Dissidents setting up checkpoints

The reappearance of paramilitary checkpoints on the streets of Northern Ireland has been branded sinister and unwelcome.

Masked and armed men illegally stopped cars in Meigh village in the once notorious south Armagh, which was known as 'bandit country' during the Troubles.

Police officers on routine patrol in the area - just outside Newry and only miles from the border with the Irish Republic - spotted the suspicious activity.

It is suspected that dissident republicans trying to assert themselves in the predominantly nationalist village were behind the stunt.

Local Assembly member Dominic Bradley, of the nationalist Social Democratic and Labour Party, said the men were handing out propaganda leaflets to motorists.

"This was an attempt by this group to make themselves relevant," he said. "But most of the people in this area have no tolerance for that type of activity - they didn't in the past and they certainly don't now."

The leaflets warned people not to co-operate with police on both sides of the border, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and the Garda.

It also advised against people speaking with Sinn Fein or MI5 and carried threats against anti-social behavior and drug-dealing, according to Mr Bradley.

"This is an unwelcome development and harks back to a time which most people here have moved on from and want to leave firmly in the past," he said.

"I am confident that people in the area will not allow this type of activity, which was never welcome, to deter them from moving forward into a better future. I would ask anyone who has any information regarding this incident to convey it to the police without delay."

I almost get the feeling sometimes people just want to start this up again cause they're bored.

Setting up a checkpoint to hand out leaflets?
They only need two people and they could distribute hundreds while people were in Sunday morning mass with far less hassle.
And wow, doing this in a nationalist village.

If they are serious why not test themselves with something more ambitious.

They were armed at the time, that's just not acceptable today

Something will happen soon I feel, just because a tiny proportion of people scumbags want it to

they are a small number but they are trying to step up there activities,
it will be known who they are in there respected areas and if its not pinched now momentum will get young volunteers involved,
that is when the problem will really surface, no brains and following lunacy = innocent people killed or injured, a small visit is required.

Perhaps this is their unique way of finding them, paramilitary checkpoint speed-dating?

Gave out their own leaflets, followed by a swift beating the back of one of those armoured cars. Still though, it's a lotter better than getting shot in the knee caps!:D

I'm guessing that by the time they got wind of it and arrived on the scene, the brainless gobschites would have scurried down their rat-holes like the rodents they are.
We are already giving them too much publicity as it is or they deserve!

Idiotic, out of date, scum dressed up in nothing and nowhere to go!

fcuk them, can we not just forget about northern ireland? let's save up and get all the out-of-work builders and engineers to slap up an electric fence one night.

the problem in norn iron is that there is a market for these fcuks up there, however small it may be. the main thing that bothers me is that these pricks, if you asked them, wouldn't even know why it is that they're fighting.

More interesting in that British "news" bulletin is the comment about the "once notorious south Armagh"

"Notorious" indeed. Such quality impartial journalism.

    Edit. Better quality reporting: http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2009/0822/breaking45.htm
