the price of cigarettes are rising again by€2, planned for next week,

for a pack of cigarettes it will now cost €10.10.

i smoke myself and i think this is f*ckin crazy. €10 for a pack of smokes, F*CK That

    (question time)
how many do you smoke a day??
and will this price now make you reduce or quit??
What do you think of this price rase now??

I've been buying mine over the border ever since this increase was announced. I'll be fcuked if I'm gonna pay a tenner when I can get them for 6 quid just up the road. I don't care what damage it'll do to the economy

I have the same problem myself, I love exotic holidays and fast cars and big houses.
Unfortunately I've now been priced out of these markets.
I came to a fairly way outfield solution though, I just don't partake in those expensive habits anymore. That is until someone forces me to, are you being forced ?

Anyone, it's only proposed, they're not actually rising yet nor has the exact amount been deiced upon if they do go up at all.

just buy them on the black market and they will get no revenue from you

    1. book ryanair.com to Poland, Hungary or any other east eu contry (any cheap fare you get 30eu all incl)
    2. get 100 packages of your favourite brand + weekend hotel, spa, girls, rent a car get dental work
    3. come back - you still save 50% and have cigarettes for 6 months

so OP, i just wanted to ask, how can you possibly know what's yet to happen??
AFAIK, that anti-smoking group ASH asked for a €2 increase - it makes good copy so it got media coverage about 2 weeks ago. Since then, there's been nothing, and nothing is expected until the budget on April 7th...
care to enlighten us as to where your sudden fit of impending price rise panic came from??

Well look at this as a really big helpful push in the right direction then.

Sorry smokers but you'll never get sympathy outta me.

You shouldn't be allowed on the internet if you can't spell either but hey

€2 increase on a pack will mean the Irish tax man will get LESS money from me. I'll just book a cheap daily return fare to Spain or another
EU country where I can cheaply and legally stock up for a couple of months.

just buy them on the black market and they will get no revenue from you

that in turn will lead to another deficit to the government so they will increase futher again to plug the hole in their finances. Itll be 12 euro next year if people take your attitude towards buying cigs.

The drink will get hit as well. It's just easier to tax junkies :)

I'm sure you will also fly over there to get healthcare when you develop the health issues associated with smoking yes?

I believe there were/are lower limits on what you can bring back from the
newer EU states (one carton from Poland and the likes) but from Spain,
Italy, Germany, Holland and other EU countries where a carton is already less than half the Irish
price I always bring back at least 800.

If one carton saves me €40-60 on the Irish price and I bring back at least 4 cartons I can safely cover the price of a cheap flight.

If the Irish government complained about the Newry and Ikea effect
they'll soon see history repeated but with another product.

So is buying online legal or what?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,610 ✭✭✭✭My name is URL

Putting the price up to a tenner is criminal, never mind buying them on the black market. If the government were serious about the risks and the difficulty there is to pay for peoples treatment they should ban them outright. Instead of taking advantage of the fact that people are addicted to something that's legally sold

Why not make your own? Get a sheet of A4 paper, dye it brown with a used teabag. Cut it into little shreds. Wrap it in another bit of paper, and pop a piece of sponge in one end.

You'll save a fortune, you'll most likely cut down on the amount you smoke and you'll save the country a fortune when they don't have to pay for your medical expenses.

Or, be proud that you're supporting the Irish economy. Buy the overpriced cigarettes and everytime you light one scream out the national anthem with pride.

Unfortunately it is not legal, you must personally accompany any alcohol
or cigarettes you are importing from another EU country. A group of
Dutch or Belgian wine drinkers took a test case to the EU some years
back. You must also only import for personal consumption and not for
resale. The quantity must also be a 'reasonable amount', in the UK they
set this as 800 cigarettes - I have never seen Irish customs define what
    is reasonable.

Doesn't mean you can't buy online though ;)

Going abroad to spain as a solution is retarded. Tax on fuel that goes into the plane,paye/prsi for the staff, airport tax, corporation tax on the profits.....ye you're really sticking it to the government!

It is perfectly legal. Although you will be required to pay the necessary import duties and taxes associated with them.
