You'd have soup when you're hungry, not thirsty, so you eat it like all other foods!

So why did you start that statement with "You'd have soup..." :p

At least I didn't start it with "You'd drink soup..." :)

that depends on whether it's a soupful or just a soup!

As far as I know soup is a food and you eat it. When I want to eat a yogurt quickly I just take off the lid and "drink" it straight, however I still see this as eating the yogurt and with the exception of YOP I don't think anyone would say that they drank yogurt.
Also soup is seen as a course in a meal (I don't think aperitif and digestif count as courses, sorry if I spelt those incorrectly)

It was fun telling a Finn and German that you eat soup, I can't remember what it was in their languages, but they wouldn't believe me that its eat and not drink in english :D

edit: anyone make cuppa soup in a bowl ? Its one of those things I wonder why I don't do it

In finnish they pronounce every letter in a word, it always cracked me up to hear them advertise Knorr (Canorr) soup.
Not sure why I brought that up, but then I have been drinking and hit the thanks button instead of the quote button, then realised I agreed and just left it.

We're all goin to heaven lads whaayyyyy

I inject soup intravenously, saves me the confusion of whether to eat or drink it.

    Soup is always eaten.

Its also bad form to tilt the bowl towards you to spoon out the last of the soup, good manners dictate that the bowl should always be tilted away from you.

But the end of the soup is the hardest to get to:( If you use a table spoon then it is proberly too big to take the last drops of it and if you use a teaspoon it will take forever to finish. Tilting the bowl is the only proper way the finish your soup entirely because spoons tend to leave leftovers, and we can't allow those leftover to go to waste, there's children starving in the world.

Although you could use a straw but that's just as bad as tilting

I've always said that you eat soup. Soup to me is a food, even if it is liquid, and you always eat food. Plus, if you were thirsty, you wouldn't drink soup to quench a thirst, you'd have it if you were hungry

You use neither a table spoon nor a teaspoon to eat your soup. You use a soupspoon!

Tilting is acceptable as long as you tilt away from you.
Tilting towards is as unmannerly as licking your knife.

Although, who really cares these days?

Agreed, you have soup for Lunch and as an Appetizer. You wouldn't have Coca Cola for Lunch or as a starter and that's a liquid as well. If you have something as a meal then it should be considered eating.
