Well, how ****ing typical of RTÉ.

Typical of them to protect to stick to their rights agreements? I presume they don't have the rights to allow content like Eastenders or Home and Away outside Ireland? BBC iPlayer or 4OD not allowed outside UK - it's the same thing no?

Well y'know I get a similar message when I try to access iPlayer...

"Currently BBC iPlayer TV programmes are available to play in the UK only, but all BBC iPlayer Radio programmes are available to you. Why?"

    Typical ****ing BBC.... :)

Yeah and ditto for most other broadcasters in the world.

BBC radio "offline" material is less problematic - the only things they restrict are live streams of certain sporting events which are subject to territorial clauses.

Very nice player. Hope they put up some of their archive.

One problem I've found is if you're using Firefox and have the Adblock Plus add-in installed it won't play.

Disable it and restart and it works fine.

Would expect it. Noticed 4oD seems to be rejecting Irish-based IPs lately? Used to work. Will miss it.

The iPlayer is OK. Fairly small viewing area but picture quality is acceptable.

One gripe: what's with the dog being on-screen? Just can't get away from them.

No problem with Firefox3 even with adblock installed. Played straight away. Very good, simple just the way it should be. WELL DONE RTE.

It seems quite good from what I've watched on it so far.

From a banner on their website. Couldn't get programmes to work for me but maybe thats just my server at work. Great to see them having the beta out there, rolling out with DTT, fair play RTE.

That's cool. Shame it doesn't have more programmes.

I must say congratulations to the folks at RTE, outstanding job.

They seem to be doing everything right with this service and avoiding all the mistakes made by BBC.

It uses Flash, which means it should work perfectly fine on Windows, Mac, Linux and Solaris. Even just tried it out on my PS3, worked perfectly and even looked ok on my 50" plasma. Brilliant job.

Also no need to register or log into the service and a very nice, clean, professional looking interface that is easy to navigate.

I just hope that RTE launches iPhone/iTunes compatible radio streams and I'd be a very happy man.

Oh and flash support for the iPhone so that I can watch these nice new RTE streams on the iPhone.

presume it checks IP so can't access from outside the ROI?

Seriously mods, could you have moved it to a worst place, no one reads the broadcasting forum.

Perhaps the Cable & MMDS & IPTV forum would a better place for this thread, as it is sort of IPTV, but I think the terrestrial forum wasn't a bad place for it as a lot of talk about RTE gets done there.

Thought terrestrial was best place as it is our national broadcaster and refers to local viewing especially with all discussion lately about DTT

Broadcasting is where it stays, and its being merged with the existing thread. If you don't like it, there's another thread over in Television.

Just noticed that Desperate Housewives has been added.
Hopefully some other ABC shows like Lost and Scrubs (Although a little behind) will be added soon.

Hopefully I wont have to rely on internet links so much any more (except for Family Guy and stuff...)

Surely the green smiley was a giveaway.

    I couldn't be arsed.

I'm in the business long enough to know there are ways around it anyway.

Now if only they could come to an agreement with Apple, get those shows onto the iTunes store, it would make great use of my Apple TV which has been waiting for Irish TV content some 2 years now.

I asked RTE if they had any plans to develop for other platforms, a few hours later, they got back to me with this:

Thanks for contacting RTÉ player with your query.

At present the RTÉ player is not supported on any games console. However, we are aware of the availability of Adobe Flash on a number of consoles such as the PS3, but we cannot guarantee that the RTÉ Player will work effectively on them at present.

However, we are continually researching ways to improve the RTÉ player experience and we hope to make the service available across multiple platforms in the near future.

We hope you enjoy using the service.

    Best wishes,
    The RTÉ player Team

Hah, they are obviously reading our posts here on boards, I posted that it worked on the PS3 yesterday.

Keep up the good work lads.

Well I was able to connect to it for an hour on Wednesday afternoon and was impressed. The only programmes visible were home grown so is it possible they are already testing selective access for overseas IPs?
