Great men died for our country why even think of giving it away. :pac:

They must be very pissed off men in their graves now looking at how we've ran the place since.
Our leaders greatest overall achievement seems to have been to force our brightest to emigrate since the foundation of the state.

+ 1 The only thing now our government can do now is hit out at parents and children! Talk about having the lowest of the low in power!

Simple answer NO! If we were part of the UK we'd be like Wales and Scotland were til recently completely left out with noone to look after their interests. I know devolution there is hardly perfect yet but they have control over their own interests at least. England will look after England always and only.

Besides these arguments are pointless we're already a member of a large group of states and as such are cushioned to some degree from economic downturn. We're not truely independant as we're governed to some degree by the EU and we get money from there which to be perfectly honest we should all be happy and thankful for.
The illusion some people hold and perpetuate of Irish independence and neutrallity will fade in time.

I'd rather live in a country where people talk to each other thank you very much. The UK culture seems very individualistic and alienated to me.

I think your question really ought to be "Would you be better off being part of UK?"

You say yes, I say no.

Money should not be considered the sole purpose for doing anything. Should we get rid of all the arts faculties in universities because they do not train people to make lots of money? Besides, this "bread on the table" argument is a blatant lie. Few people in Ireland and the UK have serious problems in putting bread on the table. I think a more honest phrase would be "Gaeilge doesn't put a Ferrari in the driveway".

Politically it would be disastrous to rejoin the Kingdom. Britain's population outnumbers us twentyfold. We would have virtually no say in London.

I've been thinking about this since I've worked in the UK and had a very positive experience there (89 -98). Personally I found in a larger population people mind their own business more. At that time us Irish noticed a difference in the cost of living, the tax was lower, the car tax was lower at that time and car insurance was cheaper due to the fact there were no huge sums of money paid out in compensation claims, amounts seemed to be capped in relation to particular injuries, don't know if thats still the case.
In my opinion, I felt fortunate to be English speaking when I see the effort it takes for others to learn English. Its difficult enough to travel and find work in another country without having to learn the language, so in my opinion again I'm glad I'm English speaking. It opens up more opportunities for people to work in other countries when they are English speaking, I think we take it for granted. In the big world outside Ireland, Gaeilge doesn't put bread on the table.
Now we are travelling up North to do even the supermarket in the present time and we are told we are unpatriotic. It still pays to import cars from the UK.
Why am I living here then? Well my partners job is here so I had to make a decision and yes I'd go back in the morning if I got the opportunity. This of course was my experience only, that and the frantic Celtic tiger which seems to have changed to a whimpering kitten. Don't know how many of you worked abroad and could see the differences when you returned?
Society in the UK is gone to pot, crime, overpopulation asylum seekers. We,re better off on our own.

what make anyone think that the UK would even consider taking back Ireland

Ireland is in a really bad state as we all know much worst then the UK at the moment. the fact that we are even bringing up this topic is a sign of panic.
    and lazy thinking.

what we need now is get our house in order
restructure the state. even if that means brick by brick
stop voting in dynastic politicians teachers and publicans as our tds

and stop thinking as the UK as savors

    Here's a possible solution, i admit it's a long shot.
How about we elect Caring and Intelligent people into Goverment?
The self serving idiots way didn't work.

This country isn't as far gone down that road as the UK, in my opinion. I don't like the way that if you ask someone a question or make some casual humour on the street/bus whatever, most Irish strangers will reply in kind. Most English strangers will just stare blankly.

Listen you spa, we're already in the EU. The UK is a thing of the past and their eurosceptic population will leave them lagging behind when this crisis is over. Nobody said they wanted to be in the UK except for the braindead OP.

    **** the United Kingdom.

    Europe agus Ireland go bragh.

True it will be a sad day when we give up our currency, the right to adjust our interest rates, the ability to offer financial help to Irish companies, have our laws made in another European country... oh!! :pac: :D

It was a sad day when Irish Banks were in total control, 13% intrest was considered the norm, perhaps even low.The average 20K Mortgage had a 1K administration fee.
FFS imagine a 20% fee on a 13% 350K Mortgage. That didn't include the 19% Bridging loan that had to be paid until the house was fuly finished or handed over.:(

Would Britain be better off being part of France? The French economy is doing much better. Would Mexico be better off being part of the US?

Kind of a silly question. Of course we wouldn't.

I'm not a fan of the 1916 headers and would've preferred a more graduated independence (we made a dog's dinner of it, in fairness - leaving the education system to the Church etc.).

But the UK isn't what we are. Apart from the obvious things like culture, the UK is too much of a nanny state. Imagine what they'd do with hurling! Hi-viz vests, body armour and tennis balls for sliotars! Not to mention high council taxes, warm beer and an over-riding "British = English" ethos.

No thanks p.s. love their TV though!

Car tax and insurance might be cheaper now but in a few years they will have mandatory GPS tracking devices fitted in everyone's car so you pay by the mile.

and this guy will know where your car is at any time.

the brits are ridiculously paranoid and reserved. its nearly impossible to get to know people around here. like in ireland when theres floods there will be people standing by the road having a chat and i could just walk up and join them for a floodgazing session but if I tried that in england they'd be like "who are you?" and "you come to the wrong ****ing place mate".

its grand for a while if you are an anti-social **** who lives in dublin and seems to despise everything that causes you the slightest inconvenience but then it gets annoying.

its not like people mind their own business. it might seem that way but really they are checking out if you have too many phones and if you could be a Terrorist. After all the Irish have been notorious terrorists over here for the past few decades.
