What is it with people up there; after decades of hating each other, they now have turned on immigrants!

Can't they live in peace with anyone!!!

A five-day-old girl is among more than 100 Romanian people who have spent the night in a church hall after fleeing their homes in south Belfast.
The group of about 20 families said they left their homes in the Lisburn Road area after suffering racist attacks for almost a week.

I love the smell of sweeping generalisations in the morning!

There's always been that element to loyalism. It's why there's such close links between and groups like the BNP.

Sure, why end the hate? Certain "types" need an enemy, any enemy.

It saves trying to be PC and a lot of typing!

Generalisation is right. You could even be more specific. The UDA has always had links with the BNP and Combat 18. The UVF and IRA being more left wing in nature. Noone could ever accuse Sinn Fein of being rightwing or anti-immigrant in policy. Unless of course you call the planters immigrants ha ha.

    "Norm Iron?"

Is that the name of a mooted Cheers and Marvel comics crossover?

Plus South Belfast is a loyalist area.

Yeah cause there's no racism in rest of the country at all.

    damn foreigners eating our swans

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,387 ✭✭✭✭super_furry

There's a slight difference between people talking ****e about swans and 100 people being hounded of their homes in a concerted effort.

Oh it is not just immigrants, what about gays and lesbians, or Muslims trying to build a Mosque? In Northern Ireland equal oppurtunity means hate everybody.

So we can have a whole thread attacking the Loyalist/Protestant population in Northern Ireland but we can say nothing about Irish Travellers:confused:

    Double standards. Where?

There is a world of difference between a ethnic group and a political group.

Now, having said that. It is unfair to make sweeping generalizations about the whole lot of the North, but singling out Loyalist groups, who have known links to far right group is perfectly valid point in the discussion, as there is a possibility that they are involved.

it's true, there's a lot more bigotry going on up there, they seem to lap it up, this has been going on for years, i remember watching a program about people from the Chinese community being hounded out of their homes and their shops being attacked etc a few years ago up there. Their scum must be even more stupid/intolerant as ours.

So you have seen one documentary a few years ago and this makes you an authority on the subject?

    In After Hours, it does.

To be fair to the northerners, what in their history made you think they, in general, are the tolerant type? At least there open and consistent about it.

That means they could come down here?

Be careful. When they cross the border, they magically morph from innocent victims of human-rights abuse to durty swan-eating, roundabout-squatting bastids.

Nothing new with these attacks. We've had the Loyalists attack Catholic Irish, Polish, Chinese and even French people in the recent past.
I don't see it as a religous issue but more a class one.

Racism is a problem every where, Northern Ireland is no different. For example, anti-Semitism is a growing problem in certain areas of Europe. Racist hate crime has been increasing in the UK in general over the last few years.

I'm sure the list goes on and on.

local people are the last to know, look at kensika monshengwo, the training officer for the ncc on racism in ireland said,i have witnessed first hand the sneering authoritarianism,i also have to meet a coloured person who has not experienced racism in dublin ,as said in a earlier post its everyware

While I am in no way condoning this, I saw the BBC report. Romanians in the UK afaik need to go through a work permit scheme.

If I may throw the cat amongst the pigeons, and lets leave all the PC bits and pieces at the door PLEASE, these Romanians were Roma. Lets be honest, we have seen alot more making money on the street than we do in workplaces. Are they all working, on work permits? If not, why are they in Belfast and who is paying for the homes they lived in?

Again, not condoning, but it does remind me of the case of the gypsy girl shot dead in HSE accomadation in Dublin, which begged the question of why exactly she was living in a HSE building. It is questions like this that the mainstream parties refuse to tackle/ completely ignore that gets fcukheads like the BNP into office. If the UK/ Ireland is giving jobless EU citizens with no intention of working financial assistance in a time of recession it is a scandal tbh.

they come down here where they are safe in their houses. Of course there is opposition to immigration in Ireland, the EU elections show that opposition is widespread.

People are, however, safe in their houses.
