Starting Strength Question and Pull/Chin ups

    Hey,

I've been doing the practical program on the starting strength wiki http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wiki/The_Starting_Strength_Novice/Beginner_Programs and love it so much I'm getting a mate to start as well.

The thing is the practical program requires pull/chin ups and whilst I'm struggling with them my mate is quite heavy and hasn't really done weights before so has no way of doing them least as far as I can guess.

What's a suitable replacement for chin/pull ups with this kinda of program in mind OR should he just attempt anyway and like me use negatives to build strength until he can do full ones or should I let him use the assistance machine?

he could use a lat pulldown or the pull up assistance but make sure he challenges himself! do each pull up slowly and under control, all the way down and then up to chin over. once he starts to lose some weight he'll find it easier to get more of those pull ups

    I would also try bodyrows

And negatives if he can manage any, i.e. stand on a chair and get in the highest position and lower yourself down in a slow controlled manner.

Personally I think that band assisted pull ups are the best way for a big guy to improve.

I've a prop that played professionally here with Leinster and then Rotheram in the UK who in his whole professional career never did a single pull up in testing...that is no joke. Last year he went from 0 in the end of June at the start of pre season to 4 by the end of July and then got 8 before the season kicked off in September and has never looked back.
