It depends if it's lumpy or not. Soup is still a liquid...

I eat soup. Even the most watery of soups has bits you have to chew.

    You need a new blender.
    A strainer too.
    Then you will find,
there is no need to chew.

Jesus, your soup only has water in it? you poor fella, has the recession been that bad for you?

We could have a whip round for a couple of cup-a-soups:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,513 ✭✭✭Sleipnir

You drink water. Everything else is food.

Yes but you dont eat things out of cups. In college they give you soup in a coffee cup, i know people who sip it out of the little hole in the plastic top. To me thats drinking it

Pretty damn pointless without a poll ...

Personally, I eat my lunch/dinner, but would not consider "soup" to be lunch/dinner coz I don't "eat" it

Therefore, by default, I "drink" it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,124 ✭✭✭chasm

    I "eat" soup,with a spoon, from a bowl. A cup/mug is so common!

IT can be hard trying to drink sea food chowder without chewing ie eating :D

i would take the lid off and get a spoon. i often eat things from cups

Thats not the point. I take the lid of and eat it with a spoon. But for those who dont, and sip it through the lid, i would consider that drinking.

I hope we are still talking about soup :confused::D

    You drink soup!!

If I can't drink it through a straw, it's food, not liquid.

Assumptions, the mother of all fcukups...

I asked if you chewed water.

Soup is drinkable, like you would with any other liquid. It may have more nutrition in it than most liquids but it is still a liquid. Some soups you will eat as there can be solids in it also. So it's not "simple as"...

yes I agree you have to eat seafood chowder but im talking about "in conversation" and what is the correct way to say it. Come English students out there!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,800 ✭✭✭Senna

Its eat, would you use a straw to eat soup? but you could use a straw for anything you drink.
Cant believe how many people think the term is drink for soup. You may eat it out of a cup, you may not use a spoon and you may put it through a strainer but for all intensive purposes you eat soup.

Like most of the big questions in life, its a grey area. Kind of like that fact that the "three phases of matter" you get taught about in science are not extremely distinct, rather they blend into each other. You see, you need to remember that the world as it is before us is not there for our ease of classification. The universe dosent care about boundries, only our evolved brain does.

You drink soup by the way

    Souper topic!

Well, maybe I'm just weird but if I'm referring to soup in a colloquial manner insofar as I'm not talking about any kind of specific sort, then I would simply say "have soup" rather than eat or drink... leaves it open.

..although personally, I'm in the "eat" camp.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 734 ✭✭✭builttospill

I drink it with a fork. From a plate.
