did absolutely nothing to deter the Minister from banning legally-held handguns.

TBH, I can understand the British cutlery restrictions a lot sooner than I'd understand this. Britain has a unique native problem with knife crime culture among youths, but that's to do with a far wider problem of youth gangs.

I don't think Ireland has a fierce problem with bands of Ronin hassling peasants in the countryside or anything, so I can't see where this came from at all.

There are provisions governing both in the Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2009. Airsoft got fairly well shafted. Paintball got something of an honourable mention, in that it was specifically exempted from the definition of practical or dynamic shooting within the auspices of the Act, which was being banned. (For those not in the know, paintball markers are legally firearms in Ireland. I know they are not in fact firearms, nor are air rifles or air pistols, but from a very legal standpoint, they are).

which is why theyre on the way out.

I know youre sick of hearing the term Nanny State. But then we get Sunbeds and Samurais getting banned.

actually that might be a good name for an album.

Didn't Mr. Ahern get fvcked out for being useless at his job?

Either way, I'm not suprised at this, the RSA have been making the same style of ads for ages.

TBH, I'm suprised its not a "He owns a samurai sword, she dies" campaign.

No. And if he does now, he's already done his damage. Time to lose him was about a year ago.
