If I wasn't paying 160 a year, for the privilege of not watching RTE, I wouldn't care how much their top earners are getting. Market forces are clearly not determining their salaries, so what is?

I really do think that there's a case here for a boycott...

...not of RTE, they couldn't give a stuff, but of RTE's major sponsors' products and a petition to the Directors of said companies and to the RTE Director General outlining the same.

Now all we need is a list of RTE's ten biggest advertisers and a catchy name for the campaign.

In 1999 the following were the top:

    1. Telecom Eireann 2. Unilever 3. Quinnsworth ltd 4. The National Lottery 5. Bank of Ireland 6. Sony Ltd 7. Irish Permanent 8. Dunnes Stores 9. Warners Bros Ltd 10. Nestle Ireland Ltd 11. First National 12. Allied Irish Banks 13. Ryans Tourist Group 14. Independent Newspapers 15. Virgin Records 16. Guinness Ireland Group 17. General Motors 18. Whitehall Laboratories 19. Kerry Co-op Creameries 20. Cadbury Ireland plc.

That was ten tears ago! I wonder how that has changed?

Can't believe you included Micheal O'Muircheartaigh in that list - he might be senior but he's still doing as much work as he ever did, probably more, since RTE cover more live games now than they did 10/20/30 years ago. He's also one of the greatest commentators on GAA ever, professional, entertaining, informative and a mine of information. And I bet he doesn't get a fraction of what Gerry Ryan gets.
Ger Canning on the other hand, argghhhhh what a muppet!

Mmmmm..... maybe went a little OTT here Zed..in terms of money O'Muirceartaig probably dosn't rate.. but in a way this validates my point that RTE spend money in the wrong areas and don't sufficiently "sweat" their stars.

Take your point buddy..was out of line putting O'M in that group.

fair play to dumphy, and shame on the rest of them "we don't need to take a pay cut" Ah sure they only make hundreds of thousands a year, I have no respect for RTE and it's higher paid employees...

Should do more than "having no respect" what they are doing is very blatently wrong...almost a scandal I would say..feel the current straitened economic times will flush a few of these questionable practices out.

If gerry ryan etc can justify the huge salaries because of the revenue they get from advertising, then WTF is there a need for a TV licence of €150, and on rtes own site it says 99% of household have a TV.

Mark Cagney on TV3 in the mornings has been going on about it more recently, since viewers often ring in mistakenly thinking TV3 get licence money too. Cagney was saying something like "they try to justify it by saying it is what the market demands/pays", but then made the good point, well sack them and see who else will pay them that much.

It really sickens me paying for these assholes, if they are so good then scrap the licence fee and just let people subscribe like any other service. They are scared sh!tless to do this since they know most would not want it. Why not just increase the licence fee to €500 and legally oblige people who own TVs to pay for sky sports, sky movies, setanta and hardcore porn. Sure if you don't want it you can just turn it off.

What I would like to see is someone stand up on the late late on one of the many discussions they've had about the recession and it to Pat to justify his massive salary. The fact is that these people get paid an awful lot of money for what appears to be a very simple job. I mean come on they really are taking the p**s. There is no other organisation in the country that would pay that kind of money to these fools (except maybe the banks!). Sack them all I say and give some young people a chance... who knows they might even be entertaining which would be an added bonus! (but seriously though a 50% pay cut is in order here for these stars)

Oh and where can I get Late Late tickets?

That would be interesting. Anybody have stats?

I'd say BOI, AIB and the Lottery are still high. Guinness would be higher due to GAA sponsorship.

Can't see Sony being so high or Ryans or Virgin!

So i wonder what effect Gerry Ryan's comments will have on his listenership?

Ironic thing is if his figures went down as a result of him saying he's taking no pay cut and his show lost advertisment power as a result then he will be the architect of his own pay cut by default.

Or maybe the people paying his wages will realise they dont need the baggy-throated,bug-eyed fat slug anymore than we,as a nation need genital warts.

Irish apathy and a lack of outrage?

That, and people ,yes thats us , who with a few exceptions mind you;),actually gave little thought to this scandal as long as WE were doing all right!!

We ignored a little sty of well fed swine out in Montrose with their fat snouts buried deep in the public trough.Buried deep and constantly. It's only now when the pickings are diminishing on the dunghill that we notice these porcine creatures waddling around.

As I learned on my MBA course,it's relatively easy to manage in a crisis, the real talent is managing expectations in a boom.

And did we succeed at that???

    Did we fcuk:mad::mad::mad::mad:

Im loving how everyone is taking out their anger at Gerry Ryan for no real reason. Im late to this debate but I dont remember GR saying he wouldnt take a pay cut but that there were no paycuts in RTE. Read the article in the Sun which was pretty much falsified as per usual.

According to a Sunday Independent poll 87% of people believe that RTE "stars" should take a pay cut. The worm is definitely turning,

For the first time in a long, long time I will be tuning into The Gerry Ryan Show tomorrow. Lets hear him " bull****" his way out of this one.

Well to be honest, if everyone is going to get the chop - everyone except the public sector workers who will remain untouched according to the latest reports (union power!) - then they can play a part too.

TV3 are entitled to license money too.
all they have to do is make some programs instead of whining about it
TG4 do this all the time

Gerry Ryan should be given a notice in writing that his position as a broadcaster is dependent on him broadcasting. If he misses more days they give the show to someone else.

The thing that enrages most about the license fee is that they didn't bankrupt Beverly.

Amazing to think that the "stars" on the cover of christmas edition of the RTE guide are probably getting over 10% of TG4's budget.

If you read Gerry Ryan's book(i dont reccomend paying ofr it),you'll see he belongs to a different era.He still has his head up his arse and is stuck sometime around 2003.
He "celebrates" property developers,he fetes Fianna Fail as being the only thing the country ever got right,he exults in wasting money on over-the-top luxuries eg 2000 euro bottles of wine,1000 euro a night hotels, first class travel and staying in suites, all this bollocks.
Basicaly,if he's employed by the state,he's sending out the wrong message in these times of belt-tightening.
Maybe a taste of hardship might make him throttle back on the bragging and the smugness that runs through the man like a tapeworm.

He's not employed by the state he's self employed, contracted to RTE (as most of them are).

I think you secretly have a horn for Gerry Ryan.

Only joking i agree with you 100% he reminds me of one of the fat slags out of Viz magazine.

If he's contracted to RTE and RTE is a state agency then he's paid by the state isnt he?

Either way its a disgusting situation,a patently talentless,self-obsessed boor living off the fat of the land for decades without anybody ever thinking "maybe we could replace this twat and save some money".

I also read in his book that he thinks he has a bit of pull in RTE,he recommended Colm and Jim-Jim to some executive to get them the televisual feast the is the "Home Run".

    And Jesus wept..

I know its been mentioned already but I still can't take in that just one presenter is being paid €850,000 a year basic.
Thats just fcuking mad!!! And he won't take a pay cut! Talk about being a greedy Schite!

RTE has to cut 50 Million from its budget for the next year alone and this nut won't help at all.
I hope to god the boring plank Pat Kenny gets a dose of never ending diarrhea.

    He is the messiah..........

It will be interesting to see the amount of coverage on Kenny, Ryan and Joe Duffy next week about this issue. I can see Kenny now, dismissing the issue as a red herring, then in the same breath telling some poor sap in the HSE who's on 20k to take a 10% paycut!
