Haven't won one yet Ollie, but only started playing them last season really. Had a few prizes from them but seem to have a bother following up a good first round with a solid second.

That's some going by the 70 year old.

I played in a scratch cup recently with a special guest (invited to play by the club for some reason!)...anyway this guy was in his early 70's (age) and was still playing off 4...he was telling me that he had won his clubs captain's prize in the 50's, 60,s, 70's, 80's, 90's and 00's How about that!

Yer man from Newlands? Yeah he was in the paper for that.

There's a similar guy in Milltown who's fairly long in the tooth and also had a very bad accedient as a younger man. Think he went from 4 to the mid teens after the accident and in his later years said f*ck it and got back down to 4!

    Thanks for that f22.

Lots more to be added I'm sure. I'd be pretty certain of Woodbrook, South County, Skerries and Naas and probably more. Good to see so many clubs organised enough to confirm dates so early.

Yep, Headfort is usually August, Forrest Little early September. Baltray is August too but impossible to get a slot.

Yeah I'd go to those three as well, unless I'm 4. Seems to be a good selection of 4+ ones though this year.

Headfort was the last saturday in May last year I think. I'd say alot of clubs will look to hold one this year as it's a sure fire way of a full time sheet.

Seafield is another hard one to get into... would love a crack at it and Baltray though.

I wish the GUI listing would say whether they are 36 holes or 18 though.

    Indeed... Seapoint.:o

Yes, Headfort was held on the June Bank Holiday last year. Scorcher of a day it was. Think I'll target Woodenbridge this year as if memory serves you had glowing reports of that one Shriek? Last played the course 15 years ago.

Well it's been my favorite course in ireland since I was about 17. No it's not Druid's Glen or the K Club and yes I've played them along with Adare Manor, MJ & co - I'm not saying it's the best, but Woodenbridge is my favorite yeah.

It's a basic country golf club set-up. Nothing flashy, basic bar and club house but nice. But when you cross the old railway bridge to get to the club house, there's something about the place that's very cool and unique. It's in the flat bottom of a densley wooded little valley with part of the course in between the a big V at the meeting of two big rivers.

Nothing amazing about the course design, decent parkland set-up along the lines of St Margrets, Courtown or Woodbrook. Greens are always very good and there's a nice mix of short and long par 3s, par fours that are just an iron and a wedge as well as tough ones that are both tight and long.

I've played it maybe 5 times, one or two mediocre or bad rounds and one or two good scores, but regardless of the numer, I've only ever left the place having really enjoyed it.

Hard to explain but yeah, there's something about it.

    Hey all,

I'm new to Ireland and played off 7 in Australia. I'm looking forward to playing some of the scratch cups this year, it sounds like there is a good amount to choose from.

I have a few questions and would appreciate if someone could answer them.
Which are the best ones and are there are some that are difficult to get into?
How do you enter them, do you go through the GUI or through the clubs?
How soon before the scratch cup do the entries usually open?

    Thanks in advance.

Welcome! The JSCs are indeed great fun. Generally the timesheets will open around 2 weeks before, but sometimes this varies. Keep an eye on this thread as usually someone will mention when it's open. You typically just put your name down by calling the club direct. The GUI just lists the events.

Some harder than others to get into. Some fill up very quickly. Some are 36 holes, while some are just 18.

My favourite ones are Headfort, Clontarf (Lord Mayors), Skerries, Forrest Little. But as Sheet's post above about Woodbrook proves, everyone has their favs. Good luck and maybe bump into you at one of them during the year.

If you haven't joined a club in Ireland you may want to check what the situation with your handicap is, assuming it's held in a club in Australia. The GUI may be best to advise you. www.gui.ie

Most clubs have them, some over 18 holes but most over 36 holes. Lots of choice but here's a few for the shortlist, Headfort, Laytown & Bettystown, Baltray (impossible to get on the sheet), Portmarnock Links< Mullingar and Carlow.

How do you enter them, do you go through the GUI or through the clubs?
    Just phone the club directly

How soon before the scratch cup do the entries usually open?
Sheet generally comes out 2 weeks prior to the event

Sure you are. Ever notice that your playing partners never bend down to pick their ball up in front of you?:D:D

Thanks guys for your answers. I will look forward to bumping into you through the year, I'll be the one with the Aussie accent!

I have joined Corballis Links and once I put in three cards I'll have a GUI handicap, so hopefully I'll still be off single figures once I do this.

It's a bit of a bugger that I can't carry my handicap over but rules are rules I guess.

Another question for you all, are there as many events for females and do you know if there a similar thread on here about the female events?
My wife also plays and is keen to play in as many events as possible.

    Cheers again.

Anyone won any of their respective scratch cups? Just wondered.
Great craic competiting regardless of the level. He also won a senior scratch in all decades except the 00's...but he did manage a junior scratch! Impressive eh. After spending most of the round chatting with him I only realised on the 18th tee that he was bettering my score (i'm in my 20's, just!) by one...bloody 70+ year old...couldn't get the shot back either.
have old boy in my club 80 this year ,off 8 at the time, was complaining last winter (i think) of getting cut on general play then went out and came 3rd in winter alliance against those young o-5 handicaps

    Best ones i played was
    Headfort.... New/Old
Co Louth.... 36 holes for 30 quid great value.
    Carton House.... 36 holes O'meara /Monty

When you book tell them you play off 5. Always gets you on the sheet.;)

Don't remember Carton House being on the GUI list last year... when was it?

Most of them are just a normal timesheet- first come, first serve. I play off 5 but I don't think it opens any doors for me.

Getting to 4 will certainly shut a few though ;)

Carton was semi-open... it could be full open this time round with the year that's in it ;)

Didn't there used to be a Junior Scratch on the Portmarnock Links in March... possibly on Paddy's day every year?

I'm not sure if it's still going and don't see it on the calender list but does anyone know?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 281 ✭✭dnjoyce

that was a senior scratch, was 36 holes on easter monday up until last year when it was only 18 'cos the clocks hadn't gone forward yet so couldn't fit in the 36 - they were still charging 60 bucks for it though, so not sure many played in it in the end! Once they get their standard scratch measured I'd imagine it will be popular if put on the calendar again at 36 holes.

Yep, JSC on March 17th in Portmarnock Links. e60 per peron. 18 holes.

I think the Senior Scratch Cup is on April 4th over 36 holes.
