Have you ever seen a black, Asian or East European buy food in a chipper?

It just struck me today but.....I havent. Ever. Any reason why immigrants eat in McDonalds, BK, KFC etc etc as much as the Irish, but seemingly never a chipper?

If this is a half serious thread, one reason is on religious grounds.

Certain foods contain contents that go against their faith.
Contains meat, alcohol, etc in the ingredients. This is not to explain all but I know a few that stay away for these reasons alone.
(McDonald's, if I remember right, in India had to change their cooking oil in their fryers because of this alone last year)

If I was in a strange country I would be more likely eat in a fast food place than a chipper....or maybe the fast food employee's make them feel a little less homesick.

There's one chipper on Clanbrassil St. with the slogan "Fresh N Halal" on their sign.

As a catchline, I don't think it's in danger of putting "I'm Lovin' It" into the Ha'penny place.

I work with some eastern europeans and Asians. I very very rarely see them eat fast food. I asked and they just say that food is disgusting, they alway bring in there own lunch.

I used to work in a coleslaw factory and one of the blacks there would eat a big mash of coleslaw potato salad and tuna salad, The china lad would bring in all this weird fish **** wrapped in rice and microwave it - the steam would be everywhere and stank rotten.
Luckily though the owner was a fierce republican so he would separate the immigrant workers lunchtime from the Irish ones.

I do, and the lads in our chipper know my order before I even open my mouth! But I am also looking after my figure so it's only once a week and no other big meals on this day.

Because the food in the average Irish/English chipper, is , by international standards, absolutely filthy grease-soaked muck that you wouldn't feed to a dog that you really, really didnt like.

Now granted, McDonalds is crap too, but its nowhere near as bad as the food we like to consider our national cuisine.

Irish food is generally best consumed after large amounts of alcohol, and forgotten about the next day.

I see immigants in the chipper all the time, unfortunately it's always the same 3 guys begging for change...

I wouldn't eat in a chipper if I was in another country, like Scotland (I ordered this cheeseburger, but instead they put a frozen slab of meat in a deep fat fryer and served it to me in a tissue.)

Our national cuisine is bacon and Cabbage!!!!

There is NOTHING Better than a big HUGE thick cut of bacon on your plate smothered in Cabbage and Potatoes!!!!

Yep. Generally continental people eat well and put a bit more thought into it. We just aren't used to the concept. Though I suppose now and again some Polish fella gets a few too many in him, staggers in and goes 'give us a batter-burger....'

That'd be my guess. The few I know who eat chipper food are few and far between. I love a good quarter pounder with cheese so the missus is well used to me eating chipper food but I can never tempt her with a burger or a battered sausage etc simply because it just isn't her thing.

But the original point is, why not the local chipper, yet there are loads of EE eating in my local McDonalds, and Chinese and black people seem to eat KFC by the (litreally) bucketload.

Whats so suspicious looking about the local chippers?

Indeed, I've seen many selling fried Mars bars. Now possibly these are on sale in Ireland but I've not seen them.

It could be portion size. Honestly your average 1/4 Pounder with chips from a local chipper could easily feed two, if you eat all of it you're either bloated or have to throw something away. I don't take standard size meals anymore cause I would die, switched to a small salad burger or a kid's meal but not all chippers offer kid's meals. I guess that fast food chains offer more realistic size meals?

Doesn't that mean you're getting more for your money in the chipper? I generally find them cheaper

True but what's the point in getting more food if it's too much anyway? Kind of Supersize Me effect! I find portions in chippers huge...
And I think that the chains are actually cheaper with the offers they now seem to have - work near Grafton St!
