Does anyone know if this will mean that Channel 4 HD will be tuneable? I am still waiting for the EPG upgrade, so I can't test the ITVHD yet, but it seems to be confirmed.

AFAIK Channel 4 HD is still encrypted, UK cards only.

Yeah....dunno what I was thinking there, forgot its FTV. Ah well, some good HD games to look forward to whenever the EPG comes down.

The HD channels (except BBC HD and Luxe TV) have a symbol rate of 29.0, which can't be tuned in manually by a Sky HD box.

Talking about the new EPG, does anyone have confirmation of anyone in Ireland receiving it. Boxes with the Version No. 4E300E only received the update at 4.00am this morning.

its a bit sneaky that sky have re written their software to allow their receivers to receive itvhd which was only suppposed to be on freesat!

I don't care for sky, but surely a channel that is broadcast FTA should actually be FREE to air? In fact if we think about the reasons behind the "other channels" section in the first place, legally they may be obliged to allow reception of it...

But ITV-HD is Free to air, there is no charge, but if the Sky-HD box is not able to process the signal, there is little the law can do.

Was reading all Thompson HD boxes to be updated by end of March, I have version 4E3007

I added ITV HD as a channel but all I am getting at the moment is "This service is currently unavailable"

Anyone know does ITV HD show any football?

    Update:
Just found this, I thought BBC HD had very little on it until I saw the ITV HD schedule!

    Hi Branners,

Is the channel blocked or is there just nothing on?

There is nothing on ITV HD at the moment... That could account for "This service is currently unavailable"

As for ITV HD and football, they have FA Cup, Champions League and some England games in HD. Check out liveonsat.com for details of what football is on ITV.

There is nothing on, and from the weekly schedule there is never anything on! Somedays only have an hour programme on at 9pm such as Law & Order UK. The Liverpool was on earlier but I missed that in HD:(

Thanks for the website mj, will check it out!

What's the chances Channel 4 HD changing to FTA

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 529 ✭✭✭Pat Gleeson

ITV HD have a very limited schedule. The only way to access it up to now was via the interactive red button service on Freesat / Sat4Free. Champions League, FA Cup, some films and the odd programme here and there is all that's shown.

The new SkyHD EPG has somehow allowed the channel to be manually added, and those of you who have the new EPG can add ITV HD and you can see a caption during the (extensive) down time of the channel.

Channel 4 HD may be FTA later this year. Not confirmed, but heavily touted and hinted at in some e-mails users on other forums have received after enquiries to Channel 4. Sit back and watch the boards, you'll be the first to know when something appears!

Do you have to have a phone line connected to get the EPG updated. I have a Thomson box since August 2007. No phone line connected. My version No. is 4E2110. Am I left in the dark ages

I've heard that too. I hope C4 HD changes it's symbol rate from 29.0 to 27.5, otherwise it wont be possible to tune it manually, or better still go on the Irish EPG (possible).

They won't reduce SymRate. That is throwing away quality. Expect most DVB-S2 or HD only transponders to be at higher than 27500

...better still go on the Irish EPG (possible).

If CH4 and CH4+1 are available, apart from the odd programme being blocked, why isnt CH4 HD here?

I thought the original delay was due to programme rights etc.

Previous threads on this have speculated that it could be due to advertising reasons ie only one region for hd so no irish adverts. This would reduce viewers c4 sd irish ads and would cost c4 money

BBC HD symbol rate is 22.0, whilst Luxe TV is 27.0

Over on the DS Freesat Forum there is a big discussion on the fact that ITV HD supposing to be a "Freesat exclusive". But in the past few days Sky HD customers with the new EPG have accessed this via "Other Channels".

    http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=1001663

What I want to know is, What are your views on the ITV HD senario. Should Sky HD customers get this or remain exclusive to freesat?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,108 ✭✭✭mjsmyth

    The simple facts are:

1 - ITV HD is a FTA channel.
2 - A Sky HD box is just a satellite receiver with its own fancy software on it.
3 - Many HD Sat. receivers have been capable of tuning in ITV HD for a long time.
4 - Sky have updated, upgraded the system software and epg for some of their Sky HD boxes to improve functionality.
5 - Sky have not cracked or hacked or done anything else illegal or dodgy by giving their boxes the ability to tune in ITV HD.
6 - Technically ITV HD is still a freesat exclusive as it does not appear on the Sky EPG.
7 - If ITV wanted ITV HD to be a real freesat exclusive, they would have had to encrypt the transmission.

So... ITV HD is not on SKY. It is possible though to tune it in on a Sky receiver and added to Other Channels. The same can be said of Sky News or Luxe TV HD. Neither of those are on freesat, but can be added in to Non Freesat channels.

I fail to see what the issue is. Oh I have freesat HD.

    Exactly!

I have Freesat HD too and I'm delighted that it's happened.

I have been following the disscussion on DS and AV Forums over the past couple of days about it, **The mind boggles**.

Anyone notice that the Liverpool games was the 1st time there was no Sound dropouts and the picture imo was the best it has ever been.

Maybe a bit of a negotiation has gone on, Amazing what sky upload facilities can fix.

    In return for a favour.
