That was for the non-PVR version I presume.

Are you sure about Composite Vs RGB? I thought the restriction on non " HDCP enabled HDMI" was to do Standard Definition on Freesat. Why should it be degraded to LOWER quality than the same channel in SD?
Yes - there are a lot of complaints (rightly so!) on the UK Freesat forums about the degradation of the SCART RGB signal back to composite when BBC HD is viewed. It's a bananas interpretation of the "no component signal" rule/guideline when copyrighted programmes are being shown on HD (HDMI). Apparently Humax are treating RGB SCART as being equivalent to component, so they disable RGB via SCART when you are viewing BBC HD and they encrypt the stream stored on disk, so there is no benefit in offloading it to another platform for viewing.
This situation may change slightly when BBC start selectively implementing the copy protection flag - some programmes will be watchable via RGB SCART and others only in composite.
I believe that when you switch the Foxsat HDR to "non-Freesat" mode, this butchering of the SCART output does not occur:eek: Crazy or what? I haven't tried this yet as I have no need to look at the remaining crappy channels on Astra. I've got enough other sat boxes for that! Plus, when you do a full scan on the Foxsat of the non-Freesat channels, you lose the planner schedule and you have to set it up again. Wifey wouldn't like missing Home & Away and Neighbours, Corrie etc! I must say, though that the planner is excellent so far - haven't missed a single programme set for recording in the past two weeks.

A misinterpretation. The rules say no HD on component, you can output true SD (downsampled) on Component according to rules. While component HAS been (due to USA/Japan pre-HDMI HD) used for HD, No TV has ever used RGB SCART for HD, though possible. Component is infact identical quality to RGB at SD. Composite is a serious degradation.

maybe they can fix it via FW update since the box does do RGB. OTH if they have a cazy downconversion method HW?

The box already supplies the BBC HD signal (downsampled) on SCART RGB, but only if you use the non-Freesat mode of the box. It's purely a firmware setting in Freesat mode which degrades to composite. Loads of complaints about it on the UK boards as I said. I'm sure something sensible wil happen soon:rolleyes:

if i could divert slightly from the topic, can anyone recommend a good 32" hdtv for the second room/freesat?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,159 ✭✭✭JDxtra

Panasonic make a 32" TV with Freesat built in. Apart from that you would be better off using another thread for your question.

Yeah, I was going to recommend the Panasonic too...

Do you really need Sky+ and Freesat+? Would a standard Freesat box or the aforementioned TV not do the job for the second room?

And as you already have Sky+, you should have two spare connectors on your dish to hook your new receiver up to (whatever it turns out to be :))

    Lads, quick question:

Does this box cater for the upcoming DTT? i.e can I plug my aerial as well as dish into this?

Also, does the non PVR version allow you to record to external USB HD? If so, what advantage doe sthe PVR version have over the non-pvr + external USB drive?

    Thanks,

    Stooge

No, just an LNB with enough outputs and another two cables running from the LNB to the new box.

Just tried there and yes they do!

I wonder where the price hike came from! They are priced at £294~ in Argos in the UK

Yes, I believe maplins.co.uk will deliver to Ireland.

There's a steady stream popping up on ebay.co.uk. Seem to be getting bid up to about £320. There's been a couple of 'Buy it Now' ones priced at that. Most showing as only delivering to the UK, but often they'll ship further if you ask.

They do. Also they will order in to an Irish Maplin shop and then you pay Irish catalogue price and no postage.

UK price + postage would possibly work out cheaper than Irish catalogue price alone!

As the UK freeeview is upgrading to mpeg4 is it likely that the Freesat Humax HDR will upgrade to include this later this year or that such settop boxes will arive on the scene from other manufacturers.

This has nothing to do with Freeview. The box already does MPEG4, but doesn't do DVB-T.

Freesat is intended as a complete alternative to DTT (Freeview). It's only in furren lands, like Ireland, that it's an add-on.
