These are available now in Argos. I have just bought one for £300 delivered to a friends house in Newry and will collect next week.

    From Join Freesat blog

    Shortage Of Freesat Everywhere

Freesat must be absolutely furious at the moment, having announced a fantastic 200,000 sales in 8 months since May 2008, it appears that the majority of retailers have no stock of the biggest selling products.

Alba Group have not distributed any Grundig or Goodmans SD/HD boxes since October/November 2008, and with Argos now owning the Bush brand, these are unlikely to be seen for sale anywhere but Argos. We are waiting for confirmation from Alba Group, but it’s been hinted that a 2nd generation box is in development which might mean no supply until February or maybe even March!

There’s no such issue with Humax’s HD Freesat box (FOXSAT-HD), they are still available everywhere, but the PVR version (FOXSAT-HDR) remains in very short supply, with no distribution since before Christmas! Humax have indicated that the PVR’s will be available from the major retailers and independents this week, but not in large volumes, with increased quantities expected from February. We of course will let you know when/where stock becomes available, alternatively visit Maplin who are taking pre-orders with an estimated delivery date of 14 days.

Panasonic’ supply of Freesat IDTV’s seems fine, no major issues on any of their screen sizes. John Lewis have said to a number of potential customers that the 42in Freesat Plasma (TH-42PZ81) has been discontinued. Panasonic have confirmed to us that this is certainly not the case and both the LCD and Plasma’s have all been selling very well.

Hopefully all these shortages are just a blip, a result of Christmas shutdowns etc; using the excuse of the present economic climate shouldn’t be much of a factor given that the large majority of the distributors have firm orders placed, they just can’t get the supply.

Just saw, Play.com has the Humax PVR-9150T 160GB Twin Tuner TV Recorder for £134, but no price in Euros since they don't ship electronics to the Republic, but I can order and have shipped to a friend in the North. I assume this isn't the HD model, but it seems to be good value with the current exchange rate, any advice?

I think thats an SD terrestrial (freeview) tuner (with mpeg2 codec only). If so, it useless in ireland

    Hi Kuro Man,

Your right! The page I initially saw it on, it was right next to the Humax FOXSAT HD Ready Set-Top Box (with no PVR), so I assumed it was also a freesat box, but upon closer examination, I realise it isn't. Sorry if I caused any confusion.

Well I got my new box from Argos (delivered to the North) and set it up yesterday. Initially I was disappointed as it didn’t seem to be much of an improvement on the SkyBox that I had for the last 9 years (I had recently cancelled my Sky sub and was accessing through ‘other channels’). But wow it’s a big improvement. First off, the picture quality on the SD channels is crystal almost HD like must be something to do with the connection and BBC HD is very good. The PVR is so easy to use with 80 hours of HD recording and 200 hours of SD as well. The only downside is that I have only a single LNB and haven’t got round to installing the 2nd cable yet and this affects what channels you can watch when recording. Well worth the money though.

I ordered one over a week ago on maplin.co.uk; have received email and postal invoice both of which have indicated that it's out of stock and will be delivered as soon as it's back in - I emailed maplin customer service to ask if they could say when but haven't heard from them yet!

I did the same, but it was in stock when purchased - was lucky at the time, (subscribe to http://www.humaxfoxsat.co.uk/ which checks stock accross suppliers) I rang customer service who told me that there was hundreds of customers ahead of me, checked online, saw that it was dispatched and delivered within 3 working days... Moral of the story if system says its in stock then grab it, you skip ahead of others who pre-order box.
    Not fair but what happens...

You can record HD and SD content to the internal HDD - unsure about external USB drives/sticks, haven't done any testing with those yet with HD content.

FWIW, I rang Humax a few weeks ago to ask if I would be able to view files transferred from the Foxsat HDR's HDD to a USB memory stick, on a Faxsat HD. I was told that this would be possible when Humax activate the USB port on the Foxsat HD.

As the UK freeeview is upgrading to mpeg4 is it likely that the Freesat Humax HDR will upgrade to include this later this year or that such settop boxes will arive on the scene from other manufacturers.

I know one response said this was not for real, but just to be clear - are we saying that it is or isn't likely that Humax will upgrade the Foxsat HDR to include a dual-MPEG4 tuner to allow PVR functionality with Irish DTT, in addition to its Freesat PVR functionality? This would be the shiz-nitz, wouldn't it?

I've posted elsewhere this response I got from Humax back in August 08, when I asked about them making an MPEG4 PVR that would suit Irish DTT, but it may be relevant to post it here again:

"We don’t have the product which can support MPEG 4 DTT and PVR functionality, but we are considering to develop this kind of product.
But, this is very initial stage, so I have only very restricted information about this.
I am sorry that I cannot give you more information.
    "
