That scumbag Gerry Ryan whinges in his book that he doesnt get paid enough. He thinks that 600 grand a year for spouting crappy opinions makes him underpaid.

And you know whats in his book how?

The reason Pat Kenny is so emotionless and totally devoid of charisma is because every night he spends hours unable to sleep, laughing maniacally at how he is where he is. This wears him out for the next 20 hours.

Don't start on the media - overpaid as they are, just yet - folks. The recession isn't even a year old, and we've already used up single mothers, the unemployed, and teachers from our blame quota.

One doesn't want to shoot one's scapegoat load, as it were.

I have a feeling that there is still quite a large "load" left to shoot, even after we "creampie" the media (keeping with the theme).

There's a copy in work we got under copyright.
I read it because i hate him and having read it i hate him thousands of times more.
The reaction to his book was so negative that he apparantly lost 9000 listeners to his radio show.
I've a good mind to read highlights of it out on my own show,to finish off the rest of his listenership.

RTE won't cut any "stars"salaries unless they absolutely forced to do.

Forget about that one boys and girls

    They might well have to.
    Its completely public funded.
they employ too many people in RTE anyway, close the fcuckin place down and we'd miss nothing.

Partly right there Degs, but the lads with the leather elbow pads and open toed sandals and shop in the Merrion Centre have a lot of power and contacts.

They would maintain its partly public funds and partly advertism revenue. Well thats how Gerry Ryan justifies his salary. The fact that this revenue is taking such a big hit in the recession, it follow should that paycuts are inevitable.

But they are all under contract and would have to volunteer. It just, ain't going to happen.

Indeed and a lot of them signed new contracts very recently slipping nicely under the radar.

I think any cuts should apply to behind the scenes senior management too - not just a few token high profile 'celebrities'. Though yes Gerry Ryan, Pat Kenny etc are vastly overpaid in relation to the quality of what they deliver.

What does Joe Duffy get paid? Be an episode from the twilight zone listening to him and his callers whinge about his pay.

here's what the bug-eyed slob says about his salary and i'm quoting:

"I've always been fairly celebratory about what i earn.In fact,i dont earn enough.I think i should earn at least as much as pat kenny.
The radio show brings in a huge amount of 2fm's revenue.Without the money,i think that 2f,if not the entire radio division, would be in very serious difficulties...
...am I that indespensible?I think probably I am."

Not that I like him, but his salary is justified by his listnership (yes he does have one). The revenue he brings in by being one of the flagships of the station allows for them invest in other enterprises. It's also to outprice a competitor.

If you want to whine about RTE salaries, whine about how Gay Byrne got €100k a year for five years not to go to any competitor after retirement... (ahem... allegedly)

In 2006 he earned €367,804. Is that justified? I imagine it's the same now.

It suffices to say,we must as a nation protect the elephant in the room from the Pay-do-Feel's even if it does cost us €560k a year

I just cannot understand how RTE pay Marion Finucane 455k to present two two hour shows a week, for probably 30 weeks in the year.

She is good , no doubt about that, but that stuff just beggars belief.

There are some crazy wages out there being paid to planks and boring sods, for the rest though, as long as they continue to genuinely entertain daily and not be hypocritical in nature, as long as they pay their taxes, I bear them no ill will for succeeding in their given areas.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,200 ✭✭✭muppetkiller

Now I'm glad I don't pay my tv licence...Scandalous salaries.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,034 ✭✭✭deadhead13

I'm just repeating what I said on another thread........I diagree. The radio station and the timeslot is more important than the presenter. 9-12 on 2fm would be a huge revenue earner anyway. How much Gerry Ryan adds to this is debatalbe.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 16,397 ✭✭✭✭Degsy

Dont forget,RTE has been trying to sneak Gerry Ryan onto the TV for years. Now it seems they've suceeded with that load of crap Ryan Confidential which is on its 5th series.
It absolutley sickens me the way the talent pool appears to be so small in a country of 3.5 million people that this disgusting slob is payed to drool and slobber on national television.

    Can the government sell RTE?

but include a clause in the sale contract that they must continue to offer a certain amount of documentries, news, poitical stuff etc. Fair city, turbirdy, ryan and the rest of the brainless sh1te can go.
The new owner can hire and fire as they see fit.

