    Also, don't care.
My respect for you is diminishing by the day, Terry. What about the bad example you're setting to the children of Ireland? C'mon, do the right thing, if not for them, then for me. :)

I think that 1 and 2 cent coins should be withdrawn from use and 99 cent coin must be introduced.
why not make all our coins with a prime number value ?

the level of maths here would rise and by the next generation we would be the leading financial centre on the planet

You and your friend must be the cool guys at school going around at lunch time picking up the pennys! Id say the others are flinging them on the ground because they get a good laugh at ye picking them up.

God love any child who follows in my footsteps.
The thing is, I'm not here to raise other people's children, so don't blame me if your kids end up in jail.

Complete lack of parental responsibility is one of the biggest problems in this country and I'm too drunk to care.

A lot of supermarkets have them now. Dump your coins in and get cash back or a receipt redeemable at the till. They take a commission of at least 8% AFAIK.

    Something about sandwiches

in australia, they've done away with 1c and 2c coins. smallest is 5c. if something costs ya 96c, they'll charge ya 95c, anything else and it'll be a dollar, even tho it still might say 1.98 on the till. like they still price things as if 1c and 2c coins were still in use.

but ye, to be honest, i dunno how the OP doesnt get bet up every day. i know i would have been destroyed in my school for pickin up pennies, let alone spit covered ones.

NZ has done away with 1c, 2c and 5c coins. Round up on the 5c or down on the 4c. Win some times for you, but usually the shops price so that they always gain the extra few cent per transaction.

But if you use eftpos like most NZers the it doesn't make a difference. You pay exact price. Its almost as a cashless society over here.

Use to work in a scrap yard when the cars would come in off the trucks we would strip them down. I would start and hour early and only take a half hour for lunch. why?

I used to collect the petrol and diesel from the cars. Never had to fill my tank!

Then I collected all the coins under the seats, Made a small fortune.

Then I got dermatitas from the petrol it was bad so I left,

Still miss the money and the free petrol

    Amazing how coins add up!

Remember JC and driving the money changers from the temple :mad::mad:

To keep your 8% what you do is just put in 9c at a time and then bring the receipts to the till.

    Complete ripoff

I either use them on the bus (plenty of time while standing waiting for it to count everything out) or put them into a little bank on my bedside table.

I think 2 cent coins are dumb. I'd rather just have 1 cent and 5 cent coins - it would make them easier to distinguish when you're looking into your wallet at the till.

I did a dissertation on this... bottom line they're costing the tax payer about €12 million per year. Rid of em!

Can't read that atm, will have a look on monday. Love the title though.

I bent down and picked up a shiny 10cent coin in front of around 20 people in Bus Aras in Dublin yesterday. Very proud moment for me I have to say. I'm on to a winner here lads. The figures don't lie.

Fair point gerry, I agreed with this but then I heard another arguement that said doing away with them adds to inflation.

Send them all to me folks I will look after them. I dont mind counting them either! :D 1, 2 , 3 , 4 ,5.....79,80,81 wait was that 80 or 81? start again 1,2,3,4

Don't wanna totally geek the thread up :p but... it actually could lead to slight deflation. The same reason retailers think €9.99 will sell more of the product than €10.00, they may drop the price to €9.95 instead of up to €10.

I would imagine that it takes some of the satisfaction away and tbh it could lead to problems from new and emerging rivals in the market place.

They don't have 1c or 2c coins in the land down under. I think they definitely have the right idea. They still charge awkward prices though like 98c for a bar:confused:[

Magnets dont work on the 10c coins and they def dont work on the 1c and 2c cause they are copper nickel. I know I just tried :D

Although I have to say if more women bent down to pick them up I def would trow a lot more on the ground.

I am will to collect all 1c and 2c coins not required by anybody. I will even provide a 25ltr drum for filling with a refundable 10 euro deposit. The refund comes in the form of 1c and 2c pcs :D

Just counted all the 1, 2 and 5 cent coins on my bedside locker and ended up with 15 euro! Nice! No effort involved, just repeatedly emptied my wallet of copper there.
