Stereotyping

I've noticed a rout of two kinda things on boards lately.

    Stereotyping and moaning about stereotyping.

Firstly, the thread about people giving out about the Irish being stereotyped as "paddies" and, in more general (if you'll pardon the paradox) with regard to alcoholism.

Then, you bring up a liberal thread as happened recently with hippies, and suddenly people are making wild guesses and labeling them "crusties" and "smelling of piss" ...

... from the same poeple who gave out about stereotyping in the first place!

Now, I don't want to trun this thread into an anti-Irish debate or an anti-hippy debate (or an anti-anything debate), but who is it okay for someone to complain about stereotyping and then stereotype away themsleves, five minutes later...?

    Answers on a postcard...

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Hippies and Crusties are two different things.

Was it the same people doing the complaining as the stereotyping?

In fairness, no, I don't think so, but that wasn't the point I got from that thread.

Back on topic; this is just an example. There were others: culchies, for example, Germans is another one, Americans... And I'm pretty sure the people who complain about the "paddy" jibe are usually the ones to moan about others.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

I love the way people think moving abroad imbues them with some sort of galactic wisdom.

No offence Ikky, but you've made your stance clear on racial stereotyping, yet I've seen you bitching about Ireland and how you're ashamed to be Irish and that the Irish are a bunch of bigots and you're glad to be gone from here etc... ironic no?

This isn't an attack - I generally agree with you on most stuff but that's one thing that has struck me. I have found it from others who take a very left-wing stance on most stuff also.

I also find, especially over in Politics, there are those of a left-wing persuasion who seem to make a point of dismissing anything remotely republican/nationalist (from reasonable people, not the usual 'ra heads) as "chucky"/"shinner" ranting and then fawn at the altar of unionism in order to show how enlightened they are. These same people will then be appalled by Israel.

Stereotyping has its uses and is usually based in reality anyway.
Maybe not ALL hippies stink to high heaven but MOST of them do.
Other fun stereotypes with a grain of truth:
    *Fat people are jolly
*red haired people are bad tempered
    *Mental people have abnormal strength
*Country people are mean, especially those from cavan
    *All travellers like Elvis
*Old people are useless and moan all the time
    *French women are smelly
*german women have haory armpits and are good cardplayers
*Japanese people are capable of great cruelty
    *Irish people are drunkards
    *Nigerians are dishonest
    *canadians are boring
    *Americans are loud and stupid
*truck drivers are murderers or at least, rapists
    *Fat women try harder
*adult men with ponytails are sexually abnormal
and a few others....stereotypes make the world go round!

    stereotype is a funny word

    stereotype
1798, "method of printing from a plate," from Fr. stéréotype (adj.) "printing by means of a solid plate of type," from Gk. stereos "solid" (see sterile) + Fr. type "type." Noun meaning "a stereotype plate" is from 1817. Meaning "image perpetuated without change" is first recorded 1850, from the verb in this sense, which is from 1819. Meaning "preconceived and oversimplified notion of characteristics typical of a person or group" is recorded from 1922. Stereotypical is attested from 1949.

Hang on - I've never said I'm ashamed to be Irish! I find Ireland to be a mostly conformist country (an opinion, not a fact), which is why I moved abroad, but I do take exception to poeple who think Ireland is beyond criticism and people who automatically assume that, by moving abroad, I think I'm better than everyone else:
    Wtf??
I only did it because I cannot achieve what I want to achieve in Ireland.

I was sure you had done - or at least agreed with someone who said they were. I apologise. I've definitely seen you criticise Irish society though.

Oh I'm not having a go at you for moving abroad, or accusing you of thinking you're better than anyone else.

True, that was a general opinion. There wsa one guy who tired to have me banned for daring to criticise Ireland. I know I've been anti-conservatrism, but that's me and I make no apologies for it. Anti-Ireland, possibly, in harsher times, but it's more the conservative and anti-anytihing-alternative-to-the-mainstrem aspects of it that get me. Part of me still feels that I had to move abroad rather than choosing to,

Hey, nothing wrong with criticising aspects of Irish society. LOL at whoever that guy was.
Actually, please get rid of your location so that the next time some genius says "well if you don't like it, why don't you gtfo??!!" you can politely advise them you've done so. :D

Grand so, I'll be going the carrier pigeon route. I'll wait to see if I need further instructions as to destination, I'm not sure your location details are sufficient, but I'll check with the pigeon first.

Throwing German humour and their stereotypical view of the Poles as being thieves, this was a Media Markt ad that got pulled after complaints from the Poles.
