Dublin Eye planned

What a waste of money, never mind the most unoriginal idea ever! Thoughts?

A giant ferris wheel, similar to the London Eye, is to be built next to the O2 arena in Dublin's Docklands at a cost of €10 million.

The Dublin Docklands Development Authority last April sought expressions of interest to build the observation wheel, which could be in excess of 80 metres in height.

The authority has now selected the Point Village, at the north eastern end of the docklands as the location for the wheel which will be built and run as a joint venture between the Point Village and World Tourist Attractions Ltd.

Like the London Eye the wheel, which will be called the Dublin Eye, has enclosed glass "gondola" capsules which will allow visitors views across the docklands. World Tourist Attractions Ltd runs seven observation wheels in cities across the United Kingdom including Belfast. It also runs two wheels in Australia.

The company must apply to Dublin City Council for permission to build the wheel. However if the council does approve the project, it is likely to be appealed on An Bord Pleanála due to its scale.

I can see why they'd want an attraction like this. It is something new to put on the brochure but it makes no sense. Like ye've already pointed out it's an old idea, unless it's twice as big as the others it's going to seem lame. Most of Dublin big sites are in the same place and won't look all that impressive from a slightly elevated viewpoint.

It's just not Irish either, tourists come here for an Irish experience not to watch us blow our money on stuff other places have had much better versions of for years already. Do something to improve our natural landmarks and tourist destinations. Complete the Galway - Dublin motorway so it's easier to see places that tourists want to see.

I don't see why people are complaining, sure, it's been done in London, but the yanks and tourists in general will go mad for it, even the Dubs will try it, it'd be an attractive site and rake in millions for the city.

Tourists go mad for these things. Fair enough it's a spin off of an orignal - but that original is doing some serious business. I think it's no harm to boost the tourism industry and capitalise on something that we don't have here in Dublin - a birds eye view over the city. Why not!!

I'm glad the government saved that money by cutting back on services at crumlin hospital, because this eye is what we really needed, and we all know it.

What're you on about? With that attitude no investment will be made. With the revenue this'd generate, it'd pay back enough to fund 20 Crumlin Hospitals (okay, hyperbole, but it'll pay back huge dividends). The government should be starting more projects like this to increase tourism in this country.

Such a bad idea, and the way people are talking on here you'd think London was the first place in Europe with an 'eye':rolleyes:(English-centric mentality aye?)

Make Bray or Dun Laoghaire better(build a boardwalk like Coney Island there along the pier, it would be awesome during the summer nights, live music on the pier and everything. Would be awesome)

I've been up on the London Eye and also the top of the Guinness Storehouse and let's face it, Dublin does not have a skyline worth looking at. The view from the top of the storehouse covers all of the city but you need the white graphic indicators on the windows to make out anything worth seeing.

Maybe if Sean Dunne has erected his skyscraper in Ballsbridge and U2 had built their Twisty Tower down on the Liffey then it might have been a half decent idea but they are but distant memories of the Tiger era.

If any public money or lottery grants are going towards this I will be seething.

Arrrgh, could they not at least named it a different name, like Dublin Big Wheel or Dublin From Above. Turning into Little London so it is.

From the top floor balcony in my office you can see all of Dublin... it's not much to look at really !

Hmnnnnnn there's something wrong with the planned Dublin one.

In London it's pretty central
In Belfast it's very central
In Dublin it's off down in the docklands, not very handy at all.
