    Just curious
I notice in other threads people talking about what makes them proud to be irish ,patriotism etc.Giving the current situation and the shower in government.
If we were invaded tomorrow .Would you ?

(A)Put your life on the line to fight the invader as other irishmen have in our past.
    OR
(B)Welcome them with open arms and say bugger ireland

Many other countries still pride themselves on been willing to fight and die for their country.Apart from the obvious ,family, friends, self ,etc. What in Ireland would you fight and die for.

Well I'm in the Defence Forces, I'd rather live and contribute to my country.

Would I die for it, well I'd fight for it and for our citizens absolutely no shadow of a doubt in my mind that I would.

I'd say I was joining the army to look all cool and heroic, then go "oh hold on, I have to tie my shoelace first" and by the time I was finished that we'd have lost already.

Reading alot of the comments here reminded me of one of yeats' poems.. not that I'm calling any of yous selfish, money hungry ppl :pac: it just reminded me of it...

just replace pray with drink :pac:

what need you, being come to sense,
But fumble in a greasy till
And add the halfpence to the pence
And prayer to shivering prayer, until
    You have dried the marrow from the bone;
For men were born to pray and save:
    Romantic Ireland’s dead and gone,
It’s with O’Leary in the grave.

I'll make a compromise - I promise to die in Ireland. Will that do?

The chances of any normal member of the DF being in a situation to take a bullet for Biffo is slim to none.

If you mean would a member of the DF take a bullet while Biffo is Taoiseach well then yes, I would.

Does that mean I'm dying for my country or a traitor!.

All of the above is a joke, I love my Taoiseach.

I don't really but had to say that to cover myself

The President is head of State so technically if there was any dying to be done it would be for her.

The Taoiseach is the guy who decides how much of a wage is acceptable to die for your President.

I dunno you never can tell ,the way things are going he might actually have to call out the army to protect him?.

Just to take this to a serious note.

I love this "I would in my ****e die for Ireland". When invaders come, they don't come to topple your government and create a utopia. They come to rape your country of every resource and ounce of wealth it can, and then continue to do so until exhausted. Or how about they come to your country, and want to impose their own morals, religions, ethics etc., and make sure you abide by them. If (or when :D) the middle eastern crazies get their way, you'll all be dying for Ireland, because you were born infidels and that is what you'll always be to them. So rise to your arms, you'll be dying for Ireland anyway :pac::D

Yeah but it wouldn't be a normal member of the DF doing Close Protection for Biffo.

Bullsh1t, its more than a case of "your simply born here", the people around you molded your character, your way of thinking, basically who you are . You were raised as an Irish person, and you'd probably be a much different person if you were raised in Japan or America or wherever.

Of course you'd be a different person if you were raised in America or Japan as you would be growing up in a different culture. Now if an American person or Japanese person moves to Ireland and gets Irish citizenship then they can be proud of becoming Irish as they became Irish through their own choice. Unlike you and I who were born here and had no choice in the matter.

Id defend my country and be willing to die for it, just because our government is a mess doesnt mean its worth abandoning our people as a culture or nation.
Im shocked with the amount of people saying not a chance.
The funny thing is Im not even a nationalist and was never into the RA etc, I even voted yes for the lisbon treaty.

Dieing for ones country always seemed a waste to me. I know that it was popular for generations to talk about killing the English and repelling their advance on our culture but if it was'nt for them invading us wasy back when then chances are we would be far less advanced than we are now, so in retrospect maybe we should just welcome any would be invaders rather than sending 16 and 17 year old kids to die for an ideal which no longer exists.

Not worth dying for but it would be nice to have him for the qualifiers.

Trapattoni said he'd take him back if he went through the right channels.

Not necessarily, maybe we would have been given a chance to develop the country ourselves. Not to mention being involved in the EU. You dont have to be an ex colony to have advances in your country.

so in retrospect maybe we should just welcome any would be invaders rather than sending 16 and 17 year old kids to die for an ideal which no longer exists.

I have to disagree, Im not talking about an 'ideal' as such. Just the way I see it is , a country invading us means they are imposing their way of life on us. It could also mean they will oppress us, preventing that is what Id die for.
