Its probably incase you break your glasses or something while out on the field. At least you will be able to see something at 6/18 as opposed to being very blind without glasses.

EDIT: Beaten to it by pmg58

^Yep I guess thats understandable lads.

I unfortunately need glasses and am not sure if I would be 6/18 without them, think I read earlier in the thread its the ability to read 5 rows down in an eyetest?

Sure I suppose the only way to be sure is to have an eyetest done.

    http://www.i-see.org/block_letter_eye_chart.pdf

Print that out and try it yourself, standing 6m away, might give you an idea, although it's no substitute for a real test. Even if you're a bit short of the requirement, no harm trying. Conditions on the day might be favourable, or you might just get lucky or something.

Well, 6/18 is the same as 20/60, which is a quite poor standard of vision to be honest.

I always found this helpful, but the resolution of your monitor may interfere with the results. Go to your optician and find out what vision you have would probably be the best advice.

EDIT: You're probably best doing this test during the day as most people's vision is not as good at night when their pupils are dilated and eyes are tired.

Ah thanks very much thats great! Did you really mean stand 6 metres away? Is that how far away you would stand in the defense forces eyetest? If so I definately wouldn't meet 6/18. Even at 6 feet I'm struggling to get 5 down.

Damn Call of Duty ruined my vision lol.

You need to be able to see the line with P D C on it at 6m to pass. Again, try the test in the morning when your eyes are awake and pupils are back to normal.

They have a minimum for if your glasses get knocked off, don't know how they came to that particular prescription but that's the minimum.

I will thanks alot for the link aswell, really appreciate it. I can barely make out PDC at 6 metres but it could because I know the letters are PDC lol.

They have a desktop instrument which you look into, rather than the usual chart on a wall. It tests both your visual acuity and colour vision. And yes, Delta Kilo, the lower limit is pretty crap, I'm at it and I wouldn't like being in a firefight without my glasses! On the flip-side, I've been on a load of tactical exercises and I've never worried about my glasses. Except when it's warm and raining - in that condition I'm glad I'm not 1 scout :p

I've the tests on Monday too.

What's the navy's view on Asthma? I know the Royal Navy don't allow you in with it, but I didn't see it mentioned on the form for the Cadetships here.

My asthma's very mild-doesn't need much medication or monitoring, just dusty places have a bad effect on me, otherwise it goes unnoticed.

Just out of curiosity, how were people dressed at the test this morning? I've got it tomorrow @ 9, so just wondering :)

It was a mix. I wore a suit, others were smart casual, whilst there were lads in football tops, hoodies and trackies.

Mix of everything really, a few guys in suits, others in trousers and shirts, and others as Neil says in jeans/trackies and hoodies. Doesn't hurt to look smart I reckon. Was about 7 PDF people wandering around as well keeping an eye on things. Good luck with it!

I was the opposite, grand at the maths but dont have a clue how I did in the verbal one - typical engineer! Job sim one was very interesting I thought. Ah sure, let the waiting begin...:)

Reckon I'll be the same, nothing like a CS degree to mangle your verbal reasoning abilities!

I done arts (got my result today yay!) - history and politics, so i'm better at the verbal.

I must say, aside from the trackies and hoodies, there was a lot of walter mittys there as well. One was sitting right behind me.

I cant understand why someone would go to something like that in trackies and football tops:confused:

I know its not an interview but jesus, are a shirt and jeans too much to ask?!

Good luck to all who took part today, when will you find out how you did?

How many will get through to stage 2?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,212 ✭✭✭Delta Kilo

They just said the number will be decided by the defence forces.

There is probably a cut off score in the aptitude tests and anyone above that will go forward.

I thought the tests were ok overall, I had enough time for everything anyway. A lot of people seemed to struggle with the maths section I noticed. Well done to everyone today, and good luck to anyone doing it tomorrow.

Was surprised at the mix of clothing people wore...I wore a shirt and trousers myself, there were a fair few wearing suits which looked grand, but there was one guy "slightly" overdressed. But thats far better than the lads who looked like they'd been dragged through a hedge backwards, the lads with their tracksuit bottoms tucked into their socks...I could hardly believe it to be honest.

And for the group of RDF lads chatting about their latest exercise loud enough for everyone else to hear, there is no way in hell you fired 6000 rounds through a GPMG.

EDIT: And when the email says to be at the test centre at 08.40, and you don't arrive until 09.15, you might struggle with life in the Defence Forces.

Don't suppose they were a big group of lads in suits were they? Heard a group like this sitting in insomnia coffee across the road before the 12:30 session and they were clearly RDF and had sat the first session. They were holding a very loud conversation in the cafe letting everyone know they were RDF and sounded like a group of gimps.........

Tests were fine. The realistic job simulation was tough because there really were no "wrong" answers, but clearly there's preferred ones. Hopefully I'll get through....
