    hi there,

i wanted to go to sprucefield gonker but there you go! next time! no that wasn't us "discussing" body wash dublinwriter. wasn't in dunnes at all. just argos, semi chem and sainsbury's ... only so much you can do when you have two little ones!

even though we didn't get the wipes were happy with shopping as definitely saved a lot on what we bought and DH saw a bottle of port (10yr old tawny from warres) which he saw for around €20 ish down south and £10.99 there so got that, have yet to sample!

As per previous post I was in Enniskillen Sat 10.01.09, had to wait until doing the shopping yesterday to finalise some prices to work out savings.........spent €393 and took €723 out of the economy, a slightly different way of saying I saved €330 on a €393 spend, note, I was VERY selective with my purchases, no impulse buys, just where I knew I was making good savings e.g. CiF anit-bacterial sprap thingys, tesco = €3.19, ASDA = £1, Bisto, tesco = €3.89, ASDA= £1.48, baby wipes (own brand), 5 packs in Tesco = €9.95, 5 packs in ASDA £4, Gillette sensor excel blades, Tesco = €9'ish for 5, ASDA = £7.61 for 10, and so on and so on.
Get with it people, no brainer and a day out to boot......

    Hi lads,

Need to change a fair amount of euros into sterling. Anyone have any advice on the best rates - try a few banks or one of the bureau de change near the border. Cheers.

    Plastic/ATM/Laser FTW

I was pissed off with not bein able to get a good bricks/mortar rate twice in December when I went up. XE spot rate was .97p and I could only get .90p anywhere I tried. ATM withdrawal was .94p or so.

Suppose plastic is probably the easiest but unfortunately i can only withdraw 300 sterling at a time per day - i need £2000 so it'll be a 7 day job with a charge for every withdrawal:(

Is there any signs that the euro V sterling will go up to near what it was at christmas? Sainsburys was giving a rate of 84p V € this weekend

84p is very poor considering the spot rate is 90p.

Try Haldane Fisher, they're in Newry, they're a merchant but sell to the public.

I don't understand why people bring Euros with them to the North. I always get sterling from the hole in the wall gang. They're always reasonable and offer a decent exchange rate. All this currency swapping would drive me mental. It only seems right and proper to use the national currency of the country I'm in.

Anyway, I was in Enniskillen again yesterday for my bi-weekly shop. I can't get over the prices.

Standard boxes of cereals in asda for a quid! In the south 3 to 4 euros depending on the shop.
Pack of very nice 4 large bagels - 60p
    Baby Wipes - 98p
    Guinness fridge pack - £9.98
    King Size 13.5 tog duvet - £9.57

I'm not going to list out my receipt, but until the shops down here match or beat those prices I will do ALL my shopping in the north.

    Riv

I agree 100% with you. The only ones winning with the Euro are the shop owners. They are delighted to take the visitors for a ride with their poor exchange rates.

Don't be a Euro muppet and use sterling or cards.

Try Haldane Fisher in Newry, at the roundabout at the bottom of the hill on the Newry bypass (McDonalds,B&Q on right) take the left heading for Portadown/Craigdown and its up there on the right hand side (pass by the houses and you will see the sign)
    Check http://www.haldane-fisher.com

I think there is a bathroom showrooms on the Kilkeel road out of Newry in a little industrial park.

    Hi All,

I went to ASDA in Westwood shopping centre on Saturday and found it brilliant value. Stopping sprucefield on the way back for Sainsburys (was much more impressed with ASDA). DOes anyone know if there is an ASDA closer to Dublin than the one in Westwood Shopping Centre? Is the one in Westwood 24hr?

    Hi,
Just wondering where is Asda Westwood and the best way to get there. Was in UK at the weekend and could not get over the prices in Asda. Have been using Sainsbury in Newry but Asda seems much better.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 55 ✭✭Bam33

    HI Lyn136,

Asda in westwood is easy enough to get to. I went on the AA roadwatch website and got the route from there. If you follow those you cannot miss it. I went for the first time this weekend and I have to say it was brilliant value. I went ot ASDA and to Sainsburys. I found ASDA much better value and easier to get around. The staff were all very helpful too. It is well worth a visit. I have not had time to add up the savings yet but I know they were big even when I factor in the fuel and toll bridge costs. I will certainly be going every month/6 weeks to do a big shop and then using Aldi down here for my fruit/veg/bread/milk etc. ASDA cannot be beaten in the north IMO and Aldi cannot be beaten in the south again IMO

Just thought I'd throw this one up for those looking white goods - Dalzells, based in Markethill (14miles out of Newry towards Armagh) are a local private retailer and they're offering free delivery to RoI as far as I'm aware.

No point looking for a website, but I've directed a few friends there and they report back that they're beating Currys (UK) prices, they're also easy to deal with (knocking a few quid off etc). Maybe worth a call and a lot closer than Belfast, free delivery is a boon too.

Do you know if there are problems with warranty when buying white goods from N.I.?
