RTE Planning RTE iPlayer

I am just thinking now that iPlayer is a very generic name for a service, put i infront of a word and you have a new product.

Anyway it is planned for the 1st quarter of next year.

I use the BBC iPlayer for catching up on BBC radio and it's driving me mad. Constantly crashing both Firefox and IE. The old service was much better. It was simpler but it worked all the time.

Hopefully RTE will find some reliable software to use...

Does anyone know if the 40gb broadband service from UPC is available to residental customers? Kind of OTT but it would be good the have a good Broadband speed when looking at audio and vision on the web.

I know RTE need something like this, but look how much money BBC spent on developing their own system, I'm worried that the typical Irish approach will apply and they will waste a huge amount of time and money reinventing the wheel, but ending up with something that works in Windows IE7 only.

Hopefully they have the infrastructure to support this.

I tried to what a live match on the RTE website a while back and it was terrible. Obviously the server was getting hammered and simply didn't have the bandwidth to meet the demand.

Don't know, but it will probably be limited with "contention ratio" and "Fair usage policy applies"

UPC don't have a "40gb" service, they have a 20mb/s service for €40 per month, that is probably what you mean and yes, it is available to residential customers.

However it isn't available everywhere yet, you can enter your details on their site and it will tell you if it is available.

I hope they dont try and do it through real player, they must be the only website on the internet who still uses that crap, I can still remember all the accusations that real used spyware in there stuff, and I believe it.

All we need now are some ISPs with a decent bandwidth cap.

UPC don't have a "40gb" service, they have a 20mb/s service for €40 per month, that is probably what you mean and yes, it is available to residential customers.

However it isn't available everywhere yet, you can enter your details on their site and it will tell you if it is available.

I am sure I mean a 40mb/s service, at least I will check out I was reading later.

I was told that I could get their phone service on their website, only to be told on the Phone I could not get their phone service. I have broadband with them.

I would think that RTE would buy the rights to the BBC's iPlayer and rebranded as RTE iPlayer. It would save money to buy in product already tried and tested. IMO

If people used de interweb universally instead of TV (1000 to 100,000 times less efficent than broadcast) for TV the Internet would be x10 to x1000 more expensive to still work. It wasn't designed for 24x7 video

My phone only does realplayer and the MS rubbish on my linux based media box for Web Tv is
geo-limited.

It's trivial to use Real without "spyware". Also on PC you can use "real Alternative"
Quicktime, Flash, Silverlight, WMA etc are no holier.

Any computer at work only has flash and ie, it was the same at college beforehand. I dont see why they cant use flash like everybody else, it is on most common platforms and anybody stuck on a computer without admin rights probably already has it.

Depends on rights I guess. They will prob have all shows for the republic but not for the rest of the world and most Irish shows available internationally.

Interesting article in yesterdays Sunday Times suggesting people are getting their TV on computer/broadband and watching programmes on projectors/monitors and are now getting rid of TVs so therefore dont have to pay a TV licence. BBC are said to have shot themselves in the foot with their iPlayer as it could mean serious loss of licence fee revenue.

I'd say RTE will be watching this one with much interest but more and more people here will start chucking their TVs and hooking up their PCs to projectors etc!

Is the quality that good on the iPlayer to get rid of your TV?

The iPlayer quality is OK considering it's delivered via the web. But it's nowhere near as good quality as DVB-S2 HD video, or even ITV 1 on Sky.

The only projector you could hook it up to avoiding the licence fee would probably be a Chad Valley Give-A-Show projector.

If it's a full live copy of terrestrial broadcast and watchable full screen on a Monitor or Projector, then in Ireland you would need a licence.

Very likely true in UK also.

The iPlayer is STUPID, but for different reasons. A decent PVR is a better idea.

Will this give RTE an opportunity to argue that TV License fee be extended in to the digital domain.
I don't see RTE doing anything for anyone without getting something in return.

They were demonstrating it at the Young Scientists exhibition in the RDS a few weeks ago, branded RTÉ Player beta.

Interesting and what did it look like etc. any info on the web about it?

I didn't get the chance to play with it but I saw the RTÉ Player logo, the "player" logo was in a yellow coloured font and had a dark background. They had it on display in a full screen browser window.

On a side note I just tried typing www.rte.ie/player into my browser and it prompted me for login details. Boo-urns!

Its there all right and being tested by INEX members of various ISP's for performance issues. Does not use the Windows Media or Real Player but is totally flash based !

RTE are now using what looks like whats described above to show the entries for their RTE Storyland competition.

As you'l see from this link. Its primarly black but the play button and the volume and play position bars are a yellow/gold colour like how "Karsini" descriped the logo?

Could this be it, or maybe a sample of whats to come?

Agreed, I wonder who's son/daughter from RTE got the contract to waste more money.

Now all they need is some programming for it.
I suppose it will be home and away, Eastenders, Friends, and voiced over BBC documentaries re-branded as RTE Wild series. Just thinking about it RTE could be completely replaced by a video recorder and one person hired to press play.

I assume it will be their own productions, such as News, True Lives, Dragon's Den, The Clinic,WYB, etc

Also the two wild productions are not all from the BBC but from European producers such as ZDF.

Blah blah blah about the incest in RTE yawn.

As for the licence fee we did suggest a PBS Levy on all Electircity bills in another form.
