Apple didn't kill it. They just showed it up for what it was. A bog standard flashy phone. Where Apple's offering showed everyone a phone could, quite simply, do more.
I had three smartphones before this one and it's only now I realise how limited they were. Flashy and fancy looking? Yes. More useful than a normal phone? Not at all.

Illogical dislike is one thing. Resentment requires a sentiment to exist and a sentiment requires a reason, cause or purpose (aka logic). You can't hate for no reason.

I believe he may have meant 'Logic' the software package. He would need to run it on a MacBook Pro because it is cooler than the other Mac models.

Disclaimer: I own two MacBook Pros, an older iBook, and a very much older PowerMac 8600/200, and having worked with, owned and fixed Macs since '97. I still know things about the OS that few of you Mac blow-ins ever will ;) There's not much I don't know about them and so this discussion amuses me. Mac OS 8.6 microkernel FTW!!!

Well, as a previous hater of apple products I can say that yes, they are superior. People only hate them cause they're popular (at least thats why I did). The only reason I dont have an iPhone yet is that both my phone and iPod are still working and I like having 13,000 songs at my disposal. But as soon as they release the 8,000,000 terabyte new and improved ultra sleek model with the "make ladies instantly swoon" app as standard Ill be all over it like a fat kid on cake!

Ah, i was unaware of that program. I sit corrected (because I'm too lazy to stand).

As for the Mac OS discussion. My knowledge is limited to basic use of 8.2 and those since, and even then I'll readily admit it's limited further to basic consumer use. I love the system but it's incompatible with 90% of games I own. I had a Mac Mini for a while, simply as a Internet computer, but it fell by the wayside and I dropped back to Windows for simple compatibilty reasons.
Lately though, I've cared less for games and more for utilities so I reckon a new Mac is back on the cards. Unless Windows 7 is as remarkable as they say.

Anyone know where i'd get sheets of velcro in dublin? Preferably in green or OD, trying to spruce up some standard brit dpm into the spec ops style dpm. I know of a few places on the web but i'd prefer to buy it in person

Disliking Apple seems to be the new "in" thing. Particularly among those who've never actually owned one. Funny that such a terrible, useless, horrible product has become the most aped and copied system and style in computer technology since it's inception. Rivals are actually waiting to see what Apples new tablet will be like before designing theirs so they can imitate it. Sounds to me like the people who matter think Apple's doing something right.

I've had soo many lectures about the superiority of Mac from a friend who's a complete "fanboi", only found out a week ago that the Mac Pros have a modular interior actually. But I've grown up on PC and when I do use them(every now and then) I just go "Argghhh". It just seems wrong.

It takes some getting used to but they are very good, especially if your into design or media. Best solution is to have a PC in the house for general use, and have a Macbook only if you actually need it for college, work, hobbies, etc.

It's a rail gun. No, really, it is. More accurately it's a railway gun. To be even more accurate, that particular one is affectionately called Dora. A 305mm German artillery piece from WW2, the largest artillery piece of the war (and I think ever). It had a sister but I'm not sure that one was ever used.
Railway guns were awesome pieces. Proper over-the-top machines. The last gasp of siege warfare from the dark old days. There's still no artillery syste
that big that is so mobile today for simple logistical reasons; it's easier to shift ten 105's around than one of those.

The military forum I saw that on weren't even sure it was real or a photoshop.

I can't imagine that a multi ton rail gun would be up on two legs tbh.

    But this is real...

Yeah cause you'd need an army of guys laying two lines of railway track within about 20 miles of anywhere you'd want to conduct a war.

CIE. ''we are sorry to announce that the 10:25 artillery shelling has been delayed due to leaves on the track''

The legs are either shopped or that's a picture of it being assembled but the basic premise, the piece itself and the twin track system, is very much real. If she was sitting on those "legs" when it was fired, the recoil from the 305 shell would have destoyed the mounting. The whole idea of having it on tracks was to absorb such a huge rounds recoil.

It's typical you'd show us a that big wheel tank. It being Russian and all. Well, old Imperial Russian anyway.
The idea was sound for the period, the problem was that insanely small rear wheel. Who's bird brained idea was that part of the design.

The tracks weren't that long. It was literally pulled out, fired a few timed, then pulled back into it's hiding place (a hidden armoured bunker). The tracks would have only been a few miles long.

Didn't the Germans have smaller versions of them, on normal bogey flat bed trains that they planned to fire from northern France to southern England.

Where the tracks in a large circle so that it could fire in any direction or could the barrels be moved. To me it looks like if you offset the barrels anywhere near 90 degrees off the direction of travel the whole thing would fall over.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,984 ✭✭✭NakedDex

There were dozens of versions. The Germans weren't the only ones making them, they just made the biggest. Britain had their own, as did the Yanks (and I mean that in the literal historical sense) during the Civil War where Union artillery crews used existing railroads to move small guns and pot mortars.
Some of the European ones were seriously effective. WW2 moved fronts too fast for them to be useful anymore though, which is when artillery became more about being mobile and fast than being huge. Plus they became an easy target for effective raids by aircraft like Hurricanes and more conventional bombing runs.
