Unless you get Ripwave from IBB or Clearwire... They just set up on a desk and talk to an antena somwhere in the city..
Speed tends to be crap tho, I'd say contention in the city would be pretty high too.. so probably not really worth the money...

You could also go for one of the 3g broadbands either...

Not really worth the money for any of them just for torrents tho.. Youll have an internet connection in the room from the college for everything else..

I torrent with my 3G modem just fine. I've gotten up to 300KBps with it.

do you only use it for torrenting or do you use it when you go home too??
Presumably you have a connection in Halls FOC from Trinity..

I use it on the train home, in the city, and when I want to use my laptop in the kitchen of my apartment at Halls, since there's no wifi.

yeah..... I dont like the idea of 300Kb, its too slow TBH hahahaha. if I can use FTP/HTTPS Ill be fine I think, assuming Its fast of course.

    300KBps != 300Kbps.

It's very hard to get phone reception in Halls so I doubt you could get Clearwire there either.

    Different technologies.

How much is one of those wireless thing-a-majigs anyway? My rapidshare account was around €55 for a year, and can get speeds of 1000kbps + when wired up in halls.

Obviously differrent technologies but surely walls that can block a phone signal can block a broadband signal?

As I said, different technologies. Increasing frequencies have decreasing penetration.

That said, it could just be the case that the IBB mast might be around the corner and the phone mast is miles away..

A place like Rathmines being too far from anywhere to get decent phone service, I doubt that.

Its more complicated then just that. The absorption mechanism is different for different frequencies. Water is an issue with the frequencies used for ripwave, its not meant for damp climates like Ireland.

Phone coverage is usually **** in Halls. Energy efficient Pilkington K-glass windows and reflective foil insulation etc. That is all.

Indeed, coupled with a couple of hundred (maybe 1000+?) phones all using the same antenna: whatever about noise, I'd say the residents really hate Trinity students.

no download limit AFAIK. Download away to your hearts content.
If you plug in by ethernet cable somewhere (Usher) you'll get much faster speeds.. Close to 80Mbps

Where are they? I go to the Usher Library all the time but I've brought in my own connection (3G). Are there connectors there? Like on the study desks? Or in the 24 hour study room?

Phone reception is perfect a few feet outside Halls, the students are not ruining it for the residents in that regard. If an antenna can't handle a couple of hundred phones then it's not going to be much use in Dublin city anyway.
