100 year 1916 anniversary: commemorations?

What are we expecting to commemorate 100 years since the Rising? Both in terms of festivals, celebrations and memorials and monuments, as well as political events north and south of the border?

In terms of monuments and memorials I like to envisage a 21st Century Irish response to the statue of liberty. Whereas that monument welcomed Irish immigrants from their impoverished homelands to the new world, 100 years on from the Rising couldn't we build a statue of Éire in Dublin bay, welcoming back the sons of Ireland from around the world?

Politically I think it's safe to assume there'll be a resurgence of sectarian violence of some kind in the North. Sinn Fein are planning some kind of modern campaign for a united Ireland but as optimistic as I'd like to be for that, who knows how effective it will be...

UNLESS, when the Scots vote for independence next year they vote Yes and Scotland breaks the Union. Were that to happen, it should certainly shake things up in NI.

Dublin Metro will be done, hopefully, and all the docklands developments should have been completed. I guess we can expect the biggest St Patrick's ever and another military parade in Dublin too.

Not to mention a hell of a lot of cynicism in the media over what has been achieved since independence.

Due to the recently introduced anarchy tax, I cant see this happening.

The lads from 1916 would be rolling in their graves if they seen what we let happen to everything they fought for.

    Whats been achieved?

Violence is put off while we plan ahead for ceremonial bull**** to commemorate the violence of the past?

On the anniversery we should wipe ourselves clean of any sectarianism and build a monument to represent that

We'll get to hear it from then when this country goes to hell. They're already there.

If Collins wasn't killed before his time, i think we may have had a more progressive country many years ago.

Pfft, I highly doubt that Michael Collins would be allowed to hang out with the cool kids in hell.

The climate was very different at the time, to be fair. The famine was, for some, still a very vivid memory; and still a very stirring/driving force. To support the English after that would be to disrespect the millions of lives lost in vain.

While I don't in any way condone terrorism, I can't help but understand the motivation behind such actions. People don't become terrorists out of boredom - it's desperation.

It wasn't the brightest idea either, those who died were actually booed and pelted with rotten fruit by the people of Dublin after they were arrested, they only became heroes after they were executed.

That's complete bullshit. Ireland was actually better off under British rule. Collins is entirely to blame for the troubles in the north. He was a terrorist scum bag which ever way you look at it.

We might as well celebrate the FF tent at the Galway Races,it's had a major impact on the country, and besides, we'll probably be too broke to celebrate anything after bailing out the bankers with all our tax money. Look how far we've come.:(
