    tl;dr version?

Esmonde was a dirty cop that got busted by Internal Affairs.

Now he's bitter and out for revenge.

I too thought this was funny.

Well, either this board doesn't get satire, or I didn't make it plain enough!

Regarding the fact that I seem to have swallowed a thesaurus, this was my intention to show the pomposity of Ireland's self proclaimed "upper class."

The entire article ridicules the ridiculous, detached-from-reality lifestyle led by many during the Celtic Tiger, and how, much to my pleasure, many of them have now been brought back to harsh reality.

And yes, it was supposed to be funny, as the narrator reveals his outlandish and unreasonable outlook on life which has been so discoloured by the sheltered life he has led.

    You're bad at funny.

I think someone needs to get laid a bit more often to be honest! ;)

To be fair it had it's moments.
As Sharpshooter pointed out it was probably too long and as Latchy pointed out it lacked a decent punchline at the end.
Unusual choice of 1st post though.

I, Mr. Esmond Fortune... <stuff> ...and that surely cannot be commendable?
So what you're saying is that Ryan Turbidy is the new Late Late Show host?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,264 ✭✭✭✭jester77

I would need the free time of a teacher to read all that!

I presume the thread title is the summary... sorry OP but the best of times floated off in a bubble 2 years ago... last I heard this bubble got lost in the mythical ozone hole, imploded with the fallout spreading discontent among fellow citizens.... so no, it's not the best of times!

    Dear Mr. E. Fortune Esq.

I am writing this to you as after reading your words I felt compelled to join you in your despair and angst relative to your particular predicament. I also have found myself in a somewhat similar position. It started with the properties, then the cars and finally the offshore accounts. Who would have thought it would ever have come to this?

I have not experienced our country’s social welfare system or “The Dole” as others may refer to it, I have sent my youngest two daughters into Leeson Street or Fitzwilliam Square of an evening, so far it seems to be working out ok. With the summer evenings coming in I can only predict a rise in this particular investment, this may be an option open to you. I am aware that some people would use such an investment as a supplement to their social welfare receipts. Cash is unaccounted for and can be used to start new offshore or Swiss bank accounts.

As regards “blending in” with the lower classes I have one option that I have been considering maybe it would help you; while attending your local social welfare office maybe one could wear the tracksuit/football jersey? I’ve heard it works extremely well if you firstly pour beer over it and rub it through an ashtray. These precautions will help you blend in and be less conspicuous. You can also add some small children in buggies to your entourage and shout abuse at anyone else queuing in social welfare offices or while travelling on public transport. If nothing else it guarantees you a seat.

So my good friend we indeed find that life has changed for us. I wish you the best on your journey and would advise you to buy your own football jersey (purely for your own protection).

The Best of Times have somewhat evaded this country but all we can do is hope that it is only a temporary evasion.

    Yours,

    Lady Foxrock Fanny

We Live in the Best of Times

I, Mr. Esmond Fortune, formerly of Affluent Avenue, Dublin More, am loathe to recount my recent unpleasant experiences, but I feel I have an obligation to do so. I apologise in advance if you feel traumatised by the graphic details provided below, but it would be remiss of me not to inform you of the horrors now widespread in our society; horrors precipitated by a most distasteful economic downturn; horrors which I feel no decent man should have to bear. “We Live in the Best of Times”, only one with a most perverse sense of humour could venture such a shocking statement in these harsh, unforgiving times. Allow me to furnish you with the particulars of my predicament.

Good satire. Bad choice of forum, AH is beneath you; should have taken it to Humour!

I once posted a joke in Humor thread .

    Nobody laughed :(

I didn't read anything about dinosaurs in that post. It would have been much better if there where some in it though.

I looked to see how many times the OP was thanked before I went to read it.
