Dublin Eye planned

What a waste of money, never mind the most unoriginal idea ever! Thoughts?
A giant ferris wheel, similar to the London Eye, is to be built next to the O2 arena in Dublin's Docklands at a cost of €10 million.

The Dublin Docklands Development Authority last April sought expressions of interest to build the observation wheel, which could be in excess of 80 metres in height.

The authority has now selected the Point Village, at the north eastern end of the docklands as the location for the wheel which will be built and run as a joint venture between the Point Village and World Tourist Attractions Ltd.

Like the London Eye the wheel, which will be called the Dublin Eye, has enclosed glass "gondola" capsules which will allow visitors views across the docklands. World Tourist Attractions Ltd runs seven observation wheels in cities across the United Kingdom including Belfast. It also runs two wheels in Australia.

The company must apply to Dublin City Council for permission to build the wheel. However if the council does approve the project, it is likely to be appealed on An Bord Pleanála due to its scale.

Why would anyone want a birdseye view of Dublin??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,789 ✭✭✭✭ScumLord

I can see why they'd want an attraction like this. It is something new to put on the brochure but it makes no sense. Like ye've already pointed out it's an old idea, unless it's twice as big as the others it's going to seem lame. Most of Dublin big sites are in the same place and won't look all that impressive from a slightly elevated viewpoint.

It's just not Irish either, tourists come here for an Irish experience not to watch us blow our money on stuff other places have had much better versions of for years already. Do something to improve our natural landmarks and tourist destinations. Complete the Galway - Dublin motorway so it's easier to see places that tourists want to see.

I don't see why people are complaining, sure, it's been done in London, but the yanks and tourists in general will go mad for it, even the Dubs will try it, it'd be an attractive site and rake in millions for the city.
    Shup will ye!

Tourists go mad for these things. Fair enough it's a spin off of an orignal - but that original is doing some serious business. I think it's no harm to boost the tourism industry and capitalise on something that we don't have here in Dublin - a birds eye view over the city. Why not!!

Sure the London one was something like £15 a few years back when I was on it - dunno how much it is now

I hope they build it horizontally rather then vertically so that we can get to make those high g-force faces.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

its gonna make its money back, bit of a tourist attraction.

    Feck it. Let it in.

If it doesn't go down to well some knacker will steal the wheel anyway.

I'm glad the government saved that money by cutting back on services at crumlin hospital, because this eye is what we really needed, and we all know it.

Fook it, my sarcasm detector just exploded...

What're you on about? With that attitude no investment will be made. With the revenue this'd generate, it'd pay back enough to fund 20 Crumlin Hospitals (okay, hyperbole, but it'll pay back huge dividends). The government should be starting more projects like this to increase tourism in this country.

so it's gonna be a nationalised tourist attraction with all profits going to the people?
    cool.

Such a bad idea, and the way people are talking on here you'd think London was the first place in Europe with an 'eye'(English-centric mentality aye?)

Make Bray or Dun Laoghaire better(build a boardwalk like Coney Island there along the pier, it would be awesome during the summer nights, live music on the pier and everything. Would be awesome)

I've been up on the London Eye and also the top of the Guinness Storehouse and let's face it, Dublin does not have a skyline worth looking at. The view from the top of the storehouse covers all of the city but you need the white graphic indicators on the windows to make out anything worth seeing.

Maybe if Sean Dunne has erected his skyscraper in Ballsbridge and U2 had built their Twisty Tower down on the Liffey then it might have been a half decent idea but they are but distant memories of the Tiger era.

If any public money or lottery grants are going towards this I will be seething.

Like the London Eye the wheel, which will be called the Dublin Eye
Arrrgh, could they not at least named it a different name, like Dublin Big Wheel or Dublin From Above. Turning into Little London so it is.

    Too right MayoForSam,

From the top floor balcony in my office you can see all of Dublin... it's not much to look at really !

Hmnnnnnn there's something wrong with the planned Dublin one.

    In London it's pretty central
    In Belfast it's very central
In Dublin it's off down in the docklands, not very handy at all.

    Ugh I hate that mentality.

So because the government has to make cutbacks, we can't have any private investment at all?

Where does the government come into it?

You'll be able to moon at people on the ferries going into and out of Dublin port.

That alone is worth €10m investment.

The London Eye is worth £15, London has an amazing skyline, and there's great buildings to look at as far as you can see. There's sweet FA to see in Dublin, and the location sounds terrible anyway. The Point Village is going to be a disaster, there's so many offices build there already that are going to be empty for years.

    Observation Wheel in Docklands

Clarification Re Press Release on behalf of Point Village

Contrary to the impression given in a press release issued today, 22 July 2009 on behalf of the Point Village, the Dublin Docklands Development Authority has made no decision on a site for an observation wheel. The Authority is currently involved in a tender process considering Expressions of Interest for supply, construction and operation of an observation wheel for a number of sites in the Docklands area.

However, we understand that Crosbie Property Holdings are in discussions with wheel suppliers for a similar project at a site in the Point Village.

    22 July 2009

Great so we are getting two wheels then?:pac:

I would like to welcome our new Minister of Tourism ;):D

If they stuck on Howth Head or Bray or something that would cool, sure if they would just reopen the observation floor in Liberty Hall they would save a ton of money and your still pretty much getting the same view anyway.

Myself and my boyfriend only talked about this the other night.

Dun Laoghaire's website boasts that it is Ireland's Riviera!! Go on out of that!

While I love the seafront in Dun Laoghaire and Sea point they could do so much more with it. I like that the West Pier is the ugly rugged brother but they could at least put some lights on it!

There is a Martello tower sitting empty in Seapoint, why not turn it into a cafe or something, it would be lovely to sit there in the winter :)

the government are not funding this project!! and the point village site is one of about four proposed sites......the wheel will be a temprary structure for about 5 years or so, to start with. it will be a good attraction i think, drawing people to the docklands area and with not only views back towards the city but with out to dublin bay, and along the coastline.
but as with anything, the novelty will most likely wear off pretty quick

And to think all this time I thought the Floozie in the Jacuzzi meant the Millennium Clock. That was the one that was turned on in the River Liffey in '95 or '96 (definitely not 1999, as is often said) and counted down the seconds to the year 2000. It was removed shortly afterwards when it was stopped working due to the water and the stuff in it. It was called the Chime in the Slime.

the more important question is what are the Dubliners gonna name it:

    "the wheel near O'Neils" ?

If you want a view of Dublin go to the Guiness Storehouse and the view is still sh1t, nice pint though.
What's the point in doing exactly what London has, is there any original thinkers left?
