Agger is the only centre back we have thats comfortable bringing the ball out to midfield and beyond if necessary. Very much in the mould of previous legends that have played centre back for us..........neither carra or skyrtel do this nor have the ability to do it. They have other virtues.

Agger leaving us would be a huge step back imo..........(i wanted to say he should be ahead of carra now but i fear there is distain and hatred on the horizon for me should i even suggest carra was moved wide or dropped). Essentially, i think most fans would like carra to play untill he physically cannot walk................loyalty is commendable but as far as im concerned the club are walking a tightrope regarding agger and the player is very much entitled to look for a new employer should he wish to do so.

The thoughts of people on here suggesting that agger should be told that hyypia and carra are in their final blows and to be patient is schoolboy stuff tbh............in the big bad world of football, it is my opinion the talent should supercede age...........im not saying carra and hyypia are not worthy of the shirt, im merely stating that we are at risk of losing one of the best centre backs of the next 10 years in european football through dithering and incompetence...........unfortunately, my crystal ball isnt working and the future is unclear but the shambles that is the 3 stoogees upstairs could quite easily leave it way too late and agger could have pre contract talks with any club on the 1st of july should he want a move.

5 months is not a long time.........the contract should be sorted out asap or we will receive pennies for a player who is the most talented defender at the club imo.

Changing defence during a game, for the sake of giving a player game time, is a very dangerous thing to do, imo.

An interesting aside on Liverpool hitting the woodwork in games.
Not really a table you want to be top off though.
    WOODWORK LESSON
Thanks for your good work. This is a page that I always look forward to since I love statistics and I think they are very significant in football. I was talking with my friends recently and we were discussing the role of luck in football. I believe that Liverpool hit the woodwork 21 times this season in the Premier League. Am I right to believe that this is the highest number in the Premier league this season? Mario Aquilina.

MARTIN SAYS: I'm glad you appreciate the column, Mario, and I'm happy to be able to tell you - with a bit of help from our friends at Opta - that you are both right and wrong about Liverpool. The Reds have hit the woodwork more than any other Premier League side this season, but they have done so 18 times, not 21. Here's a full list...

    Team Hit woodwork

    Liverpool 18
    Portsmouth 14
    Arsenal 13
    West Ham 13
    Aston Villa 12
    Everton 12
    Newcastle 12
    Chelsea 11
    Blackburn 10
    Bolton 10
    Sunderland 10
    Man Utd 10
    West Brom 10
    Man City 8
    Middlesbrough 8
    Hull 7
    Tottenham 7
    Stoke 6
    Wigan 6
    Fulham 4

Probably right but if the opportunity came up at say 2-0 up might be worth it for ten minutes against lesser times.

Agreed - unless really called for

IMO - If either Skyrtl, Carragher, Alonso or Mascherano dont play then Agger should be in... This would mean would Agger should see a fair amount of gametime and a friend of mine wouldnt - 2 birds with one stone :)

So, instead of not playing him at all, you want to give him token ten minutes against "lesser" teams?

If any manager started that bullshít with me, I'd tell him to shove it up his hole tbh.

no reason to believe he will in fairness

I think Ryan Babel could put up an argument here

This is in addition to whatever other games he is selected for.
It was coming under the whole increasing his playing time to a maximum.

Probably one of the things I find a bit irritating about Rafa sometimes is the fact that he doesn't seem to use the bench more. However as against that when he does make changes they generally tend to be effective.

Maybe rio is nice but i feel alex or rooney might have had a word ; )

This is the most realistic title challenge in over a decade.

Houlier had Liverpool top with 3 to play in the 2001-02 season.

you never cease to amaze me. You just make things up and almost everything you say is complete and utter nonsense.

Arsenal won the title by 7 points. (Fact)
We were top with 3 games to play (Boggles' claim)

We won our last two games, which makes that claim completely impossible.
In fact we won 9 of our last 10 premier league games, which is the only reason we were so close.
We were never REALLY that close to winning that season.

Beat Ipswich 5-0 to overtake United on the last day, so top with 3 to play and Arsenal winning by 7 is impossible.

They would have to lose their last 3 games for Arsenal to win by 7.

I never said Arsenal had 3 to play.

They had 2 games in hand and had to play United and Everton in there last 2 matches, and 2 points behind Liverpool.

If Liverpool got that close this season would you not take it?

YEP, basically if we are 2 points ahead of United and they've 2 games in hand, yes.

A CL Semi or Final would be good too, that would be better than 01/02.

Boggles, what the heck are you talking about? Liverpool were never close to winning the title that season. Yes, we finished 2nd. But it wasn't like we were battling Arsenal for the title. In fact, we were battling Utd for second spot. There never was a title challenge from us that season.
The closest we ever came to winning the Premiership was around 97 under Roy Evans. I recall it was the Easter weekend where if we had beaten Coventry at home, we'd go top. I genuinely thought that if we won that day that we would hang on to top spot. God put us ahead midway through the second half but Dublin scored two late goals thanks to David James f&cking up. I remember feeling so gutted that day. That is the most genuine title challenge we have put up since Arsenal won the league in 91.

I think what you meant to say there was, "Houllier had Liverpool in 2nd place, 4 points behind Arsenal, with 3 to play in the 2001/2002 season"?

I mean, you did check your facts and so on before throwing that statement out there. Right?

Don't give us that horse manure about Arsenal having 2 games in hand. It makes your argument pointless. Liverpool being top with 3 to play is pointless if anyone within overtaking distance has more games to play than the 3 you talk about. Christ give us patience!

One could also argue that Thommo has a lot more to do with our league position in 01/02 than Houlier did as Thommo was the one calling the shots for the better part of that season (Oct -> Mar/Apr iirc)

YEP, Was going to say that. Interestingly a star striker was sold that year too mid season!

In fairness, he was responding to "a best League campaign in 18/19 years" comment, not a Houllier V. Rafa one!
