A Brazilian archbishop says all those who helped a child rape victim secure an abortion are to be excommunicated from the Catholic Church.

The Catholic Church tried to intervene to prevent the abortion going ahead but the procedure was carried out on Wednesday.

Now a Church spokesman says all those involved, including the child's mother and the doctors, are to be excommunicated.
However, doctors at the hospital said they had to take account of the welfare of the girl, and that she was so small that her uterus did not have the ability to contain one child let alone two.

I'm not religous but crap like that would really put me off the idea of catholicism.

What about you lot boardsies, any other actions by the church annoy the bejaysus out of you?

Meh it's their ball. They can do what they like with it. Excommunication I have no problem with.

It's the bit where they tried to intervene and stop the abortion that sickens me.

We could be here all day. A bunch of hypocritical money-hungry bigots. More obsessed with people's private lives and protecting their own than genuine human suffering and poverty. They would rather see people die of aids than wear contraception.

raping children and denying it & just moving the offenders out to unknowing new fertile grounds where they could continue their filth.

Tolerance of child abuse and the hushing up of it, and the outrage by altar rail lickers towards people that are brave enough to come forward.

I suppose systematicaly abusing young children gets on my nerves a wee bit.

Yep. The list of things wrong is too big, serious and huge for AH section.

Short story is: we refused to inflict the heavy anchor of the totally corrupt Rome organisation on our kids.

And what's the bet that the rapist daddy is a priest from said church?

The catholic church is anti abortion - no exception. Punishing members who knowingly contravene this... well technically there's nothing wrong with that seeing as the church is simply adhering to doctrine.

What pisses me off is people who continue to support the catholic church, moreso than the catholic church itself.

haha a funny one I hate; the fact that if you for some strange reason, want to get married; in a church.. you have to do a "wedding course"

So Church; you are telling me that a man sworn to celibacy - something completely against nature - who believes in some seriously strange things and spends most of his time with other celibates and young (alter) boys is the correct person to give me a course on how I spend my married life with a woman?

nooooooo no no no you've got it all wrong - you should be asking ME how to get on with life normally.

If you're excommunicated, it's like them putting up a "No Homers" sign and not letting you into their club, i.e. it's completely an utterly meaningless.

What annoys me is people who consider excommunication to be anything more serious than someone saying, "You can't be in our gang anymore".

While this is an extreme case, i can see their point. For many catholics, paticularly in the poorer parts of the world, abortion is murder, plain and simple. There is no moral grey area, it's all black and white.

The question for them is "why should an innocent unborn child be murdered for something it has no part of" and from that point of view i can see why they'd excommunicate the people involved.
If you break their rules you don't get to be in the club anymore.

While i personally think the abortion was the correct move, getting upset when a religion enforces it's own rules is a bit silly.

(also - in before some bonehead brings up Sharia and beheadings)

The church, pfft! Opec are saints compared to these scum. Very wealthy organisation, with little regard for the needy. Saying this, a lot of individuals in the church are very very good people, getting little or no funding from the church itself but yet these people are able to run great charitable organisations.

The church sickens me... Religion sickens me... Religion will be the demise of civilisation on this planet. It will be the ruin of the world...

I can't. The doctors said that she wouldn't be physically able to have the child, let alone two. In that situation there is only ever one choice.

I really feel you're right. It causes so much suffering.

Well who told the church exactly? Did the brazillian bishop seek help from the church? It happens all the time in Ireland and England with no excommunications from the church, is it only certain cases that this happens?

Theoretically, the fundamental principles of religion is great, treating human kind with respect and what not, but in practice it only works for said religion. In order for it to truly work there would have to be one religion, which simply will never happen. Religion has fueled massive wars for as long as it is around, it makes it "ok" to destroy another life. Utter hypocricy...

You realise the problem isn't religion, right?

It's people. or more specifically people using religion as an means to further their own ambitions. And when it isn't religion it's something else, like national security or other differing political ideologies.

Blaming 'religion' for the worlds woes is like blaming a gun for shooting someone.

Religion Guns should be banned because people can't be trusted with them.

I knew i shouldn't have used the gun comparison.........

    Fine, how about:
Blaming 'religion' for the worlds woes is like blaming an inanimate object for the actions of a person.

    Is it unambiguous enough now?

I wonder how much of the current budget deficit we could make up if we stripped the church of all their lands.....

    100% correct.

This is why I hold the organisation responsible as a whole.

Confiscating church assets to make up for a shortfall in the country's finances..... now where have I heard that before?
