Well, hopefully that's all the plane crashes out of the way, cause I'm going there tomorrow.

I hear the plane was stocked up with some prototype bars of Turkish Misery, the succesor to Turkish Delight.

I don't think it is appropriate to mock this happening where someone has just died. RIP.

Funny I am flying in 6 days and always before I go something like this happens so now I shall have to subject myself to "Seconds from Disaster" or "Air Crash Investigation" on Sky to reassure myself of flyings safety, also Catholic Confession (to be sure I go straight up in the event of anything going wrong) plus other general fear of flying type stuff. I am flying Ryanair this time who I believe never oil their planes one end of the year to another but somehow they haven't had a major mishap yet.

Yes the fact being that there were no deaths, and it is ok to resume humour on this thread.

Sit at the back of the plane.
It's less likely that a plane will reverse into a mountain.

    NO DEATHS

There were no deaths in the crash, according to Turkey's Transport Minister Binali Yildirim and Turkish Airlines chief executive Temel Kotil.

One person was earlier reported to have died and at least 20 others hurt.

I wonder where is, statistically, the safest place to sit on a plane...
I would imagine that sitting IN the plane would be marginally safer then sitting ON the plane. :)

but if the Pilot was attempting an emergency/crash landing the back would be the first to hit the ground (i think)...

Around the wings I believe. You'll either be the first to go up in a big fire ball, or the first out of the door on a successful landing. Also it's the strongest part of the fuselage as it's got to support the wings as well, the splits in that Turkish 738 are nowhere near the wings.

Although the rear of the plane does always land first, if it's a crash landing then it could be any part to hit the ground first. If the rear comes down first then your probably landing OK.

BBC now reporting that some different Dutch reports are saying either 5 or 7 deaths, possibly involving the flight crew.

    scurrilous accusation.
the engines are filled with oil every night.
the flaps, slats, landing gear, jack screw etc are lubricated periodically ie evey 60 days or an amount of flight hours or flight cycles.airlines must abide by these time constraints which are set out in the maintenance planning document by boeing and negligence in this regard is a breach of aviation law.

    Anyone for a Turkish de-f-light?!

This probably isn't the place for a serious question, but does anyone know what the usual deal is, when plane crashes like this happen? Do they close the airport, or are flights resumed in a few hours?

Most EU flights are cancelled for now AFAIK, don't know how long that will be though!

Schiphol is closed at the moment. if it were any other airport in Holland i am sure it would stay closed. But Schiphol will be opened fast enough again. it is the 3rd or 4th biggest airport in Europe, they will not leave that closed for a long time.

id say it will be closed for a while.
the emergency services are pre-occupied with this crash and therefore there is no emergency services available at the airport should a further incident occur.
also schipol is a fairly busy airport and the air traffic controllers will be pre occupied with landing/diverting all the aircraft which had been holding in the air awaiting clearance to land.
they also do not know if the airport or surroundings had any influence on the crash ie the ils system, weather ie windshear conditions, birdstrikes, lightening or terrorism

id say it will re open tonight

possible that he ran out of fuel. there was no fire. although no reports he declared a fuel related emergency

he came 500 meters short of the runway. I doubt that that has to do with fuel. I am no expert but it more looks like a too slow speed while landing.

All flights were suspended, but the airport has since re-opened.

You're taking a terrible risk mentioning flaps, slats, screws, and periodic lubrication in AH, you know.

If the next reported number of dead is 14 then I'll win the office sweep.
