With approx 60,000 single mothers claming around 1000 per month in rent allowance is it now time to look at this allowance? do the maths 60,000 x 1000 per month x 12 months...........A lot of money.

My sister had a baby 20 years ago and left the family home, she moved into a bedsit and paid her own way. where in the name of fcuk did this (rent allowance) come from. It's costing 600,000000 yes thats 6 hundred million. now that figure is approx,so all the do gooders looking for proof can fcuk right off.

YEP, attack the most vulnerable in society and put them in more poverty, that will sort it out.

You do realise Single Parents are one of the most vulnerable groups in society. The stats show about 50% are below the poverty line.

The reason they get Rent Allowance is because they are unemployed

    Yizz are all mad.
I'd rather have ALL my tax spent on some single mother's fags than on some fat-banker-b*stard-ex-manager's early retirement scheme (Anglo Irish F.Y.I)

Which is what we all do to a much larger extent than on single mothers. how much did that bank cost us all again?

Wouldn't say it's fair to tax anyone working in the public sector differently, 44% is a lot. And do you really think that if someone saw 44% of their wages going to the state to squander, will that really be productive and encourage people to spend more? Not a hope. If I saw 44% of my wages gone I'd do 44% less work.

I do agree with the single mother benefits to an extent though. The problem is there's quite a few decent mothers out there who need it and it would be a real **** one to take it away. But there's a lot of scumbags as well, so unless you can find a way to differentiate between the two then there's a hole in the plan.

So 720million a year to ensure mothers with children aren't made homeless and can have a decent lifestyle and not grow up in a dump?

    waste of money alright.

Seamus Brennan RIP had plans on reforming the system about 5/6 years. Nothing done.

I'd prefer a single parent at home minding the children rather than in a minmum wage, going nowhere job. Leave them to the single layabouts on the dole.

Well, I see it like this.
My "tax-levy" (bullsh*t name by the way) could provide a single mum on welfare with fags for at least two weeks. And I would love if that was the case.

    Now it won't.
Instead it will bail out a stupid bank.

If for say a year the public sector were put on a higher tax rate that would be in place of a pay cut. A pay cut would take years to claw back where as a tax increase could be amended when we get out of this mess.

I also believe we should pay as we can afford. The guys on the top salaries should be taxed at 48%. How on earth can anyone think it's fair that a couple who have saved and worked hard should lose their jobs then lose their home whilst a single mother lives untouched in a nice apartment.

I personally know half a dozen single mothers living in this situation that this mess will not effect.

And just to throw the cat amonst the pidegons. All the far eastern workers here on short term visas ( pakistanis, indian chinese etc) should be asked to leave, this would free up 1000s of jobs in petrol stations, spar's etc.

This country is on the brink of total collapse, we need drastic action.

Welcome these folks back when we get on our feet but for now we need to make nasty hard decisions
Yes, of course, the destruction of free market economics in favour of protectionism and embracing sectarian communism will save us!

Ok don't take the money form the Single mothers allowance , have them name the Father take it off him , Seems only fair that he should have some resposiblity towards these ppl , it takes two to tango , so some of the allowance should come from them , Saving tax payers money, And the Single mothers do not loose out

That is the current system. It would help if they bloody enforced it.

On the other side of it some fathers are fleeced paying Mortgages and massive Maintenance due to outdated Divorce laws.

    Lets look at some numbers.

Single mothers - the poorest group in society. € 7.2 m.

Dept of Agriculture underestimate of one grant scheme for farmers : € 400 million (55 times more).

Eh, where are you getting 7.2m from? Your ass?

There is a maintenance recovery section but it seems to be a joke. They wrote to me 3/4 years ago and I never bothered replying. Haven't heard from them since.

I pay by court order anyway but it does annoy me that many seem to get away with paying nothing and others are completely fleeced.

It never ceases to amaze me how some people think that by punishing societies most at risk (including single mothers) we can fix our problems.

The reason I mentioned P/S C/C is to apease all those right wing cnunts on Vincent brownes programme each night crying about pensions etc etc in the p/s.

At least the tax rate could be reversed quickly in the future, A pay cut on the other hand would take years to claw back.
years? It would never be clawed back.
What pisses me off is that everyday I see money being thrown at stuff in here, huge expense accounts etc.
Why not address the rampant over spending in senior and middle management instead of a blanket cut or tax increase, as usual it will be joe soap on the lower rungs that will be pushed to the wall, instead of the stuffed shirts.

Very easy to target single mothers and tar them all with the same brush isn't it? I think it's the likes of the Anglo Irish bankers that people should be directing anger at. There's filthy rich people robbing our tax money, most single mothers genuinely need it. I know one single mother who got offered a job last week but had to turn it down because she would lose her rent allowance. Basically its financially impossible for her to get a job unless she is offered over 28K a year. She's itching to get out of her situation and start supporting herself and her family but she's stuck in a catch 22 situation. It's a seriously depressing rut to be stuck in if you genuinely want to be independant.

You know what I find more appalling than all of this?

The lack of basic math skills being shown in this thread.

In the UK if the father doesn't support the child, the Child Support Agency direct his employer to deduct the money from his wages.

Proper order too, if you get someone up the duff, accept the responsibilites that come with children

Any way every child should have the chance to succed in life without being held back by poverty.

On the other hand it simply isn't fair that people who pay taxes and work hard are losing their homes while others are given a free house no questions asked.

Don't some single mothers have a fella living with them? Is he entitiled to live in a free house as well?

    1 plus 1 is 2, 2 plus 2 is 4, 4 plus 4 is....7.2m

Yes and Yes, if the Council/SW are informed. No, if they aren't aware.

The reason it's €720 Million is due to the high cost of rents and no Govt. limits on them.

I think it these times it is prudent that the Government re-examine many of the social welfare benefits available today. Don't get me wrong, many are well entitled to get money off the state and am delighted that we live in welfare country yet I cannot help thinking that many schemes they have in place are far too generous.

I know a single mum of one child with a 3 bed house to herself!!! You can hear day in and day out of people struggling to find adequate social housing and there are 2 beds free in that house..
There is a lot of local women who get the unmarried mothers allowance yet openly admit they are living with the fathers of their children. When asked will they be getting married tell you the benefits would be far less as a married woman..
If they tightened up on welfare fraud, i.e people doing nixers etc for cash and claiming dole I reckon we would save a fortune as well.

On the other hand plenty of people who have lost their jobs are struggling to make ends meet and get what they are entitled to off the state.
In the hard times it is necessary that the Government make the wisest and fairest decisions.

Just force the daddies to support their offspring, problem solved.

Yeah, that's always a mystery to me.

Years ago (and I'm going backto the 40's & 50's) a lot of men buggered off to England, having gotten a girl pregnant back in Ireland. On request from the girls family, and our Government, the British Authorities were able to track down these men in most cases, particularlly if they'd joined the Armed Forces, and deduct a % from their wages, which was sent to the girls family to support the child.

I'm not making this up, it happened to my uncle.

There's another issue about some girls not wanting the fathers name on the birth cert though, or so i understand. Otherwise I can't see why this cannot be done.
