Kinda sad seeing all those hosting sites gone. I remember thinking Angelfire offering 50 megs was something great. :P

Haha, ah yes....spending hours looking for which host offered the best. geocities, 50meg, angelfire, homestead, tripod, bravenet. good times had by all

Thats a shame. It was a great introduction to designing websites. I remember creating a wrestling e-fed when I was like 15 that all my friends joined.

It was cool at the time, right!!:)

What do people use to make their own websites now anyway? Or do private people not make websites anymore due to social networking?

Let's get the Government to take on all the bad sites, and create a toxic host that we can all pay to upkeep!

R.I.P. Geocities, and your sad illegitimate brother, FrontPage Express.

Homestead always had the better WYSIWYG editor. I made many crappy sites back in the day.

Tripod/Angelfire were the worst because you couldn't hotlink images - unless you renamed them as .txt and tricked them!

I cant believe that websites that i put up in college in like 2002 are still alive and kicking up there !

    Blast from the past..

I see Angelfire are still offering a whole 20 megs webspace

    !

Takes me back to the bad old days of dialup...
That it does. Don't have to move my website, though... it's on Angelfire. It's a great place for storing bookmarks in a site that can be accessed from work.

Wow, i remember back when everyone had a geocities site, and would link it to their avatar in a beseen chatroom :D
I thinkmy angelfire page is still alive, im actually too embarassed to even look for it to tell the truth. One of the reasons i broke up with my last ex, the stalking bitch found my angelfire page from like 7 years ago online and started ripping me about it!! ****ing stalker weirdo bitch

I had a site there on Slane and the gigs that happen there annually.
Most recent update about years ago.
Sadly didnt have a backup of the site and the whole lot was deleted by Yahoo a few years ago.
I suppose bebo/facebook and those new fangled thingies have meant that any joe soap can have a "web presence" without knowing the techie bits and pieces.

a very sad for anyone who likes to browse around lookign for conspiracy theorists and the like...

always used to tingle with anticipation if the CIA-supressed perpetual motion machine machine link i was about to click was hosted on geocities - a sure fire sign that animated gifs and much insanity lay in wait...

Shortly after Yahoo! bought GeoCities they changed the terms of service to say that they owned the rights to any content on the site. It was changed after a mass defection of users. Looking back on it, does that mean I could have put MP3s or porn on and they'd be liable since they technically "own" it?

I never had a GeoCities account myself but two of my brothers had a few, at least three. I also seem to remember that Grokster, one of the Kazaa clones, ripped off the GeoCities 'g' logo.

Good. It was nothing but ads and popups and sh*te.

Jeeze. I had loads of sites on there but i've only been able to find one and I can only access index.html. At one point i must have been knocking out 1 or 2 useless wastes of webspace per week. Good times. *Wipes Tear

    Thank God.

I have a website from when I was 14 up, complete with angsty prose.

I've forgotten the password to take it down, however. Thank Christ it will cease to exist soon.

Edit: oh ****, I forgot I put the drawings up too. oh holy jesus.

Looking for an alternative to Geocities...

Have read though the last 4 pages. The two that kept coming up was AngleFire and Homestead. Homestead however is not free like geocities (just a 30 day trial). The interface of AngleFire isn't great but is a possibility as there's a free offering which looks ok.

Any other recommendations for a geocities-like host? Thanks!

I had a site like that once... just remebered it after seeing this thread. Wasn't on Geocities though was on Angelfire.

According to Google a good portion of the site still exists. It's a 14 year old boy (at the time)'s Dreamcast fansite.

Anybody fancy a laugh? Seems there's an old pic of me up there too!

I have a geocities website, since 1999. It has been bad for the past 5 years, in that the bandwidth available has been severely restricted.

    What good alternative is there?
