I have never tried but as far as I know, no. http://isservices.tcd.ie/isswebdev/newsite/internet/external.php

I wouldn't chance it. You have to register on the network to be able to access it so they pretty much know what everyone is doing all the time. Also, I tried to use the network to download service pack one once and my laptop went funny for weeks on end :(

I'm pretty sure it's not. I've a friend who is studying there and pretty tech savvy. He's on cammpus and, although tunnelling, he hasn't succesfully got torrents to work. You can get Kazaa going though.

got to http://jimmy.voltage.be/ and then go into playback/download (if u dont see this forum you may have to register) and there is a topic pinned about bittorrent through firewalls this should help

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

Bittorrent uses a range of ports that are all firewalled off by IIS/CS/Maths.
You could use httptunnel style proxy and sockscap to get around it, but speeds are ~1/2k/s with any form of a free version. Also if u ever do get around it, keep in mind heanet give us lovely graphs that show which machines are uploading/downloading alot.IIS will have the same for their proxy, though if u keep it moderate shouldn't be noticed.....

here in UL the RIAA got all uppidy about the level of filesharing so now everything has to go through the proxy, makes downloading impossible for all the regular computers, but using a bit of their own software on their own support site a guy I know was able to bypass it and his P2P works now, torrents too!

Without going into the exact details: use "ssh -L"

bind the correct ports and away you go.

Send all your torrents through port 22.

It's not rocket science and has been done for years...

ISS can do SFA about it.

Is there a limit on what a student can download from legitimate sites? e.g. America's Army might be a few gigabytes of info - all free and legal.

no download limit AFAIK. Download away to your hearts content.
If you plug in by ethernet cable somewhere (Usher) you'll get much faster speeds.. Close to 80Mbps

Hella no - anything that involves connection to other computers AFAIK, including BitTorrent, P2P, online gaming etc. is a no no.

    No, definitely not.

I have a rapidshare account and download warez, must have downloaded about 200gbs since october and haven't had anyone coming over and giving out about it. They can apparently watch you downloading stuff, but with a few thousand people downloading everyday I really can't see how.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,163 ✭✭✭✭Boston

Of course they can watch you download stuff. They don't, but they can if someone reported you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,889 ✭✭✭evercloserunion

I will personally report every single one of you, because I am the Grinch.

    Hils,

Bittorrent is a protocol for distributing files.

It gets a bad name because it is generally used for the distribution of copyrighted material.

But the protocol itself is all legal. :)

    Slim to none.

Unless you get Ripwave from IBB or Clearwire... They just set up on a desk and talk to an antena somwhere in the city..
Speed tends to be crap tho, I'd say contention in the city would be pretty high too.. so probably not really worth the money...

You could also go for one of the 3g broadbands either...

Not really worth the money for any of them just for torrents tho.. Youll have an internet connection in the room from the college for everything else..

    :(

Oh well. Suppose Ill jsut spend the money on a speedbox instead then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,699 ✭✭✭Brian

I torrent with my 3G modem just fine. I've gotten up to 300KBps with it.

do you only use it for torrenting or do you use it when you go home too??
Presumably you have a connection in Halls FOC from Trinity..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,699 ✭✭✭Brian

I use it on the train home, in the city, and when I want to use my laptop in the kitchen of my apartment at Halls, since there's no wifi.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 56 ✭✭MrDrifter

yeah..... I dont like the idea of 300Kb, its too slow TBH hahahaha. if I can use FTP/HTTPS Ill be fine I think, assuming Its fast of course.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,699 ✭✭✭Brian

    300KBps != 300Kbps.

It's very hard to get phone reception in Halls so I doubt you could get Clearwire there either.

    Different technologies.

How much is one of those wireless thing-a-majigs anyway? My rapidshare account was around €55 for a year, and can get speeds of 1000kbps + when wired up in halls.

Obviously differrent technologies but surely walls that can block a phone signal can block a broadband signal?

As I said, different technologies. Increasing frequencies have decreasing penetration.

That said, it could just be the case that the IBB mast might be around the corner and the phone mast is miles away..

A place like Rathmines being too far from anywhere to get decent phone service, I doubt that.