Im always flabberghast about the RTE wages, I really am. What I dont get is that they work in a market economy where their wages should be decided by the demand for them yet market forces don't seem to occur for our so called 'stars'.
Like what demand is there from RTE's competitors for Gerry Ryan? What media outlet in this country would be willing to pay him €600,000? None I'd guess so therefore he is not worth it and is grossly overpaid for the crap he spouts off. Let him go to the UK and see if anyone over there thinks he is worth €600,000. I doubt it, he's a total unknown over there and on the continent.

There are loads of mouthy graduates of media courses who could do the job a lot better and would love a bash at his job but will never get the chance. Presenters and people who want to be 'famous' are two a penny. As soon as they start making crazy wage demands based on their listenership figures they should be dumped and replaced, theres no lack of people to replace them with. No one person is bigger than the organisation and that is how Ryan behaves with his comments on how indispensable he is.

Don't like him myself, to put it mildly, but plainly hundreds of thousands do. That's why he gets the wedge he gets, to stop him hopping ship. He is a mouthy unfunny boor though. Used to listen to him just to get annoyed!! I know....

    Hopping ship to where exactly............??

I don't know of anyone who likes Gerry Ryan, where does he get his listeners from or is it just people in shops or hairdressers who turn on a radio and leave it on 2fm?

    Good point son.
Nobody in thier right mind would hire the fat, obnoxious slob.
If 2fm had some balls they could sack him and replace him with some mouthy twat fresh from college for one tenth of the money.
He might think he's indespensble now but he'd be forgotten in no time flat.
    Remember Carrie Crowley..

Having not even heard of Carrie Crowley, I had to Google, and came up with this line in Wiki, where there is barely a paragraph on her.

"She appears RTÉ Radio 1 every Sunday night, unfortunately"

My point is that a few years back she was on the telly 7 days a week.
They had her presenting about ten shows, being guests on shows, presenting eurovision etc etc.
To RTE she must've seemed pretty irreplacable untill she left and *bang* she'd been forgotten about.
Just like trout-mouth gerry ryan would be.

The fact that that boring plank Kenny gets paid €850,0000 a year is just crazy.
...and he complains about a possible 10% cut!
O' dear, how ever will he be able to afford the price of a loaf!

Dunphy calls for cuts after taking one: http://www.independent.ie/national-news/dunphy-puts-it-up-to-rte-colleagues-with-10pc-paycut-1620416.html

Awww, that's not fair, who else could they get to say things like "reeeeeiight", "sin sceal eile" and "before we all end up in a home for the permenently befuddled" whilst sounding like a petrol lawnmower being pushed up a gravel driveway.

I suppose, you have to give Dunphy credit fo taking a 10% cut. But it does beg the question, wtf was he doing to be paid 300,000 in the first place?

i think they should sack gerry ryan and repllace him with eamonn dunphy

rte would save 330,000 euro a year and we could scrap gerry ryan and be entertained by dunphy and his view on the world as only he sees it

In all fairness, if he had turned up on TV3 the next week on "The Gay Byrne Show" in the same format as the Late Late, they would have probably lost far more in revenue.

People like Pat Kenny getting 850k though...I mean if he was payed half of that I could maybe understand - being the Late Late presenter and all that. I mean if they cut his salary in half it's not like tv3 or a UK station would take him on. He has nowhere else to go.

    Whats all the heat ??

It's simple really - RTE is a COSY CLUBwhere the members of that club get to decide each others salaries.

An a great thing....you can almost never leave the club..honest ! Look at all the "senior" liggers - Fanning / Gogan / OMuirceartaig / O'mahony etc etc.

The thing is it's run by civil service types who are not risk takers and who are fixated by keeping their "stars" ...why?

Because it's easier to pay these people exhorbitant salaries an prop up the listnership figures that to have to recruit young edgy broadcasters and develop them and RISK a dip in listnership.

news for you boys - not really a risk - look at Marty who left the mother ship and sank without a trace.

Ian Dempsey / Ray Darcy did a bit better but the sky didn't fall in...Tubridy replaced Byrne on radio..Kenny replaced......ummm cough splutter.

Its simple these liggers have no where to go on this Island - bite the bullet lads don't be so generous ...hang tight on a few of the contract negotiations and watch the so called stars sweat.

Great time to do it too.....:D
