That'll take a large amount of sh!te websites off the internet anyway .. and a load of gems too :(

    lol

Hard to believe that Yahoo! payed $3.57 billion for it.

It's creator David Bohnett is involved with OV-Guide now, can't be a bad thing. Streaming TV is the big niche of today

End of an era is right. My friends would spend ages working on their fantasy wrestling websites only to start a new one a week or two later. Probably a good thing it's gone.

aw, my website from 8 years ago is gone.

    3w.2ya.com

In fairness though, I'd say 97% of the content on geocities is rubbish people put up over 5 years ago that nobody bothers to look at.

I was just thinking there a while ago, how rare it is that you stumble across an old geocities style site nowadays, frames, animated gifs, , "site last updated october 98", bravenet visitor counter. scroll bars for goalposts. All going now of course, pulling em down for dem new web 2.0 sites i suppose.

    Ahh..simpler times, gentler times. :o

    Never liked geocities.

I had homestead and angelfire. Go go java WYSIWYG editors.

I can't say i thought it was still going. I remember looking at lots of pages when on dial up.

    Oah...

man i remember them in the early days when it was mostly used for gaming clan websites - along with homestead that is. Im getting all nostalgic for the old internet now. More fun less spam

End of an era indeed! Sites like geocities were in their prime when the internet was still fun and novel. Totally rubbish facility filled with usually totally rubbish content but I think I'll always remember them fondly.
I'm genuinely interested to see any gems on GeoCities.

Here's some I have in my address book that still appear to exist. Whether you'll consider them 'gems' is another question.

Finally, the site I made when I was in 5th year in school will come to a bitter end.

Takes me back to the bad old days of dialup...

Whoah, I didn't even know it was still around.

/* Goes off to see if Angelfire still exists */

    :(

There are still some good electronics related sites on geocities. It'll be sad to see them go. :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,729 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

i made a website there once. all i can really say though is Meh. Plenty of similar services around if you look for them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,441 ✭✭✭jhegarty

Surely they could sell it for a few million instead of just shutting down.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,181 ✭✭✭DenMan

I used to have great time going throught the GeoCities web links. Am big into computer game music and visited midi and mp3 GeoCities pages over the years (before vgmusic.com etc came on the scene). Great times. Sad to hear it's going.

    Heh.
My first and only attempt at creating a website.

I think it got 100 hits. The url was about 6 miles long.
It was pulled years ago because I stopped updating it.

Jesus. That was the mid 90's. I can't believe I've been using hte internet for that long and I still don't know how to use google.

Had to Google GeoCities to what the hell it was.:o

Only the domain name is worth that tbh, which is why they won't sell it.

Web 2.0 (hate that term lol) means that people don't need their own sites containing the stuff that interests them, because the sites of today like last.fm, blogger.com etc allow them to do what they'd be doing on GC with less effort and more chance of finding a following and people who share their interests.

It's still a pity to see it go though

Kinda sad seeing all those hosting sites gone. I remember thinking Angelfire offering 50 megs was something great. :P

The internet's too cool now I guess. I remember people would have guestbooks and they'd be full of "Hey really cool site!!" messages.
Now all you'd get is "Nice site, ******" or "Lol geocities? Fag"

I had a geocities that I never used. Angelfire I think still actually works. 25 megabits of web shítness :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

    :(.

will we now see polls on boards with the geocities option instead of atari jaguar?

    Simple times

Thats a shame. It was a great introduction to designing websites. I remember creating a wrestling e-fed when I was like 15 that all my friends joined.

It was cool at the time, right!!:)

What do people use to make their own websites now anyway? Or do private people not make websites anymore due to social networking?

Let's get the Government to take on all the bad sites, and create a toxic host that we can all pay to upkeep!

R.I.P. Geocities, and your sad illegitimate brother, FrontPage Express.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 667 ✭✭✭Linku

Homestead always had the better WYSIWYG editor. I made many crappy sites back in the day.

Tripod/Angelfire were the worst because you couldn't hotlink images - unless you renamed them as .txt and tricked them!

I cant believe that websites that i put up in college in like 2002 are still alive and kicking up there !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,135 ✭✭✭fifth

    Blast from the past..

I see Angelfire are still offering a whole 20 megs webspace

    !

That it does. Don't have to move my website, though... it's on Angelfire. It's a great place for storing bookmarks in a site that can be accessed from work.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,643 ✭✭✭0ubliette

Wow, i remember back when everyone had a geocities site, and would link it to their avatar in a beseen chatroom :D
I thinkmy angelfire page is still alive, im actually too embarassed to even look for it to tell the truth. One of the reasons i broke up with my last ex, the stalking bitch found my angelfire page from like 7 years ago online and started ripping me about it!! ****ing stalker weirdo bitch

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,987 ✭✭✭✭kippy

I had a site there on Slane and the gigs that happen there annually.
Most recent update about years ago.
Sadly didnt have a backup of the site and the whole lot was deleted by Yahoo a few years ago.
I suppose bebo/facebook and those new fangled thingies have meant that any joe soap can have a "web presence" without knowing the techie bits and pieces.

a very sad for anyone who likes to browse around lookign for conspiracy theorists and the like...

always used to tingle with anticipation if the CIA-supressed perpetual motion machine machine link i was about to click was hosted on geocities - a sure fire sign that animated gifs and much insanity lay in wait...

But who owns the old sites

Shortly after Yahoo! bought GeoCities they changed the terms of service to say that they owned the rights to any content on the site. It was changed after a mass defection of users. Looking back on it, does that mean I could have put MP3s or porn on and they'd be liable since they technically "own" it?

I never had a GeoCities account myself but two of my brothers had a few, at least three. I also seem to remember that Grokster, one of the Kazaa clones, ripped off the GeoCities 'g' logo.

Good. It was nothing but ads and popups and sh*te.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,324 ✭✭✭Alter-Ego

Jeeze. I had loads of sites on there but i've only been able to find one and I can only access index.html. At one point i must have been knocking out 1 or 2 useless wastes of webspace per week. Good times. *Wipes Tear

    oh my ! that's actually sad :\
even though i had my first website on bravenet i still remember finding about anime on geocities sites !
    oh nostalgia

    Thank God.

I have a website from when I was 14 up, complete with angsty prose.

I've forgotten the password to take it down, however. Thank Christ it will cease to exist soon.

Edit: oh ****, I forgot I put the drawings up too. oh holy jesus.
