They don't seem to check peoples savings. I know loads of peopel who in the past have claimed while having large savings yet they didn't declare them.

Hang on a minute. Is that not fair seeming as some people tend to save so much and will be entitled to less than people who squander their cash?

I would be rather p""sed off if someone got more social welfare than me just cause I have savings. Well hopefully I'll never have to experience the dole.

I have no problem with people having savings and they should not be penalised for that, the money oculd be for sending a child to college. It is when people abuse the system and have tens fo thousands put away and then take everythign they can from the government.

In fairness to soundsham, I think he can claim it was all a joke because tbh I thought he was trolling from the beginning. Certainly had my suspicions as the first post was so blatantly indefensible. Just read the thread all in one sitting for the last few minutes. It was a confirmed troll when someone mentioned, "Ah sure ya need your drink and golf on Saturday" and he then comes back with a description of the 4 not 1, sessions a week and meals out and summer holliers.

That said, I just don't understand forum wind up merchants. Its one thing to wind up your mates with a tall tale for a laugh when out on the beer when you have an audience of mates who are in on it, but its a bit sad someone sitting alone at their PC winding up members of a forum and chuckling to himself like Beavis and Butthead with a mouthfull of Pizza.
Huh,hahuh huh ha huh, dey balieved me...huh ug huhuhuhu

Being honest I don't think that he has the brains to even try and con anyone. Like ourself I never can understand people who think that pullin ghte piss online is funny. It just strikes me as pointless. I still think that he was being serious though as I don't credit him with much int he way of intellligence.

soundsham, my advice to you: shut up and take a break for a while. You did enough here. You can say you were taking a mickey, but I seriously doubt that. So help yourself, just stop.

I'm doing alright at the moment, bit of saving, bit more being added every month. Missus was made redundant a few weeks back and she opening up her own business within a few weeks, so its worrying times to know how it will go, its a service business so overheads are low, if she makes enough to cover the business bills (small) we'll be laughing, anything on top is just a bonus.

When I start back in college in september (after a 2 year hiatus) I will have to survive on 60 a week and my travel will cost about 30. 30 quid a week from september 09 till at least may 10. Oh and registration is 1500. Being a full time mature student with kids and working 2 days a week is tough going.

6K in credit union, 3K in Rabo. 2K in current a/c, on 50k a year, living with gf ( no job ) and 2 kids, renting out our extension which means net mortgage is less than 300 a month.

yet, i worry like crazy about everything, i want my kids to have the vest of everything, just the Celtic Tiger attitude I guess.

working in a bank, i had 30k worth of shares 2 years ago, worth about 2,000 now : (

I just did my tax return for last year (tax year ended at end of March) and the IRD owe me $1000, the bastards. Putting that on a flight home for a visit next year methinks. Hurray!

Otherwise, doing ok. Job pays well enough so I can save a good bit and I send money home regularly to pay off some credit card debt (yes, young and foolish!). That's going down steadily though because I dont use the card anymore. I have a company credit card that we are allowed to use for personal spending. If I need a credit card for anything I use that because your personal spending HAS to be paid off at the end of the month so there's no temptation. That's got me in to good habits with it.

My OH is a student doing a PhD but he has a scholarship and a well-paying part-time job so all in all we're going fairly well. :)

Thats insane and you know what your doing wrong.

    Loan 5K interest rate (10% +)
    Savings 2.5K interest rate (2.5%)

Pay off as much of the loan as you can and restructure the car loan.
You will be much more better off in the long run and then you can start your savings plan with a larger lumpsum everymonth.

but my job is insecure so i might need some cash soon? i don't have a car loan btw.

OP you should clear your loan with your savings, its costing you more interest on it than what you are gaining on your savings. There is surely ways of cutting that 1200 expenditure every week? I'm currently working on mine looking at all areas. Whats your rent like a month?

    like i said

    rent 400
    loan 350
    food 300+
    petrol 60
other things add up too, bills etc

    :(

The dole should be used as a last option, when your truely pennyless. Its not fair to be taking money from the exchequer and by proxy the tax payer if you could still support yourself on savings. Imo assets such as cars, 2nd homes and shares should all be taken into account

What??? So you say that anyone that likes blowing their money can be entitled to the dole but a person that hangs on to some savings is not? Sorry but that sounds totally crazy.

Every employee pays their fair share of tax and should be entitled to the dole regardless of them having personal savings or not. I do think though that a over a certain limit the dole should be decreased a certain percentage maybe over 60 or 70k of savings?

I totally agree, everybody who pays tax should be entitled to social welfare if they lose their job.

you dont know my cicumstances i was out of work at least 8 weeks since last summer 08,how would you manage?

i tried working hard paying my taxes as a plasterer and i did now i'm out of work cant get a factory job either, now i do the odd nixer but i dont have as much time now(generally give they nixer to a buddy he might throw me €20-50 if he makes a killing) as i took a job off a local farmer that i played a bit of golf with, meant to be 3 days a week €100 a day, just happened that things are going well and he now has more time on his hands to go to 1 or 2 more markets etc. so now i do 5-6 days a week cause he has the extra cash, but he knows i rather not work saturdays as i like to golf on sat morn, he can't afford to put me on the books insurance, holidays pay taxes etc.i'm doing my best for my family, trying to give them what i never had,
have a look at the guy working next to you or if you were told 35% to 50% of your office/factory or whatever were for the chop, as has happened in my trade i gaurentee you would not be interested in anyone bar no.1
You my friend, are disgraceful. If dole fraund was lower, deserving people would be able to get more
