I don't think it is appropriate to mock this happening where someone has just died. RIP.

Funny I am flying in 6 days and always before I go something like this happens so now I shall have to subject myself to "Seconds from Disaster" or "Air Crash Investigation" on Sky to reassure myself of flyings safety, also Catholic Confession (to be sure I go straight up in the event of anything going wrong) plus other general fear of flying type stuff. I am flying Ryanair this time who I believe never oil their planes one end of the year to another but somehow they haven't had a major mishap yet.

There were no deaths in the crash, according to Turkey's Transport Minister Binali Yildirim and Turkish Airlines chief executive Temel Kotil.

One person was earlier reported to have died and at least 20 others hurt.

Around the wings I believe. You'll either be the first to go up in a big fire ball, or the first out of the door on a successful landing. Also it's the strongest part of the fuselage as it's got to support the wings as well, the splits in that Turkish 738 are nowhere near the wings.

Although the rear of the plane does always land first, if it's a crash landing then it could be any part to hit the ground first. If the rear comes down first then your probably landing OK.

the engines are filled with oil every night.
the flaps, slats, landing gear,jack screw etc are lubricated periodically ie evey 60 days or an amount of flight hours or flight cycles.airlines must abide by these time constraints which are set out in the maintenance planning document by boeing and negligence in this regard is a breach of aviation law.

This probably isn't the place for a serious question, but does anyone know what the usual deal is, when plane crashes like this happen? Do they close the airport, or are flights resumed in a few hours?
